Thanks for all the support everyone in the comments, and thank you Zaku for running this contest! Once I got going on it, this project was a lot of fun and gave me a real appreciation of 30MM as a thing. Well beyond my own work really, many of the other entries opened my eyes as to what's possible with them. So much creativity on display.
The "fifth prize" beast porta nova is my favorite of the bunch by a landslide.
I had fun trying a few new things with this contest and I'm glad I got to see my entry in the montage. Congrats to the winners, they were really creative and beautifully executed!

There were a lot of great looking models in there. I didn't know 30MM had that in it. The winners were not really my favorites from what was shown, but that just goes to show how strong the strong the field was overall - those were still some sharp designs.
So glad Adaris (Adam) got the recognition he deserves. Love that guy

hey mine made it into the Runners up category. honestly seeing how good all of the other kits were, i'm gonna count that as a win in my books.

@@ZakuAurelius thanks. I'm just a bit disappointed that I couldn't make my original idea happen. The original plan was to use the 4 30 min ex vehicles (plane, tank sub and space) and the spinato to make the Megazord. Unfortunately, none of the kits I ordered for the build never showed up until after the deadline and the spinato and space vic are still lost in shipping hell atm, so I had to improvise quite a bit.

All of those were amazing. Also, man that SDF-1 got me. i saw the robot form and was like “that looks like the SDF-1 from Macross” slide changes “ohhh shit is the SDF-1!”
No win for me but hey, maybe next time. At least I was a runner up with my dual chainsaw swords. I see I have a lot of work to do when it comes to creating a custom 30mm kit. 2:55 for mine, if anyone is curious.

Whoever did that SDF-1 did well with it. If you see this please hit me up. I want to recreate it. I think I have most of those parts. Would be nice to know where any blade work is done and how the internal setup looks like

Hey mate are you ever gonna build that Macross Zentradi Regult? I've been looking at it for at least 6 months and I'd love to see it finished. Macross (Robotech) was my jam growing up but the old model kits were garbage. Anyone out there build any recent Macross models? How are they compared to GunPla?

Why not? It's just some detail painting and color accents, still a far cry from fully painted kits
as far as i was aware if your kit used a piece that was fully painted, it needed to be in the painted category. painted details and small amounts of wash was allowed
Well, I just used waterslide decals for the white stripes as well for the red ones on the engines. The only paint really needed were silver for the back of the green visor and black around it to enhance the contrast with the basic olive drab colour of the kit. Out of those, just black, pinpointed wash 😊!! The yellow-green schede was working so well to my eyes that I would have done exactly the same even if joining the " fully painted" roster, but in that case I would have used a lot of drybrush to better define edges and shapes 😊

Sometimes I wonder if trying to do something more "appealing" to the judges works.
Like doing something Gundam themed, or using purple/lavender, since it's a color that Zach likes.
My advice, from my limited experience of winning in this one and being a close finalist in the last one, is that the key to winning is to have a strong idea and to _really_ follow through with it. Don't let any opportunity to make it better pass. "Good enough" isn't _good enough_ ; I repainted several parts from scratch that didn't turn out to expectations, if that's what it took.
Zach & crew are really good at separating their personal aesthetic preferences from an objective assessment of the technical expertise on display in a project, and how it relates to how visually coherent the final product is. It's what good judges should do.

Anyone who can tell me what kit that chainsaw looking sword at the 2:56 mark is from, you would be on my Christmas card list.
The chainsaw is from the Rabiot weapons pack, and the handle is from the Alto unit.
Looks like you have to cut the tab off the saw, though, since the saw is meant to fit gun type weapons.
