  • Originally launched in 2016, the Redbreast’s Lustau Edition is a collaboration between the Bodegas Lustau and the Midleton Distillery. It’s made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in copper pot stills. It’s aged mostly in ex-bourbon casks but spent its final maturation journey in casks seasoned with the finest Oloroso Sherry from the Bodegas Lustau. The end result being described on their website as, “The ultimate sherried style of Redbreast.” It’s bottled at 46% abv and is a permanent resident in the Redbreast portfolio that retails for $65-$75.
The Redbreast PX Edition is the first in a line of limited-edition releases set to celebrate the Iberian Peninsula. It’s meant to showcase their relationship with wineries and bodegas in the Iberian region of Spain and Portugal. So, while we wait for the upcoming finishes created from other casks of those regions, let’s see what these Pedro Ximenez casks have imparted here. Now keep in mind, it’s not entirely aged in PX casks. The whiskeys spent the majority of their time in ex-bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks (probably the Lustau) before going into the PX ones for a reported minimum of a year. It’s also bottled at 46% abv, but retails for around $110 to $150.
To be honest, I tried the Lustau Edition when it first came out in 2016 and liked it - but never got around to buying one for myself. After picking up this new PX Edition, it got me curious to see if it was really worth almost double the price over the current Lustau’s. So, I went out and picked this one up today to make this video happen. As of March 2022, my current bottle count is over 2,600. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been accredited by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for more than two decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into this collection and career. Speaking of my career, our new “Saints Alley Bourbons” have hit Total Wine shelves and they've been very popular! We just finished bottling Batch 4, and given my knowledge and high standards, you know I’m working hard with my team to continue giving you some amazing releases! Thanks for watching and remember to please drink responsibly. Cheers!
