What a nice, well preserved truck. This one strikes a chord with me. My dad bought a 1973 GMC 3/4 ton pickup that was the exact same color, except it had a vinyl seat. It had a 454. I think he bought it in late 1979 or so. I was really young. I remember he didn't have it for very long. He put it on a dyno at the dealer and they said it was losing 50 horsepower somewhere. Dad did some work on the valves with no improvement. He traded it in. I do have fond memories of that truck. So nice to see one in such great shape! BTW that's the first time I've seen the spare mounted on the rear bumper. I'm sure most of us over 40 recall all the pickup trucks that used to have the spare hanging off the front grille - a serious wind drag!
This is how you had to equip and modify a truck of this era to tow heavy loads reliably before the advent of $50,000, 490hp 3/4-ton trucks you can buy off the showroom floor. The trans is a TH400 with a huge cooler and that air-cooled trans pan. It's probably been rebuilt once or twice already. The overdrive unit is there because back in those days even the 454 was only about 210hp, so in order to get a heavy trailer moving they put 4:10 gears in the rear. That made highway driving miserable because the engine was spinning about 3,000 rpm at 60 mph. It wouldn't HURT it but it was loud and probably got about 8 mpg. That's why the auxiliary tank and that hugely complicated switching system are there, so they didn't have to stop every 100 miles and fill the tank. I noticed there's a belt guard above the AC compressor. The cruise control is aftermarket. The engine has newer valve covers and isn't orange so I figure it's been rebuilt at least once as well. That's a super nice truck, but modern girly-men would last about 2 days driving that rig around as stiff as those ride before they would run screaming back to their comfy luxo-trucks.
@@dwitcraft why should he keep it with no 5th wheel trailer? He already has a spare with the same engine, and really shouldn't pull parts off working trucks anyway. Find one you can't fix for spares.
Totally agree!! These trucks were built very mechanic friendly. But you had to be a Mechanic, not a parts changer. I owned a '73 Cheyenne. My first vehicle. Passed anything but a gas station.
Me too. No computer crap in the way, a hell of a lot of room under the hood, a piece of cake to work on. A person can climb in in the engine bay if need to.
I had a 1976 Chevy 4 door Silverado pickup with a 454 about 30. Years ago I had the truck from 1990 till 2006. It rusted out. That 454 was a runner in its day. I could work on this truck myself .It was the same color and same seat colors as the 1973 Chevy 4 door pickup that youre going through good luck sir. I hope it starts. Sincerely Richard Dodds. So Sioux city Nebraska.
Dad had a '74 GMC 3+3 454 Camper Special too pull our 5th wheel camper growing up. Gold with wood grain in the middle, that thing was a beast!! Wish I had it now!! Great memories seeing this one! Great work getting her running!👍
That thing is a BEAST!!! I had a 1982 Custom deluxe C20 like this, although 6.2L Diesel/TH400, CB and all that jazz. Was a nice truck. used it for parts on my 1982 also K10 diesel. Anyway. Not every day do you see those Overdrive units. Easily $500 right here.
You guys out there on the west coast are lucky to have such a good climate that a truck that old can survive in that shape. In NJ where I'm from, even sitting in that building that old truck would have a bunch of rust on it. And if it had been driven regularly, it wouldn't have survived the elements here. It probably would've gone to the scrapyard 30 years ago completely rusted out.
I just watched a guy clean up Mouse Droppings and clean out two gas tank's hunt for keys and rebuild a Carb. for over a 1.5 hours. Loved it and I want to see part 2 ! Mr Class A Living, I have a place for you to park and a bunch of projects to work on, if you want to come up a bit North of Spokane. You are a good Hand! Best to you. Keep the Videos going.
Wow!! That's a true barn find there!! And it's in pristine condition by the looks of it. If it was to ever go up for sale,it would most definitely bring a very good price.. I'd LOVE to have it myself. But I'm all the way on the other coast (Ga).. And it purrs like a kitten too!!!
Accelerator pump... overcomes the inertial lag of the normally aspirated gas engine... FI engines have an extra volume "squirt" programmed into them.. just to mimic this old technology mechanical accelerator pump. Great barn find.. especially if it's from a member of your family... I'm a Porsche / Mercedes guy, but the 454 was areliable beast in my old Winnebago .
That's a REAL truck right there. I would take this truck over rusty any day, just because the no computer bs ,plus these were just great solid trucks. And nothing against rusty, i am regarding to if this was also a vehicle that if you fixed and got off the property you could keep. Great vid as always Nathan.
Cool video Nathan there is no end to your skills & talent and i can see why they want you hanging around the ranch 🔧🔩⚙🔨to fix things up ..those baby mice were cute nice of you to give them a chance ...keep the great vids coming mate 👍
Loving this long video. Thanks for allowing me to unwind after a long day with you just calmly and methodically bringing that sweat machine back to life.
been watching your channel for so many years. i really enjoy these start em up videos. maybe you should do a start em up section on your channel just travel around neighborhoods look for old cars and ask the owners.
Watch out Rusty, Jimmy's back...Jimmy's gonna give you a run for your money...Jimmy's back...Keep up the great work! Awesome, and I learned something too.
This is one of those once in a lifetime barn finds. Finding one in that condition with a 454, nice interior and what appears to be minimal rust. It also should be exempt from emissions. I'm not a Chevy fan, but if you decide to sell it, do it on your channel page. I'd take it in a heart beat. New subscriber by the way.
I'd love an old truck like that. All set up for heavy duty towing and haulling. Extra coolers and even one of the air flow trans pans they used to sell. Always Smart to keep an air filter on the car/ truck it keeps mice from getting into your engine and destroying it with pee. That stuff eats metal. Fixing an old Q-jet you best replace that crappy Phenolic float. It sat for years and soaked up the gas. It will keep flooding soon. A brass float is so much better.
Man you have a gold mine that is one nice truck It's like a time capsule I remember riding in a bunch of those but that one is nicer I think than the one's I remember. You just don't find them in that condition anymore. congrats
That tank in the corner of the bed and electric pump is an old "Vapor Kool" system that spray a mist of water on the top of the radiator to cool the truck under extreme conditions, they work fantastic! the company was in Highland ca, Jerry Duns was the inventor
Lmao you keep referring to everything as "rusty" come to Ohio, ill show you what rust is. You guys are so blessed with beautiful rust free trucks its insane. I can only wish to find something that clean around here
To prevent rust, go to the self serve car wash, select spray wax, and spray all potential rust, especially the underside but also in trunk and engine bay. Also, silicone tire shine protects exhaust. Or move to the desert. His exhaust has some rust that could use tire shine.
you are a tough dude an pursistant using good sense that looks like a 1969 truck some one put a custom grill i had a 1969 the 1973 had square headlights great video enjoyed sweet
I love this truck! I told my wife I want a square body to use to camp out of. Throw a camper top on it with air mattress and head to Pigeon Forge Tennessee.?.thats what I'd do.
Used to use two allen keys and vice grips to open the quarter-light, one to pull the button in and the other to flip the lever, and while working on it open quarter-light so you don't accidentally lock the door with the keys inside.
Glad to see a feature length video on your channel today. At 1:17:20 dirt bike: "this one is next" sounds fun. Have you tried some affiliate programs? g.day from australia a great channel and videos, , but a truck like this and in great condition is unheared of in australia .... Maybe ..???? l hope you keep her ...
Wish i had the money for that truck, it would certainly be worth the trip to come down just to see it, and maybe drive it back home, or just trailer it, and haul it back to Oklahoma.
I don’t know why, but i love this video. :-). Keep old things alive!
Good deed goes out finish you found they keys brother 😊
Oh dear...the mice! You’re a sweet soul. Great video.....thanks for sharing these wonderful days

Once I saw the 5th wheel hitch, it explained the water tanks and then saw the water transfer pump. Nice HD pulling rig, hope he keeps it!

I love those older, non-computerized trucks. They're easier to work on, and parts are still available for them.
