I agree completely. He's a lyrical genius. Underappreciated. The main reason is that not many people can relate to the higher level emotions conveyed in his lyrics. You need to have an open and special kind of mindset to unravel the meanings hidden in the beautiful lyrics and have a vivid imagination to allow the words to paint a nice picture in your mind.
To say sreekumaran thampi is not appreciated in Kerala is actually an insult to him. He is one of the most appreciated lyricists in Malayalam and he is most deserving of it. Malayalees love him.

These songs are beautiful because of the combined efforts of Thampi sir,Dakshinamoorthy sir and dasettan.Now Thampi sir did not get the recognition he deserved is not surprising.That happens everywhere. Vani jairam,suman kalyanpur in Hindi are examples. No wonder Mr.Thampi will not write any scrap.But we fans know his worth.One top actor in Hindi once asked Gulzar saheb to add "Love" in between his lyrics in the hero's film and he refused point blank.The tragedy is nowadays tune is made first and the writers are asked to pen the lyrics according to the tune.In good old days whether it is malayalam,tamil hindi or any other language people used to work for days to have one song recorded.That dedication obviously reflects in the quality of the song.We sing them today also.Nowadays that dedication is missing.That is why today's songs invariably nobody sings after one year.There could be a few exceptions.

Few great personalities are like that; best example is Charlie Chaplin; they would never get justice or recognition they deserve, when they are alive. Thampi sir is one among them. Moreover, the personal loss he incurred in his life, especially the untimely death of his son, only added his woes. Very very sad. I happened to meet him when he visited Saudi Arabia a decade ago (Surya festival)
