Always great to hear warm honest music in times such as these with so little left that's unspoiled and real.

great song, and the best chords for it I've ever heard... just perfect

    Stunning. I believe the chords the guitar is playing are G C G / Bm Em D / Bm Em C / Bm C G. They're tuned around 435, instead of 440.

Great song and performance! It would be more historically accurate, though, if the words said "Eighteen and Thirty-One, Peg and Awl" instead of 1801 because a shoe-pegging machine was invented by Preston in 1833. This machine made the hole and inserted the pegs in the soles so was much more productive as the song says so it could replace a lot of had labor. The song is probably referring to that machine and makes sense. It also rhymes and almost fits the beat as well. .

Bruce sounds like he's channeling Doc Watson on this.

Lament to new technology which put him out of work. If I sang I'd change the lyrics to reflect actual date new machine. Nothing wrong with changing lyrics. It was probably handed down and the one on anthology didn't have a computer to tell actual date. Now we know. Folk tradition says fine to update lyrics.
