I love greek food! Except for the greek breakfast....(cup of coffee and a sigarette 😅). I could also eat that food every single day! That shop with all the salamis hanging from the roof is unreal! I would not be able to walk up straight in there (I am quite tall). Great video as always!

As a Greek Let me tell you that Miran is a a Greek store with Turkish or eastern cuisine ! Nobody in Greece eats pastourma I think there were better places to check with 100% Greek cuisine ! I think next time you should check them out

We eat pastourma and we love it. Miran actually is of Armenian origin. Armenians are masters of pastourma and soutzouki
Greek cuisine has influences from the east Jay , that is why is so rich. We embraced all the delicacies of other cultures and combined with ours we made a heavenly cuisine. We are a crossroad of civilization that brings Europe and Asia together. And with our fresh and perfect quality ingredients we can please every pallet. We have fish culture , meat culture and vegie culture. :) And ofc every place has its diverse local recipes that are amazing and takes 3 lifetimes to taste em all.

That silly millennial tour guide that you got is full of stereotypes judging by her self understanding of things. Of course not all Greeks have only coffee and cigarette for breakfast. Maybe she and thee village she comes from but definitely not the majority.
I'm Greek and I confirm that especially in cities that people rush to go to work people have a coffee on the go and a cigarette. You can see literally everyone carrying a cup of coffee in the streets. I would say that in her village people have a great breakfast every morning.
Ignore this Peter guy, the majority of Greeks (or a good 30-40%) does have usually just "coffee and cigarette for breakfast". Some people just like to pretend they're more upscale than others...

You guys didn't eat most of the really authentic Greek foods, like mousaka, baklava, NOT ANY SEAFOOD (which is a real shame, since Greece has the best seafood in the world!), you didn't drink the Greek house made red wine, or the ouzo...That guide of yours was not very savvy

koulouri is from thessaloniki and from thessaloniki it got to america when jews moved there and today its the bagel for americans.
the reason why it is round was that the vendors moved through the streets and had the koulouris on a stick , hence the hole.
ppl who believe that turks brought anything to the greek are ignorant of the historical timeline in this regions.
the turks couldnt bring anything to the greeks because the greeks had already empires in asia and middleeast , like the seleucid empire which spanned from palestine to afghanistan and india, or the bactrian empire and the ptolemaic empire in egypt for centuries before turks was even invented and came from mongolia to asia minor and balkans, therefore the greek already knew all the spices and brought them to europe and greece.
its the other way around, the turks learned and adopted everything from the greeks, the food , the spices and even the music, which was funny enough christian orthodox lithurgic music and was played in orthodox ceremonies and was part of the byzantine empire for centuries and when the turks conquered slowly byzantine lands they adopted food and music and today they pretty much have the same food and spices like the greek already had.
turks was used by the byzantines as mercenaries for many centuries, they was tough fighters from the steppes and was used as cavallary, so in the end the greek themselves teached them how to beat the greek armies and at some point the byzantine empire just started to crumble from inner and outer conflicts and at the end it fell to the turks which had now access to everything the greeks had kept in the libraries and written stuff.
Round breads appear all over Europe. Bagels are generally ackowledged to have originated in Poland. But hey, Thessaloniki's Kolouri could have made its way to Poland a few hundred years ago.
well that wouldnt come as a surprise because many jews from greece accompanied the ottoman armies on their invasion of europe and made business with the muslim and christian ppl and in 17th century the ottoman armies reached poland and because of a large jewish community in poland the polish jews may have learned the recipes from their fellow jews from greece which worked the koulouri and loukoumi busines almost exclusively in thessaloniki since early 1500ad.

The g is soft, not completely silent.
When in doubt, run the phrase through google translate, it gets the pronunciation pretty close to how a local would say it imo.

When Greece was under Bavarian (german) command by a Bavarian king who was like dictator Greeks asked for constitution. Today's parliament was the Kings palace those days. Imagine forcing people to live in your empire for 400-500 years and then acting all surprised when they were culturally influenced by this empire. Then being so dull as to call it theft.
Besides, having a word for something in Turkish doesn't automatically mean Turks invented it. lol. Many different cultures and ethnic groups were part of the Ottoman Empire, not just Turks. Get a grip.
