Rhonda is indeed the Queen of Bluegrass. I’m fortunate that I got to play with her when we were both a lot younger. It was 1981, and I was playing lead guitar in a band called Jerry Graham and Cowboy Country, from Sedalia, MO. Jerry knew the Vincents, and he asked Rhonda and her dad, Johnny, (RIP, Johnny!) to join our band. Rhonda played mandolin and fiddle, sang mostly backup vocals, and Johnny played 5-string banjo. Rhonda was dynamite even then-I think she was something like 17, and I remember thinking, “This girl is going places!” Rhonda and Johnny left us after about a month, to play acoustic, and I left the band later that year and made my way back to California. I lost track of Rhonda for a few years, and one night I was playing a gig at a club in Modesto, and as we were packing up our gear, the club’s DJ put on a record that made me take notice. I couldn’t recognize the voice, although it sounded familiar, and I asked the DJ who it was. He said, “That’s a new artist named Rhonda Vincent!” You could have knocked me over with a feather. I came out of that DJ booth practically jumping up and down, and shouting, “I used to play with that girl! I knew she was going to make it one day!” The rest of the band was looking at me like I’d lost my mind. I went right out the next day and got the album. I’m glad to see that she’s doing so well! You go, girl!!
She's also amazingly gracious, she'll often turn to other members while they are "soloing", and give them her complete attention and smiles, just don't see that so much anywhere else.
Saw Rhonda last year with my brother-in-law musician Gary Jay Hoffman. My father is from the Clinch Mountains. We were like 2 little boys in a candy store.
Princess? When Rhonda left her family band they hired a young girl from Illinois to take her place. That was Alison Krauss. Rhonda’s been at it for a while longer then Alison and stuck to more traditional country and bluegrass then Alison has( at least in the last 15 years). LOVE Alison, but I think she would also agree that RV deserves the title. 😊

From a fellow.Missourian, good for you Rhonda. You've worked hard & earned it.

If she is queen of Bluegrass, What does that make Alison Krauss? Goddess.
