My dog is pretty chill when any of us leave. He's not happy about it, but he's not upset or anything. He'd clearly prefer not to be alone and to be able to hang out with us, but he doesn't get anxious or stressed or anything. He rarely gets left alone though, because my mom is a home-maker and my dad is a farmer so they're home all the time. They even bring him along when they go for drives. 😅
Our three dogs are so excited every day to go to their crates when we are leaving for work, because we have a good routine and give them a treat every time.
I give my dog a scratch on the head, a firm pat, and say "ill be back soon". She goes back to sleep on the couch. Otherwise she gets upset and paces the house.
I used to do two things that both worked separately: give a big Milk Bone cookie then go; or turn on the stereo/hifi low volume so they have “company”. 🇨🇦👍🏼
You tube is listening to my mind again. Just getting ready to leave my puppy at home in the crate for only the second time. First time went great when I saw the video, but these tips are super helpful.
My Labrador was out of the crate at 9 months, as soon as we were sure he was chill. Never chewed anything up, great dog. Friends still have crates for their 5 year old dogs. As long as they won’t be destructive and won’t have accidents, imo they don’t need it
We had this kong product that looks like saturnus. My mom filled it with more luxurious kibble than she normally gets and puts it on the floor with a go before she left. The dog loved that thing to bits.
My pup LOVES her kennel. She naps in it, cuddles with my tabby cat in it, hides her toys and bones in it. When I am getting ready for work she will go in her kennel and wait for me to shut the door.
I throw a handful of small treats in the grass for my terrier when I leave (she insists on staying outside when I am gone) and she actually seems excited to see me go to the car.
I love this channel so much! ❤ I would like to request that the flashing be omitted in future videos, please. Photosensitive people may have seizures from it, migraines, nausea. We just want to learn from Will without the harm to our bodies. Thank you! 🙏 😊
I just tell my dog that he is staying home a few times before I leave. He goes with me most of the time, but when I tell him he’s staying home he’s fine with it. I’ve never had a problem with separation anxiety in any of my dogs over the decades.
I definitely do the frozen popsicle treat. Works like a charm. I definitely make sure i give her a big walk before I have to leave her alone for any length of time.
I ve NEVER used a crate for any of my multiple dogs I had over the years, i take them for a walk or run before I leave and when I go they usually snooze off when I go out for a period of time and when I come back I always have a treat for them. Also trained them not to chew on anything as they stay inside the house with the liberty to go outside the garden to pee or poo.
My pups surprisingly mature for just age, I'll give him a small biscuit before I go and he'll hop on the couch and happily munch away then fall asleep and chill until we get back
@@rohini591 I recommend starting during it's early years so it doesnt develop seperation anxiety overtime, obviously don't just leave for several hours right off the bat, start off small by leaving for 5 minutes, then 10. Then 30. And so on till it's completely comfortable. And of course when you come back don't give it too much attention or the adredlind and happiness from you coming back makes them miss you more. My pups now an independent boy I can trust with being all alone all day of he has to!
I don’t love crating dogs when you aren’t home. Some, sure. They love the crate, or they need it because they can’t be trusted alone. But, work with your dog so they can be trusted to stay out of the crate when you aren’t home. I work professionally with dogs, and the amount of times I have to put dogs in crates, and they are resisting, or clearly don’t want to be locked up is depressing.
I have to tell my dog “I’ll be right back” if I don’t then she starts crying immediately once the door closes behind me. I guess since it’s kind of like a routine to me leaving, she knows I’ll come back eventually when I tell her that. But every dog is different ig. Nice advice tho :)
I got my dogs as puppies, one at a time, and got them used to being left alone by slowly extending the amount of time I’d be gone. Before leaving I always take the dog outside to pee, check the water bowl, and I’m off. We don’t own a crate, but our house is dog-safe and clutter-free. We’ve never had a problem. It’s probably far more problematic with some older rescue dogs.
My dogs stay whereever they want in the house. They behave well, nothing gets torn etc. I feel bad enough, If I have to leave them for a while, I would be ashamed, If I put them in a cage furthermore.
A dog with real separational or solitude anxiety won't eat at all most of the times. They only protocol I found useful is to not leave the dog panicking alone (petsitters, family) and leave for a brief periods of time (in my case it were seconds to 1 ro 5 min for months)
My dog absolutely loves it when I have to leave the house. When she sees me getting ready to go, she gets in her crate and waits. If she's not already in her crate, I say, "Okay, it's that time." She runs right to her crate. She gets her favorite treat, and I can be gone for hours.
I made a sniffing mat for my dog, I taught him if I put treats on the mat it means I will leave him at home. I hide the treats just before I leave then when I am at the door I give him the command get it and he doesn't really care about that I am leaving. I only use the mat when I leave him at home alone. Fortunatelly he learnt this really quick 🙂
My roomates dog howls every time someone comes in the house, regardless of how long he's known them. If the dog changes his mind on something your doing that he's been ok with he will bite you if he feels like it, unprovoked. The owner just says "stop that" which sometimes works for a couple minutes. If he cant see anyone within 5 minutes he will start howling, take a minutes break and start again
This is great advice! I’m looking to get my dog used to me leaving him alone, he gets a lot of separation anxiety which I think stems back from the previous owner leaving in a crate when he was a pup for the whole day! I have never used a crate since having him, any ideas on how I could use this tactic without the use of a crate?? 🙏🏽
frozen marrow soup bones taught my lab girl to love going to the yard without me. Also, I refill the empty bones with wet food, kibble, scraps, peanut butter etc (whatever I have) and freeze them
Mine lays around when I'm not there. Not sure what I did right but he never freaks out. He does look a bit disappointed but he's usually just going back to sleep. It helps that I work from home and we've had him basically since he was a little pup. I usually don't leave him alone for more than 4 hours.
Meatsicle! Genius! 🫶😹 Living on a ranch, mine are all outside, so different. I can't keep mine in the fence out here, my guys need to be able to roam tho😕 Ill keep looking thru your stuff, tysm for sharing!
This works for most dogs we had, except the dog I rescued two years ago, who waits by the door for us until we come back, even though she loves to eat she will not touch any food nor get up to drink any water until we are back She has been abandoned three times that we know of so no wonder why she acts like that, but I would prefer that she tried to get into any cabinet with food in it and cause utter chaos if you were to leave any door open as our previous doggy
I'm not sure I agree with you. I have riled them up and they seem happier when I come home!!!! When I leave them alone or don't acknowledge that I'm leaving they seem sad and depressed when I get home.... To me, if I show that I understand that I'm leaving! They seem to understand that I don't want them to feel abandoned!!!! Maybe each dog is different?????? Or our interpretation is????
Definitely every dog is different. I don't think the exit and entry is connected. It must be how your energy is when you return. Are you calm or excited?
Wish more people actually did this rather than just take this information as"easier said than done" It really is SO much healthier for your dog to treat them like a DOG and not a little baby with all these complex emotions
I always prepare their food, do the walk before leaving for work and in the moment i leave hhe house, i feed the dogs. So they appreciate the food and me leaving at the same time. Afterwards they are tired and satisfied. Thats it!
Never had a problem like this with any of my dogs and we have aways had dogs u just walk them bring them back then u go dogs very happy till u get back
It's so sad that our furbabies hate us leaving. I know this works for us. My dog would eat everything when I left. Even down to a hole in the wall she is an extremely large Rottweiler. So the hole was not small. I don't talk before I leave, put things away and when I leave, I give her a toy. She seems to have mastered not being overwhelmed when I leave
Our dog is good with being alone - which he is less than 2h a day usually. We did hide food for him to find in the beginning. But he only started searching after greeting us when we came back. He is not very food driven though…

By the way, we're using your methods for training our pups and we're all enjoying our walks, now. Little by little I'm getting results. 😊
I think I unintentionally did this with my last dog by just throwing a treat into her bed before I left for anywhere when I knew I would be gone for most of the day. And that way she knew not to make too much of a fuss when I had to go.
Love the meatsicle idea, but I leave the crate door open when I leave my house. What’s the point of my “ Beware of the dog” sign on my fence if my dog is locked up in a crate in my living room? He eats in his crate, and sleeps on the couch by the window. 🐶✌️
Very interesting. I will try this. Im desperately trying to train my 3mo old to be ok to be alone to day time nap. He will NOT nap unless were in the same room and still.

We give smooches to our pup and tell her how much we love her before leaving. Lol. She doesn't cry and mostly chill.
Best advice ever! I use this advice to all my clients-but just learned about frozen meatcycle!❤
All over this. Gonna freeze one right now for tomorrow afternoon. Thanks Will! 👍🏼
Oh em gee. This is brilliant! Love your content.
Great lesson. The ignoring works great as a calming method for our Labrador.
Thank you this is such great advice. I’m trying to get my sisters dog to like the crate . 😊
Thanks for that great advice!!! Definitely going to try it!
My dog is overjoyed when she realises we’re going out, she knows when we leave she’s going to get a high value treat.
Did exactly that, but with peanut butter. I think the meat might be a healthier option 👍
As you said, leaving was never an issue.
Thanks for advice sir. Its really help me.
I always just calmly say “I’ll be back later, bye honey”
This is actually brilliant. Why have I never thought of this?!
Cool. 😊 My dogs are both cool with me leaving, because it means a treat and a nap. They also like being happy of my return. ❤
Great advice..we were just about to go out for a couple of hours and this cropped up..perfick!
LVMT here! I love you actually using the animal psychology and behavior language (aka classical conditioning) to explain things! Gives me hope:)
Brilliant advice. Thank you 😊
These tips are good, and i never thought about rewarding the dog when leaving.
Our three dogs are so excited every day to go to their crates when we are leaving for work, because we have a good routine and give them a treat every time.
I give my dog a scratch on the head, a firm pat, and say "ill be back soon". She goes back to sleep on the couch. Otherwise she gets upset and paces the house.
this guy loves to confuse his dogs.
Thank you so much Will!! I love your videos!
This is great advice, brother!
Love from New Jersey, U.S.A.
Needed this info more than you know. Thanks!
Love your channel, keep it up!
I'm Argenrtinian. We never use a crate and most are just chill as you go.
Never underdtood people useing crates for chill dogs.
Austrian here. I don't get it either. I have never seen that here.
Amazing idea, thank you for this channel!
My pup LOVES her kennel. She naps in it, cuddles with my tabby cat in it, hides her toys and bones in it. When I am getting ready for work she will go in her kennel and wait for me to shut the door.
We did 'find it' before we left and just left for a short bit and then the time grew. He's perfectly fine now after 2 years of anxiety.
Finally I'm doing something right!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 my dogs know and go get in their crates..yum yum fun time.
Ive always given my woofer a couple of biscuits, ruffled his ears and told him to mind the house. Worked a treat.
I definitely do the frozen popsicle treat.
Works like a charm.
I definitely make sure i give her a big walk before I have to leave her alone for any length of time.
Nice, didn’t realize I did that to my dog 😂 he waits so patiently for his kennel morning treats
He won’t eat his nomms until sometime is there with him 🐶 He prefers to eat at the same time as us whenever he can
I could never leave the house without saying goodbye to my dog
Absolutely!!! 😃👍🏼
My pups surprisingly mature for just age, I'll give him a small biscuit before I go and he'll hop on the couch and happily munch away then fall asleep and chill until we get back
At what age we can leave them at house
@@rohini591 I recommend starting during it's early years so it doesnt develop seperation anxiety overtime, obviously don't just leave for several hours right off the bat, start off small by leaving for 5 minutes, then 10. Then 30. And so on till it's completely comfortable. And of course when you come back don't give it too much attention or the adredlind and happiness from you coming back makes them miss you more. My pups now an independent boy I can trust with being all alone all day of he has to!
Thx for the tip❤
Nice advice tho :)
im trying this tomorrow. my little fella is cool in the crate only if im home in the room...i def think this is going to work!
Good to know. 😊 ty.
Wow, thank you❤
What a great idea
I got my dogs as puppies, one at a time, and got them used to being left alone by slowly extending the amount of time I’d be gone. Before leaving I always take the dog outside to pee, check the water bowl, and I’m off. We don’t own a crate, but our house is dog-safe and clutter-free. We’ve never had a problem. It’s probably far more problematic with some older rescue dogs.
My dogs stay whereever they want in the house. They behave well, nothing gets torn etc. I feel bad enough, If I have to leave them for a while, I would be ashamed, If I put them in a cage furthermore.
We just got an 8 week old pup and I think this will help. I'm home or can bring her with me 99% of the time but I want her to be OK when I can't.
100% mate, see people thinking saying goodbyes just get the dog work up than leave are doing it 100% wrong.
My dog use the save what ever treat bone, chew stick etc I gave him, and when I came home he ge fethc it and then gobble it up. Such a good baby.
Yup, I've got lots of different ideas here! I've seen many folks instill anxiety into their dog........
I will definitely give it a try. Usually my dog only accepts me leaving when she can be part of a small pack. 30min leaving is fine. 3hrs is tough.
Good idea. Thank you.
Meatsicle! Genius! 🫶😹 Living on a ranch, mine are all outside, so different. I can't keep mine in the fence out here, my guys need to be able to roam tho😕 Ill keep looking thru your stuff, tysm for sharing!
Spot on!
This works for most dogs we had, except the dog I rescued two years ago, who waits by the door for us until we come back, even though she loves to eat she will not touch any food nor get up to drink any water until we are back
She has been abandoned three times that we know of so no wonder why she acts like that, but I would prefer that she tried to get into any cabinet with food in it and cause utter chaos if you were to leave any door open as our previous doggy
@Dee F ok I can see that. I can't help having better energy when I'm around them!!!! Next to my wife they are my best friends!
Wish more people actually did this rather than just take this information as"easier said than done"
It really is SO much healthier for your dog to treat them like a DOG and not a little baby with all these complex emotions
Hi Will,
Can you do videos addressing how to work with dogs that have been neglected, fearful of people, not eager to please, etc. Thanks!
Hi Will, how can I help my doggie that has thunderstorms phobia? He's ok with rain but not thunder. Please, please help! We're in Texas 😮💨 (lightning storm galore...).
By the way, we're using your methods for training our pups and we're all enjoying our walks, now. Little by little I'm getting results. 😊
@@marthamercado8702have you seen will's video on fireworks?
@@robinherrick2177 no
@@marthamercado8702 It might help with the loud noise sensitivity.
I think I unintentionally did this with my last dog by just throwing a treat into her bed before I left for anywhere when I knew I would be gone for most of the day.
And that way she knew not to make too much of a fuss when I had to go.
My dog hasn't a clue how to eat a treat, other than the snuffle mat, and that's all over in 5 seconds flat. He then looks at me accusingly 😂
