How the hell is it suspicious to not carry ID? It isnt against the law, you just need to provide it to your nearest police station within a week of being formally requested by the police
What you’re describing is a producer which is something a lot of forces haven’t done in a long time, partially because police have in-car computers and handheld computers which can easily access DVLA and MIB databases as well as their own PNC system. Not to mention, what the police will classify as ID is loose and often amounts to something with your name and picture on it. As long as they’re reasonably satisfied that you are the person you claim to be, they’ll be happy. And honestly, most people I know who are drivers have their driving licence, which is conveniently the correct size to be kept in a purse or wallet, on their person assuming they’ve taken said purse or wallet with them. Section 23/24 of PACE and also specific legislation like the Road Traffic Act also mean that the police are free if needed to stop people, request ID as and when needed and to arrest those whose ID is doubtful. The RTA allows the police to stop any vehicle on the public road system and request proof of the pre-requisite documentation needed to drive legally, usually their licence and insurance (and less frequently MOT).
@eliz_scubavn I personally don't carry anything on me when I drive, my phone can't act as my card so why would I need a wallet on me? Police can get bent if they want to arrest someone over that
I often go on shorter drives without my purse containing my licence but then I shouldn’t get pulled over as me and the car are fully legal. I know people with no licence and passport so no ID but again they don’t drive so shouldn’t be needing the proof.
