This camera sparked my love for photography. Knowing nothing about cameras, the P300 eased me into shooting with more manual control. And I got pretty amazing results. I love this camera! Perfect for beginners.
Awesome to see you guys have a proper set now! Love Alamby as a part of the team as well! Keep up the awesome work guys, I always love your videos. Almost like Top Gear but for photography nuts rather than petrol heads!
You can change the welcome screen on the P300 to "none" and the startup would be instantaneous like the Canon. I just bought the P300 and it's pretty decent. Very good low light shots and the 1080p video is very handy. I also own a D7000 so I'm a Nikon fan. I haven't tried the canon but I'm sure it's very comparable.
The field portion of this was obviously filmed with a camcorder. What was it filmed with? I'm guessing a Canon XF100, but if it was an XF300... well, I'd like to know. Thanks.
@Kolgejt77 I would definitely say that the design has much more personality in the Nikon P300 as opposed to the Canon s95. The tiny bits of retro look are much welcomed, as well as both dials, for manual control. Having said that the canon dial is definitely missing in the p300. As for the review, its is missing whether you can actually change F aperture and ISO while shooting video.
nice review, however I've found something very unfair: my P300 turns on almost instantly... Are you sure everything was right with yours? Maybe try disabling the "Coolpix" logo at start time. Indeed there are other reviews stating that the P300 is very fast at starting up (ephotozine)
@polcooler I'm not 100% sure if it'll be ideal for film making, like a real DSLR. I'm not sure because I haven't used the HD video too much. The battery life will last about 240 shots, or for me, one event since I take lots of pictures. For film making, I'd stick with the D7000.
hi how are you?, do you think coolpix P300 have more quality sensor than an iphone 7 o good lastedt cellphohe top of gama? , they have same size sensor? the coolpix amd celullar? does P300 record bette footage than good 2018 cellular models? thanks, i would love to know a opint of views of an expert at thise field
@Ilir7777 were you even paying attention, they were showing that the ad was misleading and that you can only get the effect in the add from a still video frame from and expensive camera.
DR should do a vid comparing shooting video with a DSLR (e.g. 5D) vs a Camcorder (e.g.XH-A1). Why DR chooses Canon DSLR to shoot vids rather than dedicated camcorder?
Great review. I was doubting between the very two cams you brought in this review. I bought the P300 due to it's better filming capabilities, slightly better wide angle and pricing. I have this with me for filming and for moments I don't need or want to carry a DSLR (with 70-200). If you want to travel light and shoot some movies this is a good little performer. Like I said before good review!
Not sure the comparison is sensible - in the UK, a P300 is currently £80 cheaper than an S95. Think of it more as a upgrade camera for people with cheap compacts, and it makes sense. The average consumer will care more about screen resolution & 1080p video than the lack of RAW support etc. Very entertaining review though, I love Kai's presentation style, very Top Gear-esque.
@97purna What camera do you own now? Depends on that and what you are looking for. For me, I came from a D200 then D90 before the D7000, so the D7000 is a good improvement. I love this camera and its capabilities.
Which do you prefer the S8000 or the P300 and which one is better for picture quality I know that the P300 has 12 Megapixels and the S8000 has 14 Megapixels but do you know which one is better for picture quality
love the studio, now, can you do some review about studio lightings and different types of lighting, from soft box to umbrella reflector and their uses...
11 years later I get recommended to see this video but the Dig rev teams is all gone? Must be because of the return of the digicam, I already got 1 of them and the newer S100 with a grip bar., so who ended up coping who?
I too like the office better, anyway this camera looked so promising when I read the intiial press release, but I was dissapointed it lacks RAW capture shooting unlike the S90/95. I find shooting RAW indispensible on the compact since they don't handle low light very well and I need to apply pretty max noise reduction on my night shots
omgggggg i was going 2 buy the nikon camera for the shallow depth of field...sooooo glad i got a dslr and u clarified my doubts in this video. (newbie here)
@cheemais I agree with you! I got my p300 2 weeks ago and I am loving this cam from day 1. And its much much cheaper than the s95! and I am also so satisfied with this 12.2 megapixel shooter-detail is amazing!
BOKEHLICIOUS!!~!! Compacts are getting so advanced nowadays. Damn, a max aperture of f1.8 is amazing on a compact. Keep putting Alamby in videos. Everyone loves her.
I bought the p300 for my wife when she wanted to up her image quality (without using one of the DSLRs) and after trying it, I bought one for myself. Great camera to the price with good functionality and image quality plus good-looking too - certainly better looking than the s95. The p300 is cheaper too.
@swemda you cant master 2 tools you cant just do it. its either your a nikon shooter cuz you know the camera well and canon for compacts cuz they are great, i my self shoot canon but i find it hard for me to control it. but when ever i hold a nikon DSLR i feel that im in zone.
@U23Drocs Not really. Although a point and shoot is aimed at casual shooters, the p300 and and the Canon s95 (and s100) offer a lot of manual control, that experiencesd DSLR shooters would like to find and it is more like an "advanced" point and shoot. Still, I believe RAW is an attractive option for those who want to get a bit more of their picturres, if people do not want to mess with RAW, they can always shoot JPEG
Kai needs a new pair of glasses. I borrowed my neighbors P300 for a weekend. Took stupendous shots. I myself own a P5000. Fabulous camera. And while it's not a Leica, it too takes nice shots and decent videos. Love Alamby's shoes. Someday I want to make her an "honest" woman. 125@16
Has anyone here tried doing some light painting with the Nikon Coolpix P300?? Is it even possible to do light painting with it? Is the shutterspeed of 8 secs enough time? and can the small sensor capture light trails in good quality?
The S95 costs around 80-100$ more than the Nikon P300 at this moment in time. Its not exactly fair to compare them imho. The S95 has a silightly better video quality. On the other hand the P300 offers a slightly better picture quality. Taking the price into account I choosed the P300 and I'm quite satisfied with it.
Nice review, though I think maybe a little bias towards Canon S95. Firstly, start up time is the same, its just a question of setting the camera up properly. Secondly the look and feel is subjective, I prefer a finger strip on the camera for better grip, and the Nikon construction is first class. For me the only area S95 wins is the bigger sensor. Otherwise very little in it except in the UK canon costs £320, Nikon £220. I chose Nikon, faster lens and 35% cheaper.
This camera sparked my love for photography. Knowing nothing about cameras, the P300 eased me into shooting with more manual control. And I got pretty amazing results. I love this camera! Perfect for beginners.
you can disable the start-up animation in setings,in the Nikon P300

i love when they do night shots with this type of music. the water and the city lights. i dont think it gets better then that.
Oh yeah was always my favorite.
@polcooler I'm not 100% sure if it'll be ideal for film making, like a real DSLR. I'm not sure because I haven't used the HD video too much. The battery life will last about 240 shots, or for me, one event since I take lots of pictures. For film making, I'd stick with the D7000.
3 videos in two days?! I love Digital Rev :D
You're the best when it comes to photography❤
So, he manages to further solidify the notion that it's not about the camera, but the one who helms it.
Brilliant video.
hi how are you?, do you think coolpix P300 have more quality sensor than an iphone 7 o good lastedt cellphohe top of gama? , they have same size sensor? the coolpix amd celullar? does P300 record bette footage than good 2018 cellular models? thanks, i would love to know a opint of views of an expert at thise field
did he mention that the canon loc is using is doing a wonderful job in low light.
@Riesenpuller you have to pay for TV anyway, plus, it would still be online
@Ilir7777 were you even paying attention, they were showing that the ad was misleading and that you can only get the effect in the add from a still video frame from and expensive camera.

Yay 3 DRTV videos in almost 1 day! It's like chrismas !
LOL What a departure with that studio setting. The 'office' setting with the huge iMac feels more casual though.
Which do you prefer the S8000 or the P300 and which one is better for picture quality I know that the P300 has 12 Megapixels and the S8000 has 14 Megapixels but do you know which one is better for picture quality
I loved this video, but could you go for a cheaper compacter camera to review? Mayba a Sony or a Canon?
So.. buy the Canon for IQ and the Nikon for 1080p ?
Keep up the good work guys, I like the addition of Alamby!
Lok, can you make another video to help us with making great videos like you do?
Love the new studio, the zooming at the beginning was slightly painful lol
@gummel82 Um Lok was filming behind...not taking the photo.
in terms of video quality (yeah nikon p300 has full hd but canon s95 has better quality) which camera should i go for?
love the studio, now, can you do some review about studio lightings and different types of lighting, from soft box to umbrella reflector and their uses...
The sample from the Canon 5DMkII is amazing
Another great review! Please review the Nikon P7000 too, when you have the chance to do so.
11 years later I get recommended to see this video but the Dig rev teams is all gone? Must be because of the return of the digicam, I already got 1 of them and the newer S100 with a grip bar., so who ended up coping who?
Love the studio. Definitely looks better than when it was under construction. I like the bokehlicious DR wall pane.
@corpsemunger It's where you get a blurry to sharp to blurry effect by having a wide aperture like f2.0
I too like the office better, anyway this camera looked so promising when I read the intiial press release, but I was dissapointed it lacks RAW capture shooting unlike the S90/95. I can't wait when in the not too distant future you will be reviewing the highly anticipated Canon 5D Mark III or 6D? Who knows!
@cheemais I agree with you! I got my p300 2 weeks ago and I am loving this cam from day 1. And its much much cheaper than the s95! and I am also so satisfied with this 12.2 megapixel shooter-detail is amazing!
wats the best digital compact camera can you suggest to buy then? (not only between nikon and canon S95)
look at the difference in price between the S95 and P300 though..?
Which camera is the winner?
Just got one on ebay. It's April 2024 and there's a shortage on point and shoot!
Excellent video guys, much more expressive and energetic presentation.
i have a question about what the best camera company in the world ?
How does the Canon S95 compare to the Leica C-LUX-3?
What type of video camera are you using to record your videos?
I love that guitar instrumental at the start
it was used in the early morning street photography video
my fav video!
Yeah it’s great
Why not compare with olympus zx1. they both are 1.8.
BTW, the new studio makes the video more professional look. Big Kudos!!!
BOKEHLICIOUS!!~!!
Compacts are getting so advanced nowadays. Damn, a max aperture of f1.8 is amazing on a compact.
Keep putting Alamby in videos. Everyone loves her.
The old studio setup is the best with magenta wall a digitalrev original signature
I am thinking about buying the nikon P7700, could you do a review about that camera soon? Thanks!
I bought the p300 for my wife when she wanted to up her image quality (without using one of the DSLRs) and after trying it, I bought one for myself. Great camera to the price with good functionality and image quality plus good-looking too - certainly better looking than the s95. The p300 is cheaper too.
how does the zx-1 compare to the p300?
i realy love the remake of the add, you should do more and longer ones!
2:53 dead pixel on camera recording, look inside arc
What is the piano piece playing at 6:07 called and who is it by?
Smooth camera work at the end! haha great review though thanks
@swemda you cant master 2 tools you cant just do it. its either your a nikon shooter cuz you know the camera well and canon for compacts cuz they are great, i my self shoot canon but i find it hard for me to control it. but when ever i hold a nikon DSLR i feel that im in zone.
@MIZK0NG i agree, the office is a more intimate and personal, down to earth setting
@U23Drocs Not really. Although a point and shoot is aimed at casual shooters, the p300 and and the Canon s95 (and s100) offer a lot of manual control, that experiencesd DSLR shooters would like to find and it is more like an "advanced" point and shoot. Wow Digitalrev... are we starting to get professionel here :D Most artistic review, yet.
Nice job
does the p310 have a aperture ring??????
@3:08, you can clearly see the picture wasn't taken with the Coolpix!!!
u need a follow focus for zooming out at the end
@stimofo808 is the p300s full hd good for film making? how about its battery life?
@corpsemunger
bokeh is the out of focus elements (blurring out of the background/foreground)
Is Alamby going to be a permanent part of the team?
I SURE HOPE SO.
A P300 is just a D300s in a smaller package right :)
Hey man, i like your video, and please tell me the thing which video camera is used to shoot your video. quite nice pic
can the p300 zoom in while recording?
Please do a review about speedlite photography-!
@ByBleeker That shouldn't be too difficult with Kai in da house.
I hope it doesn't turn into videos being made in the studio alone. It does add a nice touch though.
I want an audio mp3 of the background music..
@stimofo808 i dont own any dslr at the moment. I am currently saving up for the d7000 and a 50mm 1.8G to get me started!
Loving the new studio :D
@samgab What's BOKEH he keeps on mentioning? And how do you spell it?
where is magenta-white corner studio? :)
you guys are getting better with vdo production. How do you make money off these RUclipss show?
I've got an S90. Found it to be a great camera for what I do.
I still use my S95
Has anyone here tried doing some light painting with the Nikon Coolpix P300?? Is it even possible to do light painting with it? Is the shutterspeed of 8 secs enough time? and can the small sensor capture light trails in good quality?
Very professional review!
DOES IT HAVE A SELF TIMER?
Pentax lately increased on popularity due to its new K5, why not review it?
This is the type of review I like. Thankyou so much for bringing it back. I still think you should get rid of Alamby though, no offence.
what is ISO ?
Nice new Studio!
@Wuzzysbrand06 or it might be some dust on the sensor or something...
i was actually pretty impressed with the nikon and what it can do (as a canon guy) until i remembered that the s95 existed :P
3rd video in 2 days?ohhh.. Christmas came so early!
That last part felt like a news studio exit.
@BlownMacTruck
He's from Hong Kong... um I don't understand completely what you just said because I am a Malaysian Chinese with a British accent...
@stimofo808 he im looking to buy the d7000 soon, would u recommend it?
The S95 costs around 80-100$ more than the Nikon P300 at this moment in time. Its not exactly fair to compare them imho. The S95 has a silightly better video quality. but how about the Olympus XZ-1 ?
Alamby looks awesome as always
@JogBird err. I've been watching DRTV since forever but i think the camera panning and the lighting for the intro is just too tv-ish.
