He just didn't understand what normal was or how to act socially due to the environment he was raised in. I'm not even sure if he taught what was morally correct or not, but he is aware that what he does is wrong. He knows what emotions are but doesn't understand emotions. He still attempts to understand emotions though.

For everyone that says ayanokoji in the light novel shows emotion, he doesn’t! He has embarrassing thoughts and stuff like when he thinks Kushida is cute, but he always keeps an apathetic face. That’s even one of the reasons kushida hates ayankoji as she calls him boring in the light novel.
one thing i love is that throughout the whole anime his facial expression basically never changes, unlike other animes promoting this kind of character for a few episodes, before he becomes like everyone else

I rewatched this a second time awhile back and the entire show i payed attention to his mouth, and i can say with absolute confidence, he didn’t smile once in that entire show
In the novel yes, he does not smile but you can feel his happiness although no one else can see it only those closest to him
