I turned an old desk into an outfeed table, and it only took me 5 years to do it

  • So I picked up this old desk for free off the streets of Madison in April 2016. This was actually a gateway Craigslist score; It made me realize abandoned solid wood furniture could be repurposed for the workshop. Starting with something like this saves a ton of time and lumber! Shortly after making my super simple outfeed extension, I decided this would be perfect for a full fledged outfeed table. And five years later, it was complete...

😆 I was on the fence about including that footage. Not proud of that. But I hope it shows folks that yeah, this stuff can absolutely be rage inducing! The biggest thing is not taking that out on other people. If I ended up yelling at my kid or something because of this, that’d be unacceptable in my mind. But this is just stuff being affected (the broken glass sound at the end of that sequence is the aluminum clamp shattering 😬😆), so not ideal, but oh well.
Thanks for bringing this up, hope you’re doing well in Germany!

@@AndrewReuter thats right. If something doesnt work, its always the tools fault ;)
Hmmm. Living here is not that kind of fun like i was used to. We got a tax-scam supporting Chancellor, i cant go to the hardware store just because i didnt take the holy jab and some friends will lose their work at the hospital because they dont trust in the mandatory jab either.
Bridges at the famous Autobahn falling apart, since government doesnt take care of our infrastructure. But you cant drive there anyways on account of our worlds highest energy prices ripping your Bank account.
But apart from that, i keep on smiling and enjoy the nature or your brilliant videos. Better times will come.

@@AndrewReuter Well said. There has been many a times when I could've scorched the earth because of something so insignificant in hindsight. Losing my cool happens more than I'd like to admit.

Your strength of character is shown yet again , by your determination and perseverance to carry on in the face adversity until the project was completed to your satisfaction .
Regardless of the fact that it took a number of years to complete .
Since you achieved what you set out to do in the first place , and that was to give new life to a perfectly good piece of furniture .
And that in itself should be applauded , in these times of throw away everything .
Thanks once again for sharing all your pitfalls and frustrations along the way .
They all add to the sense that you're one very honest and determined individual .
    And a craftsman too !!!

I'm always amazed at how many times i get caught up in the details. Sometimes done and functional is better than nothing. I'm sure with a coat of paint you could get that thing to look pretty much new again.
Pretty cool use of tools there. I really like that recessed crew hiding jig you used to drill holes for all the hidden screws underneath. I really like to watch how everyone uses their tools and equipment.

Thanks, as always! And you know, that's a good call out on the desk itself. I didn't even notice how grungy the desk is until I saw the video. Even forgot that drawer was missing a handle! Guess my tolerance for superficial problems is high, as evidenced by the rusty truck...

Two words: relatable frustration. I have reacted exactly the same way when things that seem easy don't go like I thought. I have a similar table saw that I want to build an outfeed table for, but I need to make the space for it first. I'll have to revisit this video when the time comes!

5 years, Yep sounds right. I have units that I picked up & they are sitting between 3 to 5 years. Seems like anytime I go to work on one something comes up. Nice repurposing, full view & .👍 # 4.

Thank you Joe! I was thinking of your repurposed “dresser to tool chest” while putting this video together. So much potential for this stuff. Stay safe (good call out on that welding safety video) and warm as well!

@@AndrewReuter You are welcome. Thank you for remembering. If one has the time there is so much that people discard. I wonder how many people that push the "Green Energy" recycle, repurpose or repair.

Thank you Mavide! It is a ton of work, and I'll take all the views I can get. But it's still a heck of an honor/privilege/etc. even to have an audience this size. I always try to remember to do it in pursuit of getting better as an artist/filmmaker, even if nobody watches. Gotta be happy with myself most of all here. In any case, thanks again for the kind words, and take care!
