    We recently used a kombucha bottle to hold maple syrup and when it was empty, I added kombucha brew, lemon juice and a sprinkle of ginger and it was fantastic!

    Love the energy you bring to the lecture/video. Keeps people's attention.
    A Scoby is not required to produce Kombucha, but rather that cup of old fermented kombucha that you pour into the new batch will generate a new Scoby. The scoby is a by-probiotic-product .

    I like and have adopted your technique of keeping the scoby in its jar and not combining them. To keep them segregrated; prevents cross contamination.

      If I understand correctly, yes, you can keep reusing the mother SCOBY and she will continue to grow (with babies of course). When she gets really big, (around an inch or so I'd say) remove one of her baby SCOBY's from the top and start again. Hope that makes sence!

    Do you ever have problems with your brew tasting too yeasty? I’ve been making kombucha for years and find lately I am not enjoying the taste due to the flavour change. I strain the batch to get rid of the yeast and discard the last inch. Yours looked delicious.

    • @fourseasonsnorth
      @fourseasonsnorth  2 года назад +3

      Straining should help, but you could also try just using the very top for your starter liquid instead of stirring it up beforehand.

    I am attempting to make a scoby without any komboucha whatsoever. Just tea and sugar. Is this method acceptable to do? The first culture got moldy so I started another one today

    • @fourseasonsnorth
      @fourseasonsnorth  Год назад

      Trying to make a SCOBY without some sort of culture most likely will not work.
      If you want to make your own SCOBY, you could put some apple cider vinegar with your tea/sugar mix. I did that once and it made a SCOBY. Or, you could buy an unflavoured kombucha drink from the health food store, give it a shake and put some of it in with your sugar/tea mixture.
      Good luck!

    • @fourseasonsnorth
      @fourseasonsnorth  4 года назад +2

      Yes, that's right! It does seem complicated at the beginning, but when you understand how it works it's really quite simple: Every week or two brew tea, add some sugar, add the culture, let sit for a week or two and then repeat. It's very fun and rewarding. You really should try it!

    I didn’t quite get what exactly is Scoby?

    • @fourseasonsnorth
      @fourseasonsnorth  3 года назад +1

      SCOBY = a Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast. Basically a culture.

    • @stephenshort8113
      @stephenshort8113 Месяц назад

      The true scoby is the mix of yeast and bacteria in the liquid ... the other so called scoby is a solid pellicle created by the bacteria and it's a form of cellulose, this isn't necessary to use in the kombucha brewing
