  • How To Identify Male and Female Cannabis Flowers
    Professor DeBacco
    Pre-Flowers
Growers should first look at the nodes (junction of leaves/branches and the stalks of the plant).
Pre-flowers begin to develop 4-6 weeks into the growing cycle at the nodes and during this time growers should be able to identify the gender of the plant as male or female.
These are immature flowers and will show the male or female morphology well before they are able to produce viable components for seed production.
Removing males at this time will help ensure no chance of accidental pollination will occur.
Male pre-flowers: Look for small pollen sacs
Female pre-flowers: Look for two stigmas (typically white)
    Female Plants
Females are the plants that will produce the cannabinoids in the greatest concentrations in the flowers.
If female plants receive pollen from male plants seeds will be produced which will drastically reduce cannabinoid production.
Cannabis is grown via sinsemilla (“seedless”) by removing male pollen producing plants to prevent seed production.
This allows for the cannabis plant to focus its energy on cannabinoid production instead of seeds.
Female plants will only be pollinated to produce seeds for breeding purposes.
    Male Plants
Male cannabis plants grow pollen sacs instead of buds and are often discarded to avoid female plants from being pollinated.
Males are important in the breeding process
Pollinating male plants shape, rate of growth, pest and mold resistance, and climate resilience can important for breeding purposes.
Male plants can also be used for:
Hemp fiber and in some cases concentrate production but concentration is much less than female plants.

@@DeBaccoUniversity Your video doesn't take into account Hermaphrodite plants which are not at all uncommon. Mostly they are plants that appear to be female for the 2 or 3 weeks of flowering and then they start to grow male pollen sacks. Some times it is just a few and other times its too many and the plant has to be destroyed to prevent the other females going into seed production. Maybe you could make anther video on that subject? I assure you that is is quite common when growing from seeds.

A plant can be showing its sex in one small hardly visible place and not be noticed. Plant shape can be a clue. Males are taller with more space between the sets of branches. My grandpa grew outdoors here in oregon and he would put a cardboard tube with one end taped shut to block light on a lower branch that wouldn't produce much. That branch goes into a flower cycle revealing the sex. He collected seeds from all kinds of people, from all kinds of places, with all kinds of tall tales about reefer and grew some serious kind. Usually sexing a plant is for propagation where it's imperative to control breeding but he did it to weed out the Males long before any pollination for a seedless crop giving the remaining plants more resources sooner.

Is there any other great information your grandpa left you concerning cannabis plants? I'm interested. This is a great tip. Thanks!!!

    • @jaymzgaetz2006
      @jaymzgaetz2006 8 месяцев назад +4

His knowledge could have filled books I'm sure. That tip was also featured in Ed Rosenthals "ask ed" column in high times. My grandpa's weed was legendary and i think it might have had something to do with his seed collection that he was sorting through. Every seed was either propogated unintentionally or with diabolical intention. The end result was always a suprise. But if you care about strains and their development you must keep breeding controlled. Also getting rid of unwanted males creates space and saves soil nutrients for the plants you want. The marijuana discussion has never been bigger but doesn't make sense according to most everything i learned about it growing up. I never grew it like my family but I had enough exposure to gain knowledge without trying. If there's something else i could suggest it would be curing techniques. He never had a dryer rack. He would hang his branches upside down in the dark damp crawlspace underneath the house. It seemed curious after stressing about mold at harvest. He even developed a strain that was early flowering to avoid mold that he called oregon outdoor. I asked him why he cured this way and he said that upside down branches with leaves on droop down over the flowers slowing the cure and make trimming the leaves easier. The stem attaching the leaf becomes a bright line that's easy to spot. Slowing the cure as much as possible without causing mold is real magic. Your flowers when cured will stick to walls like a booger. Cure as slow and damp as possible with the least amount of heat and light. If you use a jewelers lense and select flowers by how the trichome looks you change the levels of cbn and cbd. A more degraded trichome will have higher cbd than one picked at an optimal harvest time. Its why that crappy brick weed from Mexico would plant you in your chair. That in combination with the plant having seeds. When plants are with child all resources go to the child just like people. If the plant is not with child it becomes desperate for fertilization and makes itself stickier. If the plant is stressed it becomes more desperate and even stickier. When he smuggled his crop to my mom in California every year she'd sell out quick. There were always stories about how her weed wrecked someone. These tips are great for someone growing their own but may not be useful for large scale grows that are more concerned with volume than quality. Others tips were stressing the plant before harvest, only use natural methods, tying starts in a loop then untying and supporting their weight near harvest, removing big long branches that will produce one tiny piece of pot because it's a wasteof resources, try growing only tops or cola's, I could go on. Thanks for responding...I hope this information was useful to you.

High-level information combining the theoretical with the practical, and connecting the lab to the field. Thank you. I didn't want to have to consult a textbook, or go to a library, likely in vain due to their puritanical natures.
I hope we see more of these types of videos from real scientists and teachers in the future.
I hope other post-secondary educators become aware that an online lesson like this is the best and most democratic way to spread their knowledge to those who actually want it, instead of making specialized information strictly available for those interested that can afford it; or, for those who a) believe that their lessons are unimportant or boring, or b) they can learn later with on the job training, or c) are simply a vehicle to a career path.
Producing educational content like this for the world, free for the user and curated to a larger, more interested audience, while monetizing the scholar directly via ad revenue without a sea of intermediaries seems to me preferable for both student and teacher, as compared to, say, going a quarter million dollars in debt; or, working underappreciated for a pittance at an adult daycare existing to manufacture undergraduate degrees to a student body, 70% of whom are hungover, absent, or disinterested, while administrators who have nothing to do with academics funnel the educators' profits into their wallets and the athletics program.
I guess - long-windedly and likely for no-one - I just want to say thanks again for putting stuff like this out there, not only because it was very helpful, but because, perhaps, it may also embolden more and more with specialized information to do the same. If enough of an audience is built among enough educators, perhaps a free online university could be possible for the world, and become lucrative for its participants.

I used to do that out in the field back in the 80's. As soon as you see those male pre flowers yeet that plant out of the ground. The leaves of the male plant do contain a small amount of THC. Just dry the leaves and smoke them. That will give you something to smoke and a nice little buzz while waiting on the females to be ready for harvest.

Can you show us how to collect pollen? I'm thinking to save a branch with pollen sacks in a vase away from the females letting the flowers open and then using a brush with pollen to pollinate a female stem and then marking it with string. I'm sure the pollen should be sealed, and maybe refrigerated. I just want a few seeds for next year and not sure what I'm doing yet. I got the original plant seeds from a friend who cross-pollinated as a hobby so I can't get these plants from anyone else or they won't be the same. I save all kinds of seeds for my garden but these kinds of plants are different.

The first plant i ever grew was a seedling i found growing in the yard where some sailors had lived. The moved out and i had to clean their trailer(they trashed it). I noticed it growing, recognized it and transplanted it. Into a pot. It got about 3 1/2 feet tall and started developing pollen. I was disappointed. Went ahead and has ested it because it was getting harder to hide. I was careful to keep all the pollen with the leaves. Dried it and rolled 6 joints from it. I dmoked one and while eatching tv it looked like transmisdions from outerspace. Then i couldn't move out of my chair. Someone grabbed the rest of the joints i made. Damn.
