Bandsawn Nesting Boxes

- This is actually two videos in one! In the first part, Nick shows how to set up your band saw for precise resawing, keeping the re-sawn wooden slabs at a consistent thickness and the block from which you are cutting them square and true. The second part shows how to use this set-up to cut the parts to make "nesting" boxes -- a collection of matching boxes that fit or "nest" inside one another. These can all be cut from a single block of wood, or a block that you assemble from several wood species to create a decorative pattern like the wooden "ribbons" shown here. Watch the first part for some great tips on resawing, and the second for a simple project you can make from scraps or firewood.
The plan for the the nesting boxes -- including detailed instructions on setting up for resawing -- is available from our Workshop Companion General Store at workshopcompanionstore.com/pr...

And thank you so much for your time and interest!
The algorithm got me here. The content is so good, it feels bad watching this for free.
Sometimes the algorithm is benevolent.
Go buy something, then!
@@Tasarran I'll second that. We just happen to have a store...
Nick is the shop teacher I wish I had in junior high school and high school, providing his vast wealth of knowledge while never being condescending. Thank you to Nick, Travis, and Bella for making these videos, and I look forward to learning more from you in the coming year.
And a Happy New Year to you from us.
I discovered this channel by complete accident. This channel is fantastic for someone such as myself who has a great interest in Bench Joinery and look forward to every upload! You can curtainly tell he knows his stuff, the way he explains it so simply for anybody to understand. Thanks! :)
Most welcome.
You should check out Nick's books too. Packed full of some great info and plans
@@woodworkingandepoxy643 Thanks for the endorsement.
@@WorkshopCompanion absolutely! I tell everyone I can about your books lol
Yep I own his Weekend Projects Plus book from Rodale publishing.
Good lord you two make absolute top notch videos! Truly talented teachers, woodworkers, craftsmen, and content creators. In a class with Norm Abram, few, very few, can match what yall do. 👍🏻
Your dedication to metric exceeds basically all of your US based peers of less age. Thank you.
Most welcome, but meterminds make up two-thirds of our global audience. It would be irresponsible bordering on idiotic to ignore them.
I wish this guy had been my woodwork teacher at school. 🙂
I absolutely agree with you
Same he seems properly like one aswell.
I am not a woodworker or craftsman, this just popped onto my radar one day; and while I cannot see myself becoming a carpenter or woodworker, your entire persona and way of explaining makes these videos educational and fun. I applaud you, Sir. Keep up the great work and great content.
Thanks for the kind words.
Mr. Engler,
I want to say that I really appreciate you. The way you present very educational information and share your expertise is amazing. You are an inspiration to craftmen.
From the bottom of my heart thank you.
Your continuing use of both imperial and metric measurements is very much appreciated.
Most welcome -- but I would be ignoring a sizable portion of my audience if I used just one or the other.
What a wealth of knowledge, who makes amazing woodcraft, and has all his fingers! Incredible!
This is the best woodworking channel on RUclips
The author does like to from scratch, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
My dad was a wood and metalshop teacher for 38 years so growing up I used to go over to his classes whenever we had off(he taught in a different district so we'd usually have different days off for holidays and whatnot). I'm pushing 30 myself in a few years so I can't describe how nice it is to feel like I'm right back in his classes learning about tools or whatever they were doing that day. Been close to 20 years now and it feels like yesterday. So, thank you.
Most welcome.
Please show a detailed video about your entire workshop and how you set it up and planned it and why it is the way it is - I think your workshop is fantastic from a first impression. Thank you.
Doggo helping you sand is the best!
Since I found this woodworking channel, I can’t stop watching everything that comes out, sometimes even three or four times in a row. Learn a lot and keep more interesting discoveries here.
Thanks.
Your south park style character at the end had me in stitches 😂
By far the best bandsaw tuning video for resawing
I've always been bummed nobody I watched has had the same band saw as me, its an honor for the one to finally have my same exact saw to be you.
What kind is the band sawn? I’m looking for a good one.
ALWAYS worth my time.
Thanks.
Hi Nick.
I miss working with you.
Thought I'd make everyone jealous
There is much to say about perfection!!
Good to hear from you, Moose.
Im a learned carpenter but discovering this channel always opens my eyes to new ideas and your Presentation is just awesome. Also i love you providing imperial and metric units.
Best greetings from Germany
Thanks for the kind words.
I always get so excited when you release a new video!1 you truly are one of my very favorite RUclipsrs… your knowledge is endless.
Try to convince my wife of that...
😂
Not only does the man teach you how to build something, he teaches you how to prepare your tools so you _can_ build what he's showing you. This is an awesome video. I wonder if that would assuage my dominate pack rat gene, too?
Thanks for the kind words.
What a treat!
Nick and Travis and shop team, thank you!
Here's to a fantastic 2024. CHEERS!
Cheers back at ya!
I did a band saw box with multiple nesting. It was a much easier design because it wasn't square, but it is really funny to watch people attempt to opens the last core. And yes, I sanded and finished it! I guess we have a similar sense of humor! Great video!
Thanks.
This Danny DeVito/Jay Leno hybrid is the best source for old school knowledge. Nick, you are the best !
Anyone else without a dad get fantasy dads on RUclips? This guy's a contender.
I am very new to your channel and only found it because of a RUclips suggestion to watch and I absolutely love how you teach! I haven't done any wood working since high school woodshop about 30 years ago and the way you teach has really gotten me excited to pick up wood working once I can get a shop and tools. So in the mean time, I will be going over your older content to study and learn. I simply wanted to thank you for lighting this spark and thank you for breaking down the 'How to' of wood working for a complete novice like me!!
Thanks for the kind words...and good luck!
I've been watching woodworking videos for like 10 years but had never seen this channel until very recently. Buddy just drops in and blows me away with these incredibly high quality, entertaining and informative videos!
Thanks for saying.
As many woodworkers are turning to other videos, I find it refreshing to find you making this nested boxes. I large slab of oak that I could cut out a 6", 12" long and 6" wide. This project is going on my to do list right away. I'd love to make the glue up for both of my daughters. A while back, I tried to make a jewelry box and us dovetail joinery. I was using walnut and oak. Unfortunately the jig I made did not workout. This would be a great keepsake for both of them.
Thanks for sharing.
Nick - Thank you so very much on the great resawing tutorial for the ShopSmith bandsaw!! Now to get to work making stacking boxes!
Thank you for all your hard work this year. Truly you are a wise woodworker. Happy New Year!
Same to you and yours.
Thank you so much for all your videos but specially this one. I found it at the perfect time and I really dig your teaching style and how knowledgeable you are
Thanks for the kind words.
I love how you fully explain things
I just learned more about properly using my band saw than I have ever known before.
Absolutely wonderful video. I don't donany sort of wodworking myself, but I do use a portable bandsaw mounted on a hinge to cut metal components at my job. I keep blade alignment calibrated with the table measurements for fun.
Such a good breakdown!!! Love the visuals and great tips. THANK YOU!
Most welcome.
I love your dog. I know my boy wants to be all up into what ever dads doing. Great content thanks for your experience
Most welcome.
Probably the most amazing thing about this channel is that he still has all of his fingers.
Thank you, Nick and best my wishes for a great 2024 year.
Same to you!
Most welcome from Ohio.
Love the professional production quality, the clear explanation and the fact that measurements are all given in both the archaic imperial and the more understandable metric system. Thank you.
Most welcome.
Hey, Nick glad to see you back online.
I always enjoy watching a skilled professional work.
That intro on tuning the bandsaw for resawing is invaluable! Thank you very much for sharing your experience and knowledge.
Most welcome.
Wholeheartedly agree, although I wish it was its own video. I don't have a band saw yet, so I'm going to have to go digging to find it again when I have something to actually set up!
@@CLove511 Get the plan -- I wrote up the whole procedure in the first 4-5 pages of the "Nesting Boxes" plan.
Thank you, Nick! Just bought your book "Making Boxes and Chests" and thoroughly enjoying it. You're an amazing artisan and teacher.
Thanks for the kind words -- and the support.
keep up the good work man. I love your videos and I hope you and your family stay healthy
Thanks for the kind words.

Got to get back to the reindeer project
Most welcome, and good luck in the New Year.
Yet another fabulous tutorial
Thank you the best explanation I have so far seen.

Fantastic! Absolutely fantastic. Definitely going to try this for Christmas presents for next year. If I get started now I just might just get some done in time. 😄 It was so great to meet and chat with you at the Shopsmith 75th Anniversary celebration.
Thanks for saying.
I'm glad I've come across this channel because I have an interest in woodworking and the things it can be made into. I hope that one day I'll be able to try some of the things I've seen. So, thank you for explaining things in an easy to understand way and giving different options.
Most welcome.
A true artist at work.Beautiful boxes.Wishing you a wonderful 2024.

Thanks Nick
I have had some of his books for years, but only found his channel a few months ago.
Thank you for all your content, tips and tricks
Most welcome.
Always learn something from every video.
Always a joy, thank you!

Brilliant Nick.
I understood every word and sentence. Now I’ve got to get the paragraphs to work 😂. You are simply brilliant and I thank you for inviting me round. Compliments of the season to you and Bella. She’s lovely 🌞
And a happy new year to you from us.
Another wonderful video and, that puppy!
Even though I cannot remember squat, I truly enjoy your very educational videos. Having your shop dog nearby adds to the pleasure of watching. Keep up the good work and enjoy your New Year.
Happy New Year to you too.
Those boxes are a beautiful present in themselves.
Agreed. And the ribbon boxes don't even need to be wrapped -- they look like a present.
Thank you for your kind instruction, always a treat when you upload. A happy new year to you and your family.
Same to you and yours.
Thank you, Nick! Happy new year!

They turned out amazing 👍 Thanks for such an informative explanation on everything as well as setting up the bandsaw too

Love your presentation Sir!!!

You're a gem! Thank you!

Serious skills made to look simple. I know my limits and this was beyond them fast. Excellent video. AND Bella is an absolutely adorable dog 😍
Thanks for saying.
This video is so interesting and informative. Thank you.
Most welcome.
I saw one of your RUclips shorts and the quality of instructions you gave was commendable. I don't woodwork but I kind of had to check your channel after seeing how clearly and cleanly you convey information. I have a lot of respect for people who choose to learn to tech well . Being able to do a craft is one thing but teaching it takes learning a whole other skill set. The fact that People passionate about being able to enable others to learn what they are passionate about warms my heart.
Thanks for the kind words.
a very useful and interesting video, I really liked all the good things about you. Good luck
Thanks.
Ingenious! I always appreciate your videos. Also the instructions contained in the plans I have purchased have been very clear and concise.
Thanks for the kind words.
Those boxes are neat. Your assembly table and ShopSmith as a disk sander did a nice job of helping out on this project. The assembly table is definitely on my list of jigs to build. I also have ShopSmith envy, but probably don't have the space for one.
You can cut them down. There is no better sanding station than a Shopsmith with a belt sander attachment. Put the drill chuck on the belt sander PTO and you can add flutter sheets, drum sander, pneumatic drums, etc. as needed.
Thank you for the next movie and happy New year!!!
Most welcome and same to you.
The process is simple and diabolical at the same time. By the way my reindeer ended up looking like sad farm animals. Thanks for another great video. 🇦🇺👴🏻
Thanks for sharing. Great video.🙂🙂
Most welcome.
Thank you for making so well, i appreciate the many details and tips shared along the way and you help me try new skills
Most welcome.
Very very nice work as always 👌💯👍
Thanks.
Lol ur dog cracks me up with that arm. Great job
Thanks. I'll pass that on to Bella.
So excellent and information dense. Your videos are like a good meal for the mind.
Nice way to put it. Thanks.
Brilliant, exactly what I needed, thank you
Most welcome.
Good project, and great video!
Thanks.
I wish I could have learned as your apprentice. Darn gov service careers. 2nd best option has been buying your complete set of books. I read the ones relevant to each project before starting and it has been invaluable. Couldn't recommend them more. Those books and your visit to Mr. McCann's shop are my go tos when I am going to be changing anything in my garage shop layout or just want to learn more about this imperfectable craft. Thank you, Travis, and Bella for the knowledge and entertainment, may your new year be a great one!
Most welcome. And thank you for the kind words -- especially the one about reading the books.
Fantastic, Nick! Thanks a bunch for all the tips! 😃
I hope you had a fantastic Christmas!
Happy new year! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
The same to you and yours.
Great video! Thank you!
Most welcome.
Looks like you've got a good helper there! That is a nice project. Of course you make it look easy. Thanks and Happy New Year.
Same to you.
Fantastic video! Happy New Year to Nick, Bella & the rest of the crew! Enjoy! 👍👍💥💥🐶🐶
Same to you and yours.
Oooh thank you for reminding me I needed new bandsaw blades, another 50 quid on the credit card lol
incredible
Great project. Happy new year Nick.
And to you.
Beautiful. Informative. Just awesome. Im a beginner woodworker. Self taught with some help from youtube. I build custom shutters for people along with custom sofa tables. I have a band saw and i really appreciate the detailed instructions. I also have a table saw, compound miter saw, and various sanders. Still need a planer badly along with a bench sander or disk sander. By far the biggest challenge has been finding decent wood. I have to go to 3 different stores depending on how much stock they have just to find decent materials to work with. Most wood nowadays is shapes like wet noodles. But all in all my finished products look pretty damn good. Thanks for the video. Cheers from the mountains of eastern Tennessee.
Thanks for sharing. And Happy New Year from the rolling hills of Ohio.
Thanks. Right now these are completely out of my price range,
Thank you very much. I always enjoy your videos. Happy New Year! Say Hi to Bella.
Most welcome, from Bella and me.
Thank you so much, I have been wanting to purchase a saw blade, but I don’t know how to use one, I’m new to woodworking and love it, I feel I’m ready to try other ways of cutting wood to creat different things. And your videos have been a huge help for me. I am much more confident using my table saw, and use all your tips and tricks. Thank you again Happy New Year 🎉
The same to you.
Great video, thank you for sharing.
Most wecome.
