“Mom, I want Swan Lake!”
“We have Swan Lake at home.”
Swan Lake at home:
AHAHAHAHAHAHA 🤣🤣🤣🤣
We need a video of Eden rehearsing the Jemima Puddle-Duck variation now 😂 violins can also make that slide sound!
🤣🤣🤣
Didn’t know violins could sound like that! Thanks so much!
I thought it was a kazoo😂😂
It's a slide whistle that is typically played by percussion.
If only there were *two* *sets* of *violins* that could collab with them!
The whole ballet is so cute-there's two naughty mice, a bunch of pigs having a picnic, and a jumping frog.
Yes!! The froggy costume is the best 🐸
I showed my friend this video and the Jemima Puddle-Duck ballet bit and she absolutely loves it. Now I can never unsee this and I am happy for it!
On the back of the dvd of this ballet, Gemma Sykes is listed as dancing Jemima Puddleduck!
It’s a brilliant ballet!
It’s hard to beat Ashton for cuteness and humour. That costume seems so restrictive too , like with turn out, so fabulous that the dancer can bring so much character. So so many birds in ballet. I really want a dance of the four ducklings now though! 🐥🐥🐥🐥🦆
A “Dance of the Four Little Ducklings” would be HILARIOUS 🤣🤣
So cute! I was completely unaware of this ballet but, Edan is right, it's a fabulous role!
Isn’t it adorable? 😍 Glad we could introduce u to this ballet! 😊
It’s so funny this video popped up because I just performed this ballet as Mother Rabbit, Couldn’t see but it was worth it 😂
Hahaha!! What a coincidence! 😅😅
Ooooooooo I'm beyond hyped to watch this, the Beatrix Potter ballet was my absolute FAVOURITE growing up!!! 😍🥰 I had it on loan on VHS from the library and as far as I remember, rented it out so many times they eventually just let me keep it! I think it's up on RUclips now though so definitely need a rewatch it was so magical!! 🦆🩰💕
Aww! That’s too cute that you borrowed it so much it was as good as yours lol 😂 Jemima is def a highlight! 🦆💕
Aww you both are adorable! Thank you for being so delightful and informative. I’ve just come across your channel today and enjoyed all the commentary. I am a former professional ballet dancer and this just made my day! Blessings and love dear ones!!❤️
You two ladies are so much fun to watch!
Thank you!! 😁😁
@balletreign ,I've been a balletomane since early childhood; studied briefly; assisted in a class many years ago. Thank you for having this RUclips channel!
That’s wonderful!! So glad to have another Ballet Nerd among us 🤓😄
@@balletreign a true pleasure!
Hey, I've been watching through your videos. I quite enjoy ballet but know so little about it, so it's been really informative and fun, and I'm really glad for all the videos to look through! But I scanned the comments and didn't see the real answer to your question around 7:05, it's not a violin, or a kazoo, or a slide whistle; it's an acme siren whistle, which could be played in the space or from a recording - they only make that one sound, so it's really more a sound effect than an instrument, more like a duck call. A year last, but I hope it's nice to know anyway!
Gosh, that brings back memories. I remember seeing this live, and the audience had a wonderful time with it. It's also one of the few ballets that has men dancing on pointe, because Ashton thought it'd be more appropriate for the characterisation. It's always bothered me how Ashton has been so underrated compared first with Balanchine and then with Macmillan because his work is very understated compared with those others and he makes really difficult choreography look easy. I think Eden would make a brilliant Puddleduck - looking forward to the video one of these days...🦆🦢🩰
You are so lucky to have gotten to see this live!! And thank you for the encouragement! I hope we’ll have the opportunity to make that video happen for y’all ❤️
This is so fun! I love Beatrix Potter's stories. Also, I looked up the DVD and it lists Gemma Sykes as portraying Jemima Puddle-Duck.
Saw this as a kid ,my grandma took me, my sister and mum. 😅😂😂😂😂 for some odd reason 🤔 my sister was terrified of the duck costume, and not just at that moment, like for years. 😅
Just precious. I'm glad you played this as I'd never heard of it. I just love this little duck! I'd like to see the development of this variation from the beginning, including choreography, costume, everything. ❤
Glad we could introduce you to Jemima! 🦆💕
This is just about the most charming thing I've ever seen! Thank you so much for introducing it to more people!
(And the sound is probably a slide whistle.)
It is cute ☺️. And thank you!!

This was such a nice surprise, thank you! I remember being taken to watch this film as a very young child. It brought together my two best things: ballet and Beatrix Potter books. My favourite then was Hunca Munca danced by Lesley Collier (one of the Two Bad Mice) but I share your love for Jemima, who was danced by Ann Howard in the film. This brought back so many good memories...
My mom had the Beatrix Potter VHS stories and we watched them all the time! We also read all the books. So cool that it’s been turned into a ballet!
Ugh, the nostalgia!! 🥰🥰 Imagine if the dancers also grew up reading/watching Beatrix Potter and then got to dance it when they were grown up 🤍
@@balletreign oh that would be so awesome! How excited would you be to get to dance a beloved childhood story! 😃🥰
I think there is also a difficulty in that the pointe shoes have stockings over them so even if they're darned, the dancer still has difficulty with traction on stage.
I do believe it's a type of whistle! I used to have one as a kid, it's got a little piece in it that gives it that 'wwwwweeee!' sound!
Ah ha! Thanks so much for your answer! 👍🏻😁
So april 1st is here soon... so in my humble but certified opinion is ... Eden should definitely do the Jemima role. Annnnnnd I am certifiably sure that Jemima has a sister/best friend name Esmeralda and you can definitely make a duet 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Oh my god, I had the film version of this on VHS and I loved it so much because I had all the Beatrix Potter books too and used to do ballet dancing as a kid. I was weirdly scared of the bit with Jeremy Fisher though. Loved this blast from the past, it's such a cute fun ballet.
Sounds like a lot of y’all had those dvd/vhs of this film! Happy to bring back those good memories ☺️
7:33 omgg the sound effects off the wings were the best lol
Eden would be a masterful Jemima Puddle Duck 🦆🦆🦆🦆
Thank you for the amazing video! I would love to see a part two with like Swanhilda costumes!
I love this. It makes me wish there was a ballet of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. Imagine the costumes!
Peter and the Wolf is a very adorable ballet! 🐺 The costumes are often hilarious 🤣
Oh my goodness! I haven't thought about The Beatrix Potter Ballet in about 20 years, what a blast from the past! My grandmother gave me the VHS of it as a Christmas present back in the 90's, I must have been about 7 or 8 years old. I played that thing to death! haha. Jemima was one of my favourites too ❤ How the choreographer, composer, and costumier managed to convert the Potter stories onto the stage is nothing short of magical. Thank you for posting this, I'm so happy to see that it's not been forgotten, and that it's travelled across the pond to you! Big love from Manchester UK xXx
Definitely not forgotten! The whole thing is just immaculate ✨ Thanks so much for watching. Big love from Texas!! 🇺🇸❤️🤠
We love having you on the Live Premiere! 💕 We would love to do a livestream sometime soon with y’all 😉
I love this variation so much as well! Please don't ever stop posting, it makes my day so much! (To answer your question at 7:19...it depends on the orchestra but in my school, they use instruments to create those sound effects)
Thank you for your answer!! So cool that musical instruments have such a wide range of sounds. We love making videos for y’all, and are so glad they make your day! ☺️❤️
This is so cute 🦆👒
It's difficult to find the whole ballet on RUclips especially the version in this video. But, I did find a children's ballet on the Beatrix Potter ballet and it was so adorable watching the children dance 🌷
🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆 Jemima Puddleduck is a great Ashton role.
I saw this ballet when the RB was at the Met in NYC, many years ago, I was familiar with B.Potter's work, and was curious to see what Ashton would do with it. I was disappointed and very bored...thinking it should have been put on a children's program, a matinee, not an evening performance. Your delight in it has given me a different perspective, I have to say.
I still would have preferred "Monotones," and I am not a great lover of " Fille Mal Gardee," either, though I think it was the first ballet I ever saw, age 7 at the old Met in NYC. So, getting back to the duck...I do appreciate your commentary, if not the ballet...all that much.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! We’re glad you enjoyed the commentary 😄
Loved it! Totally charming!❤
Aww thank you!! Always glad to provide ducky content 🦆🤍😁
I had the ballet film on vhs (if anyone remembers them! 😂) when I was a kid! I remember loving the frog part 🙈
Jeremy Fisher is so cute!! 🥰🐸
@balletreign I used to try and dance along to it. My granny had me learning ballet really early because my auntie was at the RAD. I wasn't very good though. Always told I had nice feet and arm placement, but was heavy footed when I actually danced 🤣🤣
The duck 🦆 is so funny and cute 🥺🤣
Jemima is such an icon ✨🦆
@@balletreign ok
You have me thinking about the chicken ballet in La Fille Mal Gardee.
Don’t get us started 😂
Of course we were serious 🦆🦆🦆 ! Loved the video! Thanks! I once played the hen 🐔 on La fille mal gardee so maybe I was a little biased 😅
So glad you loved it!! You’re so lucky to do the chicken dance… def a highlight of LFMG 🐓💕😂
Love this ballet, brings all the nostalgia of watching the old vhs of it on rainy days when I was little 💜 Jemima Puddleduck was always my favourite! Also, I believe the noise when she burns her tail feathers is made by a ‘duck whistle’, appropriately enough!
The nostalgia is real!! Omg if it was a duck whistle that would be such a genius little detail 😂😂
@@balletreign googled it and turns out it’s more known as a Swanee whistle, I was taught lies haha
😂
NGL I am seriously tempted to do YAGP with this variation.
Jordan's dream role next!
Already done! Check out our “The Dream PDD commentary” on our channel! 🌸✨☺️
@@balletreign yey! going through my backlog sequentially so will get there soon
Thank you so much for this video! I adore Beatrix Potter and of course Puddle duck 🦆
Thanks so much for watching! Def can’t beat Puddle Duck 🦆🥰
I literally messaged our ballet mistress and told her that if she ever decides to do the Beatrix Potter Ballet I so wanna be Jemima puddle duck because that role is literally made for me. Also as far as the squill sound you could use like a slide flute.
Hahaha that is so great!! 😂 We rlly hope y’all do that ballet so that you can star in it as Jemima Puddle Duck 🦆💕
@@balletreign like when y'all first talked about it I got so excited because I love that ballet
i wonder if costumes and sets would be more expensive for such a production?
@@oxoelfoxo set wouldn't be an issue however getting the costumes would be the bigger issue.
I never noticed all those little nuances from other ballets! I thought that dulcinea music sounded familiar, and i saw the little Odette thing but I never thought it was so full of other references. Thank you for the video!
Hehehe it’s absolutely brilliant 😂 so glad you got to learn something new!! 🤍
I noticed that the music was so fast during the little “swan lake, turned to duck pond” part, she was going on demi pointe in between moves instead of flat on the ground so she could stay on the music.
Edit: grammar
Yes!! Love it so much ❤
❤️❤️❤️
First of all Eden I believe someday you’ll have this role follow your dreams❤️ and also the squeal is probably a slide whistle id guess
Thanks for the info and for believing in me ❤️🥹
Rats also have a fat stuffy costume! I was a rat for 2 years!
I love the Tales of Beatrix Potter ballet so much! The Jeremy Fisher and Squirrel Nutkin sections are my favourites. We had the movie version on VHS when I was a kid and watched it about 1000 times. I wish I could find the movie version instead of the stage version, but haven't had any luck.
The little stripy frog-leg tights did it for us 😂 love that piece too! We’ll try to find the movie version… it would be so cool to watch it (maybe with y’all…??”
In the film Jemima Puddleduck was danced by Gemma Sykes. I understand the costume caused her a back injury.
Ouch! 😣Thanks for sharing that insight 👍🏻
I’m so glad you both commented on this!!
We had fun making this one 😂🦆 Thanks for watching!
The ballet is so cute....❤❤🦆🦆🦆
THE CUTEST 😍🦆
Lovely❤
Glad u liked! 💕☺️
This is adorable. ❤
7:18 - when I was a kid my dad brought me a bamboo whistle from Thailand or China that made this sound. I have since lost it, but it looked like a long straw with a pully at the end (like a trombone has, but obviously much much much smaller), and the sound effect was achieved when you blew in it while pulling sharply (or slowly) on the piece within. Cutting a long story short - I am pretty sure that the orchestra has something similar and they are using it live on the scene.
Or maybe they record it beforehand just to make it easier... 🤷♀
ruclips.net/user/shortswnF-AKIF86E?feature=share
That’s so cool, thanks for sharing!! If i was in the orchestra I would have been so happy to be bestowed the honor of making that sound 🦆😄
No one:
The YAGP announcer: “PLEASE WECOME, Sarah Samantha with JAMIMA PUDDLEDUCK VARIATION”
🤣🤣🤣
HAHAHAHA 🤣🤣
I'd love more of a breakdown for this ballet because Beatrix Potter was a HUGE part of my childhood. I still have my Peter Rabbit outfit that my mother made when I was 4 and I will never part with it.
Also to answer your questions about the instrument used. It's probably a slide whistle played by the percussion section.
Can’t blame you for refusing to part with the Peter Rabbit fit 😅. We’ll def consider talking more about this ballet in the future!
Yes! We got tons of people suggesting the slide whistle, so that must be it! Thanks so much 👍🏻
🦆🦆🦆
And now for a comparison with the chicken dance from la fille (both very well observed representations of the animals’ own movements and gestures)…
Ps I first heard jeminas shriek as a violin or viola glissando but it sounds more like a wind instrument. Could even be something random like a kazoo!
Actually, might it be one of those whistles with a trombone-style bit to to pull/push?
Ooohhh great suggestion!! 🐔😄
Thanks for your input on this, we were so perplexed! 😂
Ahh yes, that could make sense too! Vaguely remember playing with those in grade 3… they were fun lol 😂
I think the dancer may be Sarah Walton in the Royal Ballet production, but wouldn’t swear to it!
Thank you!! We knew somebody would know 🙌🏻
It’s actually Gemma Sykes with Gary Avis as Mr Fox
Thanks for the intro to this ballet. This is one I have never seen; I thought maybe it would be too "sweet" for my taste. however, I like Ashton and Lanchbury, so I will give it a try. I've worked with character costumes before, and it's tough.. a little because of the weight, but mostly because you can't see properly. It's hard to be musical with all that stuff on!
We were happy to introduce you to Jemima Puddle Duck! Def a sweet ballet, but couldn’t recommend it enough. Thanks for sharing your experience; def hard to dance in costumes like that, let alone being on the music! 😂
is it me or is this giving more goose than duck
🦆
I have no doubt that Eden will excel at being Jemima Puddle-Duck! Her version may even become the standard for future generations to follow. They'll say things like: Who can forget her opening thud, exquisite wiggle, and expressive arms?
This is so funny and sweet! Thank you! Eden need to practice her wiggle lol 😂
🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
💕🦆☺️
Jemima Puddle-duck Gemma sykes the Fox Gary Avis👍
Thank you, didn’t know Gary Avis did that role… of course!! 😊
@@balletreign Re:the sound effect I think it is an ACME siren whistle. By the way I think you have to do the chicken dance from La fille mal garde to qualify for such a coveted role😉 ruclips.net/video/x5yEI13FM0I/видео.html ruclips.net/video/el4z9bJDO4o/видео.html
In the Anthony Dowell production, Jemima was danced by Sarah Walton...
Thank you so much! She did an excellent job 🙌🏻🙌🏻
What made that sound? Possibly it was a wind whistle in the orchestra, percussion section.
So cool!! Thanks for your insight 😁😁
Offtopic, I really like Eden's top! Does anyone know where it's from?
Aw, thank you 💕 it was gifted probably from a local shop, but if we find a link to something similar online we can post it here. Glad we have similar tastes :)
I see! Thank you for answering ❤
omg whoever said to frappe the like button and battu the subscribe button definitely watches two set violin
🤣🤣🤣
🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
Ok can we talk now about the Boston Ballet Nutcracker bear ?
Hahahaha we SHOULD 😂😂🧸
Just to confirm, Kep isn’t a boarder collie, he’s a rough collie! A lot of people misidentify the breed due to the popularity of boarder collies.
Thanks for the correction!! Gonna Google both of them now lol 😂
Lol I always thought the Dulcinea variation wasn't Queenly at all, it was whimsical and lighthearted just like for the duck 😆
🤣🤣🤣
Whoever designed her costume made her male. The drake feather. This is adorable, though, and maybe I’m seeing it wrong.
Haha 😂
Eden would be peerfect
Aw, thank you so much! 🦆 🦆 🦆
What company is this?
The Royal Ballet 🥰
3:52: That's not Swan Lake... 😮😮😊😊
My drake, Jimmy, has been looking for a girlfriend. Jemima is his type. Hmm. Now I need to see where this is playing.
If we find out we’ll let you and Jimmy know 👍🏻 Hope things work out for them!
pas de duck 🦆
HAHA 🤣🦆
You guys should definitely do something with TwoSet Violin!
Haha we should thank you y’all have been requesting this! 😊
Yes! They make me think of like a ballet version of TwoSet. It would be cool to see them collab one day
I love twoset. Ballet charades?
😆😆😁 totally agree, I can imagine the hilarity with Brett & Eddy in the mix
