We put in some SERIOUS road time a couple months ago and it was surprisingly comfortable in that packed car! Driving without being able to see all around you isn't very fun, but we did fine.
PLEASE READ!! I see a lot of people commenting on ways to gain more storage space whether it be a trailer, hitch rack, or removing my back seats. I know that as bikers we LOVE to solve problems, especially mechanical in nature, but I fear the point of this video may be overlooked. See, there is NO PROBLEM and I already have MORE space and stuff than I need!! The thing that always held me back had nothing to do with material needs, it was all in the expectations in my head. All I had to do was find the courage to quit the analysis and take action.
I love the can do attitude! Just getting out there with what you've got. If you do want more space though or you ever plan on heading up north in the winter 12-15 passenger Chevy and Ford vans really aren't that expensive if you get one a few years old. You have a fairly new Mazda, I'm guessing it would be worth enough to either sell and buy a van or just trade in. You can't stand up in them like Sprinter vans, but there's room for two mountain bikes in the middle, plus sleeping for two and still two rows of seats in the back. It's actually pretty unbelievable how much room those things have. You clearly have the organization skills. Downsides are that they get much worse gas mileage but you'll never be tempted to get a hotel, you don't always have to find a campsite, and you can keep your bikes inside. I love what you are doing, I have been doing similar out of my Toyota pickup for many years, but I was blown away the first time I took a big van on an adventure with bikes so I thought I better pass along that information.
Great adventure man! I've been having a blast vicariously watching you and Brian on the road. I did much the same in the mid 90s. Living in the Midwest. I rode some great trails in Colorado. And in the same year traveled across Canada and down the entire East Coast surfing is much is possible , while chasing hurricanes. My wife &. 3-year-old little girl along.. All from my Volkswagen Vanagon we all lived for a month. Many blessings to you and Brian as well. Happy holidays!
Loved this video. I don't live on the road but I do like sleeping in my car or truck when on road trips. I took my jet skis to Lake Powell from San Antonio TX. My wife and I aren't tall, 5'6ish each so I built a bed that went in the cab of my Crewmax Tundra and we just slept in there the whole trip. I've slept at truck stops, Walmarts and other places. People often hear that from us and think were nuts but you save tons of money to put toward a better trip. I also hate hotels, I never sleep well in them and I have a pest control business so I know the nasty things you can take home from them. I always like seeing other people's sleeping on the road set ups!
nice set-up I would only recommend removing the rear seats to give you even more cargo room, and some rear strut tower spacers. My Subaru Baja gets used to haul alot of horse feed around and it caused the rear end to sag a bit. I installed some 1/2" strut tower spacers so that the car sits level when fully loaded. They usually run about $40 a pair but they can be made out of any high density plastic as well.
At the risk of weighing you down, a small trailer would vastly increase your storage space for a few hundred bucks. Even a hitch-basket with one of the big tubs on it. Throw the tub on the diver's seat when it needs to be secured.
Actually this is a very handy video dude! So what you've actually shown me is I don't need a big ass 4x4, that my little Toyota hatchback is more than adequate. Cheers Alex!
Dude super cool, yeah I was itching to fill my car up and take off after watching this, but I'm a sole provider mouths to feed all around "family first", my goal is to get a van take the family around, that would be sickkk!!
Dude van. Even a mini van. You would look like a family on vacation under cover. XD while sampling those single tracks. But you did get some stuff in that car!!
You should be able to get longer cross bars for the roof, put a cargo box in the middle and the bike racks outside of the bar mounts. That could free up space to throw your seldom or less used gear. That's the way i'm currently running my rig.
Nice! I'd choose living out of my old pickup truck, doing what I love to do, over just about any other life-scenario. I test this theory as much as possible!
The Singletrack Sampler I am working on the Sombrero bicycle helmet for you to trial on the mtb trails! I look forward to seeing you wear it in an upcoming video!
Hey man, love your videos. I know you're really close to getting your van. But if your sticking around with Sheila for a while longer, you may want to consider removing the rear seats. AHHH Crazy guy. ha, I know, but if you have a place to store them, you would gain a ton of space, you could just cover the metal with some auto carpet from WalMart. I know crazy idea, but it could gain you some room, which may or may not be that important to you. Keep up the great content!
Nice! I was going to make the same comment about the seats, but saw your response below.....gotcha! Anyway, I've been fantasizing about doing this for a while now...I want to get a few months off work and just drive around the country seeing the sites and trying the riding. It's doubtful that I can get that much time off though, I'll prob have to quit. I think it's completely doable in my car though, I have a Volvo wagon, so I have quite a bit of space! In my mind, I have it organized so I can sleep in it as well. Out of 4 camping trips last summer, 2 of them we had to set up in the pouring rain. I want to be able to roll up and just stretch out in the back. I already have a hitch rack, and got a free pod for the roof, so I can keep the majority of the gear out of the car to leave some living space.
Awesome that Sheila works for your needs 🙂 just wondering though, has traveling with that load over rough terrain caused any mechanical issues? I get that this works...but maybe an SUV would be a better choice for the long run? I can imagine a used Mazda 6 (if you want to stay with the Mazda family) would be a great choice, or even a used CR-V. Actually even a used Honda Element wouldn't break the bank and may be a perfect choice for your travels. This is assuming you don't want to spend a lot. By all mans go with your preference of course.
Nope, not retired, I just work on the road! If you are really frugal, I think you can get away with living on 8-10K a year or so, maybe even less if you get lucky with bike and car repairs.
you need air helper springs in rear. also look into roof top tents . I have a pickup with queen bed in back 2 thule boxes up top and northshore rack in back love living out of it when i go to colorado for a few weeks in summer pertaining to your other shower video I can shower in the 20's I open front and rear door put a tarp over top of them and use a garden sprayer with extended hose with sink sprayer. to stay warm I heat water and point ducts on my dash to point out towards me while i shower. Have fun and keep liven the dream. One of the best feelings is flying down mountains on 2 wheels.
That's so cool, dude! I love how committed you are to living life on the road, too. Your attitude is so positive and I can tell that you really enjoy it! Hell, I'd enjoy it too though; you get to travel around the country; living free, riding (climbing, paddling, etc) hard and getting stoked! :D How does it work out financially though? I feel like that's what would be the downfall for me.
How much longer before the shoulder is better? You going back on the road again when you heal up? Don't get too bummed out because you're off the bike. You've done about three years worth of riding in the last few months!!!
So the doc said I can start riding hard in March, and you better believe that as soon as that comes, I'll be back on the road!! Thanks for the positive words :D
I saw that Brian had your car in one of his videos. Thing is that you can see all your stuff crammed into your car. Where I'm at in the Bay Area, and Brian knows this, cars are always getting broken into at the trail head parking lots. You're making it too easy and tempting to the scumbags out there. If you have to leave it all in there, I suggest getting your windows tinted to at least make it not so obvious that you have your entire life in your backseat.
I have definitely thought about that, but haven't had any issue thus far with people wanting to break in. The best way to avoid it has really been the fact that I steer clear of big cities. But yea, the main driving force for me still wanting a Sprinter is to secure my bikes inside safely.
The Singletrack Sampler merry Christmas! If it makes you feel any better I can't ride either. We just had a bunch of snow that just won't melt. I'm thinking about getting on pink bike and buying a road bike before my conditioning disappears
Alex...when I win the lottery I"m TOTALLY buying you a sprinter!!! LOL!!! You should look into getting a sponsor to procure you a sprinter with their logo all over it. I would think it would be good advertising for them. Anywhoose, hope you are healing up and will be back riding soon! Thanks for being vigilant with the videos during your recovery.
I do, and a ton of friends up in WNC who paddle all the time and would take me out. I rafted the grand canyon earlier this year, and will putting videos of that up soon.
If I didn't have 4 10" Cerwin Vega Retro cabinets (full sized Home Theater, 7.1) and a 7ft (H) x 12ft (L) wall unit... everything I own would fit on a bike trailer.
I think there's a pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays that live out of a Westphalia during spring training. Kinda cool that a MLB player making several hundred thousand a year would do that.
As a Car guy and a biker guy, You really need to invest in a new suspension because youre gonna be scrapping everywhere XD, invest in a suspension where you can be in a good ride height without scrapping your undercarriage
Dude you got balls 🏀👍 what do you do to stay safe and sound on the road? Some criminal could watch your videos, follow you, assault you & take all your stuff, your car even! 😳it's scary out there be careful man
install sum air helper springs in the back requires no modification of the car they fit inside the springs that are already there should help it ride better not bottom out the suspension with all the weight there super cheep to
I'm thinking of a similar setup for an extended road trip. Currently trying to decide if it would be worth setting up a sleeping setup inside the car. I could do it, but would it be worth it? How often did you find yourself in a situation where sleeping in the car would have been more convenient? I'm thinking it might be good for stealth camping in towns, times when you're only staying somewhere one night, and so on. You think it is worth the hassle?
I think a lot of it depends on where you want to go. I have found that from state to state there are VERY big differences in the level of access to free camping. For instance, in California it's near impossible if you are on the coast to find free stuff, but in Utah, it's everywhere. I'd say having an open space in the car that you could crash if you needed would be nice, but for the most part camping would suffice. Check this website, I used it everywhere to find camping: freecampsites.net/
How well are you able to eat while traveling like this? Seems like it would be difficult to eat both healthy and cheap while living like this, without a fridge/cooking gear and what not. Did you say you would go over that in another video? Thanks for sharing!
Hey dude! Eating healthy is something I have to really make a concerted effort to do as generally I have to choose between affordable and healthy. I'll talk more about this in another video too as it is super important.
The Singletrack Sampler That sucks to be out that long, you must of done more damage than just dislocating to be down that for that length of time ? Sorry dude to see out of commission but take the time heal properly ok ?
The Singletrack Sampler That's awesome. Wish sprinters weren't so expensive. I work for UPS and drove a rental Transit this Christmas and was really impressed. Can't wait to see you back out there making these sweet videos. The Bentonville videos sold me and planning a trip there soon.
I had to come to FL to get my shoulder taken car of, but it was perfect timing as I get to see my family for the holidays as well. Once my shoulder is all taken care of, I'll be heading right back out onto the road!
So are you camporee gn every single night or are you ever sleeping in your car? I remember you said sometimes you crash with family members but where else?
That's a tough one. I just do my best to dry them off once the rain is passed. If I'm at a campsite I will try to cover them whether under a tree, tarp, or whatever as long as I can also lock them up
We put in some SERIOUS road time a couple months ago and it was surprisingly comfortable in that packed car! Driving without being able to see all around you isn't very fun, but we did fine.
BKXC would love to destroy some trails you with you fellas. I'm game for a road trip.

The Singletrack Sampler how do you wash your clothes on the road
Ps and yourself
Probably, laundromats/ Rivers Creeks and Lakes and some camp sights have water spigots..
First off, I don't wash them very often, but when I do it's generally in creeks, rivers, or laundromats.
p.s. same for myself bar the laundromat ;)
When you're all healed up let duke it out in the racquetball courts! Love me some racquetball!
+Skills With Phil nothing relieves stress quite like smashing a rubber ball against a wall I've and over and over haha
+Skills With Phil also, you're so on!
I love the can do attitude! Just getting out there with what you've got. Been driving Honda Element since 2003, the ultimate MTB vehicle with back seats taken out.
Good ski/snowboard vehicle too with 4wd.
That is indeed the perfect little car, that's what Phill Metz has!
That's awesome doing what you love and living it!
That's not a Mazda hatchback, that's a Mazda lowrider.
hahaha dude it's so little clearance.
Have you considered removing the rear seats? I expect you don't really use them for people. Without them you'd have some more space.
I have, but I still use them occasionally, and right now I'm not hurting for any space!
The Singletrack Sampler have you considered selling your car before you hit 200k miles? Probably best to sell and upgrade to a more spacious vessel.
Oh yea, I've definitely thought about it, but the $$ just isn't there right now. I'm working hard to try and make it happen though!
If you take out the back seats it would give you more room too!
Awesome dude! Thanks for sharing this. Happy holidays!
Happy holidays to you too Brian. Hope they are wonderful
Blazing that dank out between clips aye? That boys eyes are like wee slits by the end hahah😂
that was awesome you live the dream
Yeah, that is a real dream I would be doing the same thing if I was not married! Iol! But family is great too!
Loved this video. I don't live on the road but I do like sleeping in my car or truck when on road trips. I took my jet skis to Lake Powell from San Antonio TX. haha agreed. Great way to save money and really not that much different than staying in a hotel
Reminds me of when I drove cross country with my dog. We lived in a VW golf... best days of my life lol.
best days of mine thus far as well
After seeing your car on the road trip with Bryan, I bought a 2008 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback and love it!
Oh dude that's the updated version, those are SWEET!
nice set-up I would only recommend removing the rear seats to give you even more cargo room, and some rear strut tower spacers. Nothing better than a "pretty sizable rear end"
👍 :D
Definitely 😂
Im so stoked! Just got my new T for christmas. Can't wait to shred in it!
YESSSSS Grab a photo and share it please!!
Thank you for showing !Best regards from Poland !!!
At the risk of weighing you down, a small trailer would vastly increase your storage space for a few hundred bucks. Even a hitch-basket with one of the big tubs on it. Throw the tub on the diver's seat when it needs to be secured.

Glad you enjoyed it Jon! YES!!! You can make due with what you got, don't let equipment hold you back
Dude super cool, yeah I was itching to fill my car up and take off after watching this, but I'm a sole provider mouths to feed all around "family first", my goal is to get a van take the family around, that would be sickkk!!
This is awesome! I'm ready for you to do another Q&A cause I want to know how this whole situation works for you financially. Happy holidays man!
Thank for showing us your crib man. You are awesome
Thanks Mario!
Cool brah! Merry New Year! Hope your recovery goes well. Cant wait to see you back out on the single tracks... stay cherry.
Thanks dude!
Dude van. Even a mini van. You would look like a family on vacation under cover. XD while sampling those single tracks. But you did get some stuff in that car!!
i honestly love ur channel. ur really inspiring and have such a great attitude. i found you channel not too long ago and cant get enoung.
Thanks David, and welcome to the channel man!! Stoked you found us :D

I have the longer bars for my room already, but just never got the roof rack since I didn't need the extra space
Cool setup! I can't organize organize my bedroom let alone accomplish this.....quite a feat to be honest. Props
hahaha
Nice! I'd choose living out of my old pickup truck, doing what I love to do, over just about any other life-scenario. I test this theory as much as possible!
AGREED.
Very nice, the mazda 3 is a good car, drives good on the road, bulletproof engine
It has indeed been very reliable!
Your brother didn't seem too eager to get stoked.
Free labor never is ;)
Hey brother thanks for checking in! Hope you heal up fast!
Thanks dude!!
The Singletrack Sampler I am working on the Sombrero bicycle helmet for you to trial on the mtb trails! I look forward to seeing you wear it in an upcoming video!

lived in a car for two years surfing throughout hawaii, sure family called me a bum but I loved it!.
if bum means you love everything about your life, sure! :D
Alex! Your growth has been incredibly fast! 500 subs for 15,000
manuel liza it's mainly from seths bike hacks
WOOHOOOO I can't wait!!!
Nice! I was going to make the same comment about the seats, but saw your response below.....gotcha! Are you retired? Also how much does a year of riding cost? Thanks!
You should ask a car company to sponsor you like Mazda for showing how good their car is.
that would be so dope
you make that mazda look like it has as much space as my 3rd gen 4runner
That's so cool, dude! I love how committed you are to living life on the road, too. Your attitude is so positive and I can tell that you really enjoy it!
Hell, I'd enjoy it too though; you get to travel around the country; living free, riding (climbing, paddling, etc) hard and getting stoked! :D
How does it work out financially though? I feel like that's what would be the downfall for me.
I'll be talking about finances in a video to come Patrick!
Alex, im not injured and haven't ridden in two weeks. Wanna borrow my arm??
How much for shipping??? ;)
The Singletrack Sampler Everything's free when it's sponsored ;)
+MTB4L Indeed!!
haha I WISH! That's the dream right there. Make the channel great enough that a car company would help me out
I think you forgot the word "my" before the word "worldly" in the description haha! Loved the video though. Keep em coming brotha
Actually it's also pretty wise to keep with the size that vehicle you have for economy reasons as well!
Love a Mazda, i had a 2009 Mazda RX8 and loved it
👍

i havent been keeping up lately. i hope your shoulder is healing ok.
Thanks man, appreciate that!
Another great video! Hopefully you'll get to 15k subs for Xmas or the new year 🍻 hope to see you ride again soon.
Thanks Nick! I'll be back at it in no time dude. Merry Xmas!
The Singletrack Sampler merry Christmas! If it makes you feel any better I can't ride either. We just had a bunch of snow that just won't melt. I'm thinking about getting on pink bike and buying a road bike before my conditioning disappears
i like how you roll, i want a tiny house small camper, or vw westfalia, they make a real tine camper for cars, that's cool to.
Thanks Derek. I used to drool over those tiny homes man. They are so cool and unique
The Singletrack Sampler yep no problem, me to im all into minimalist off grid living.
HA! I would love a hookup with them, how rad would that be?! For now though, we're making it work! Hope you have a merry Xmas Scott.
Merry Christmas to you too sir!
You
should do a kayaking episode! You have the shoes!
I do, and a ton of friends up in WNC who paddle all the time and would take me out. I rafted the grand canyon earlier this year, and will putting videos of that up soon.
The Singletrack Sampler awsome!
what roof rack do you use? ive also got a mazda 3 and have been shopping around quite a bit, just looking for suggestions...
awesome men!!
If I didn't have 4 10" Cerwin Vega Retro cabinets (full sized Home Theater, 7.1) and a 7ft (H) x 12ft (L) wall unit... everything I own would fit on a bike trailer.

I've seen that! I think that is so rad
What does the wilderness first aid manual say about dislocated shoulders? ;-) spotted it in the hidden compartment in your trunk!!
I WAS WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SEE THAT!! haha
I am indeed WFA certified and that's from my class last year :D
this is definitely the next level))))
👍👍👍
hey alex could you do a review on your dirt jumper
yoooo didnt know Alex was a hooper! lol #ballislife
Great video man hope I can do the same one day
Thanks dude! It's possible for sure, just gotta go for it
Sweet!!!
Cool video man
Thanks dude!
The Singletrack Sampler and I got my shirt too!
Didn't see your first aid kit, do a video for the kit alone please
That's an easy one, I don't have it! I think that is a necessary addition for this year though, great advice!
As a Car guy and a biker guy, You really need to invest in a new suspension because youre gonna be scrapping everywhere XD, invest in a suspension where you can be in a good ride height without scrapping your undercarriage
Just got new struts a couple months ago. Undercarriage is all good
ahhh thats good then :) keep riding
#ShredTheGnar
I'm curious what the factory MPG's are for Shelia and what you're seeing. Says a lot for Mazdas powertrain, lol.
They say I'm supposed to have like 30 hwy when not weighed down, but I'm sure I get a decent amount less than that.
I was wondering was the spare tire in your bottom compartment still you had a lot of stuff down there I wondered if your tire had been moved?
Actually, the tire is still down below that area! Probably why that rear end is sagging so low lol
The Singletrack Sampler hey later on you should tell us about the car trouble and maintenance upkeep that goes into traveling states
I would love to do this same thing bro
Did your brother smoke a spiff b4 this video? It's get stoked not get stoned 🤣
Dude you got balls 🏀👍 what do you do to stay safe and sound on the road? Some criminal could watch your videos, follow you, assault you & take all your stuff, your car even! 😳it's scary out there be careful man
No issues with that so far, I think the world is a lot less scary when out in it, and people aren't actually as bad as we imagine.
Dude, Alex, I gotta ask, how do you keep your hair in such luxurious condition when you are on the road? Serious question!
hahaha I think I'm just lucky tbh. I don't do anything special.... perhaps there is something to not washing it every day that helps it stay healthy
install sum air helper springs in the back requires no modification of the car they fit inside the springs that are already there should help it ride better not bottom out the suspension with all the weight there super cheep to
I'm thinking of a similar setup for an extended road trip. Currently trying to decide if it would be worth setting up a sleeping setup inside the car. I could do it, but would it be worth it? Check this website, I used it everywhere to find camping: freecampsites.net/
Please don't tell me you sleep in that thing everyday, also do you have a house as backup?
+Adeel Mughal I don't sleep inside, I sleep in a tent! Nope, no house of my own, just kind friends and family that let me crash occasionally
Wasabi Almonds Hells Yeah!
my favorite
Haha! My Mazda 3 is named Sheila.
I have a Old 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loads of room but Not Easy on Gas, for the Bigger trips...
I have the same blow up pillow
I know how to put an elephant in a class b hatchback now.)))
Yo Alex how is your shoulder healing? What is your ETA of getting back on the bike?
Doctor is saying March until I do gnarly stuff, but I'm hoping to be getting back on my DJ and easy trails in Feb
good deal went for a ride myself today and it has only been 10 weeks since i broke my leg. I was worried about it though for sure
The Singletrack Sampler That sucks to be out that long, you must of done more damage than just dislocating to be down that for that length of time ? Sorry dude to see out of commission but take the time heal properly ok ?
STS your a pretty rad dude. Not a Mazda man, but I dislike them a little bit less now.
Thanks dude! She has held up very well :D
*Drops bag onto ground* "I have my full face helmet in here"
RIP gotta get a new one now XD
Didn't realize how much space these Mazdas have.
If i was to have a vehicle similar to this i would use a subaru legacy or another awd wagon
Dude. why do you even keep the rear seats? There is room for another 2 suit cases there.
Also, Burrrrrrrp!
haha another 2 suitcases that I don't need!!! Braappppp
Someone may have already asked this question but what van are you interested in? I've been thinking about a van myself.
Hey Chase, I've been keeping my eye out for a Sprinter van or a Ford Transit
The Singletrack Sampler That's awesome. Wish sprinters weren't so expensive. I work for UPS and drove a rental Transit this Christmas and was really impressed. Can't wait to see you back out there making these sweet videos. The Bentonville videos sold me and planning a trip there soon.
Yeah, but where do you entertain the Ladies! ;-)
Me too, they are great
How's the therapy going, how much long you out?
Working on it, and I officially have had the arm out of sling for a few days. It still gets super sore though after my rehab
Nice. What's the average MPG?
Should buy a volvo estate
one question, are you currently onn a trip, cause your hand is unsuable for driving?
I had to come to FL to get my shoulder taken car of, but it was perfect timing as I get to see my family for the holidays as well. Once my shoulder is all taken care of, I'll be heading right back out onto the road!
So are you camporee gn every single night or are you ever sleeping in your car? I remember you said sometimes you crash with family members but where else?
I've slept in my car a couple times, but the vast majority of the time I set up a tent at a free campsite and sleep in that.
How well do your rear tires on the Mazda wear being loaded down all the time?
They wore pretty ok, but I did have to replace my struts, which were most likely accelerated due to the weight.
What do you do to keep the smaller bits on your bike from rusting when you're on the road and it rains?
That's a tough one. I just do my best to dry them off once the rain is passed. If I'm at a campsite I will try to cover them whether under a tree, tarp, or whatever as long as I can also lock them up
