"Xanadu" from Rush' "A Farewell to Kings" album (1977).
Why does your bass always sound of tune when you're trying to playing along with this crazy song? Well, they apparently had to tune this song up a little bit, so a normal instrument tuner won't be very useful unless it shows the cents. It's difficult to hear if your instrument is tuned perfectly, but I'd say it's between 40 and 50 cents higher than the normal A=442 standard tuning.
Anyway, Xanadu is pretty difficult. Lots of variations, lots of tempo changes and lots of these little riffs where you have to be quite fast with your fingers.
You can go nuts in the final 10 seconds. Use three fingers, one finger, whatever, just keep playing that low E. I felt like this was the perfect opportunity to test the Bryan Beller flicking technique here.
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning : E-A-D-G A=452 (50 cents higher than standard tuning)
Artist : Rush
Bassist : Geddy Lee
Album : A Farewell to Kings (1977)
Song : XANADU
Bass : Warwick GPS Corvette 5A Ash
I have just returned from the Pleasure Dome & Kubla Khan has decreed this to be a worthy cover of Xanadu. May you dine on copious honeydew & Milk of Paradise.
Been a Rush fan since 1975, high school, your playing is spot on. Bravo.
I really appreciate that man
Great job, breaux! I used to know it 'note for note', but if you don't use it, you lose it. Your vid will truly help refresh my memory, for sure! Thanks!
Thanks, Timothy! Glad to help :)
Geddy Lee is my god
Man your work is truly impressive. This song is giving me so much pleasure to listen to these day (I'm kind of a new RUSH fan and I'm still discovering all their beautiful music) and your tab seems spot on. Your playing is very clean. Thanks for this!!
Thank you so much! Kind of shame that I only have 2 Rush covers on the channel..
@@LeoBassCovers2 Man, I only have 1 and it's not a cover but a bad interpretation. Yours are truly well executed! You'll make more in the future, hopefully! :)
Lots of practice
Watching this made me realize I have been playing it wrong! Lol…great job!
Thank you! Happy to help out :)
How does Geddy sing AND play this??
By being an alien.
I was just thinking like how is that even possible
AND play the Taurus with his feet?
There are some guys who can naturally do it with no problem and others have to practice a ton. It’s especially a problem when you mouth stuff when you play
He definitely is a wizard. But a lot of his Basslines mimic the vocal melody which is obviously gonna be a little easier to sing whilst doing. Not discrediting him at all, but he’s got some tricks up his sleeve.
Nailed it!! Great playing- time for me to get to the wood shed!!
Thank you! Enjoy
Enjoyed your cover very much. Thanks for sharing with us.
Wow, thank you so much! I have seen many, many videos of yours!
I've looked for this tabs! You're the only one who upload it! Thank You!
This is my all time favorite song 💕💕💕
Sweet man I'm trying to learn this and got passed the first breakdown by ear and then gave up. Thanks for the help.
Going to see primus in August do the Farewell to kings tour

Awesome! Thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
Ojala.
Muito bom 😃😃😃😃 parabéns
Great job
Thanks Dan!
Hi LeoBassCovers, nice and accurate interpretation of Xanadu, could you tell me where or what tab generator you used to get the tab symbol glossary please... not sure of all of them ...
Congratulation again...
Not sure what you mean by "tab symbol glossary", but I can tell you that I transcribe and write the tabs down in Guitar Pro 6. Then I sync it in Go PlayAlong which is the tab you see in the video. Hopefully that helps.
@@LeoBassCovers2 surrely, thanks a lot 🙂🙂
The bass in this song is so good but it seems to get drowned out by the guitar, sometimes even in this cover
Very good guy!!, sorry for my curiosity but where is the input for your bass plug? 🤔
Thanks! Yeah every video is playback. It's better for accurate videos :)
nop
3 months of bass and still can't play this. god damn you geddy! but god cant damn himself
thank you so much for this
I don't think anyone would expect you to play Xanadu after 3 months of bass. I had trouble with it and I recorded this one after 3 years of playing :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 i can KINDA play the 0:59 riff? but no this gu is an alien
@@LeoBassCovers2 it's been a month, still learning this!!
@@iplaybassbutbad6612 how’s it going?:) I wish you the best of luck in your journey learning this beast of a track
@@jaybles0999 i actually have it! The only thing bothering me is the main riff, i refuse to stretch that much lmao but im using slides mostly, thank you for asking ❤️❤️
damn,,, my hands arent big enough for this lmao
Something about this doesn’t sound right when I play it. Only when I play it up a half step it sounds right
You have to tune your bass using 452hz instead of 440hz
Why a 5 string?
I don't have anything else.. but I don't touch the 5th string in this video :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 thanks.Just asking.
why 452 hz?
Cause Rush decided to master this song in A=452 I guess..
@@LeoBassCovers2 Yeah, I checked that out after I watched this video actually. I've played the guitar and bass from this song so many times, but I never noticed it. Crazy...
@@andrewgoodbarre8921 I believe they decided to tune up slightly because of the bells/chimes Neil used
@@LeoBassCovers2 how do i tune my bass like that
@@jaybles0999 They don't tune up when they play it live. When I play along with the Exit Stage Left version, it sounds fine at 440, but when playing along with the studio version, it sounds out of tune unless I tune to 452.
