That up there is a 20 year vet, the Queen of Indie Rock, she's been on the grind since before some of you were born. And she looks beautiful still. Respect.
Screw it - she can wear her hair however the hell she wants. She can smoke as many cigs as she wants. She can crack bad jokes. I don't care. She's an amazing artist who continues to throw listeners for the best types of loops with each release.
Cigs aren't good for singing, that's all...if they damaged her in some way in which it prevented her from performing part of her art, it could really cripple her creatively. I mean, she'd still be able to play but she seems to be the type of artist that needs to 'get it out' by using her voice as well.
When my dad passed away in September last year I listened to John Coltranes Crescent over and over- I was just numb with grief but I tell you this beautiful music pulled me through
I love her so much. I unknowingly stood next to her backstage while Girls were performing at the Matador 21 show. She said "WHOOOOO!" in a high pitched voice after every song they performed. Anyway, I got myself kicked out by a security guard for helping myself to one the bands' many refreshments and she performed later that night. Such an angelic voice, apologizing to the crowd after nearly every lyric. Such a voice and a vision.
One admirable feature of Chan Marshall is she has never presented herself as any sort of ego or glamour. So pop comments about her looks or perceived eccentric behaviour are redundant. as for "what happened to her" , the answer is she made better and better music and you would be rolling shit uphill to find a more dynamic musical existence than her.
+RED SWORD OF THE ILLAWARRA Yes, she keeps on doing her thing despite battling some serious physical & mental issues I admire her & love her music. I am going to se her at a small local theatre in February, so I'm interested to see how she is nowadays. It's a small tour before she records her new album.
she is naturally amazing and cool , she suits the blonde hair cos she is so cool.... looks tired here, but still shining good interview for ameoba, i would say
she is a spun out artist, if your gonna make art you have to live on the edge. I bet when she is talking, her mind is racing and she finds it hard to put all she feels and thinks into words. I love this woman
When she pull out Cresent by Coltrane I fell in love with her....My favourite Trane album recorded the same time as A Love Supreme, it's so over looked and a finer album :)
The bananas were the best thing I've seen on What's In My Bag...what a great lady. Impeccable taste. "Lonnie's Lament", one of John Coltrane's finest. Two records, both brilliant....she's one of a kind.
Give her a break, not sure if she's an addict that was in recovery that may've relapsed. Or is just spazzy. Either way she is a great artist and don't judge unless you are perfect. Love you,Chan.
Great selections; was unaware of that John Coltrane song, thanks. The soundtrack & film "Elevator to the Gallows" music by Miles Davis is excellent for any interested. My crush on Chan has deepened...
Yes, Coltrane was a gentleman...and Chan Marshall a Lady... And such great artist she is! She is from my generation and we are good cats. Hey, that shirt is Icy, man! Like Jim Morrison once said: "pretty neat, pretty neat; pretty good, pretty good; alright"
Huge fan of CP and never knew until today that she did a What’s in my bag? Her choosing Crescent doesn’t surprise me at all, because she’s a true artist. That’s not a term we can use lightly these days. She should be 10 times bigger than Adele but the masses like safe music I suppose.
Audio Recordist/Assistant Editor Patrick Emswiler... Wonder if that's the same guy that was in a band in Boston years ago called the Sterlings. They were awesome.
I don't think she's on drugs at all, she's just naturally idiosyncratic and has anxiety problems. She was a drunk for a long time, but she went to rehab for it several years back. She's definitely not high though, she's just a bit eccentric.
was this around the time just after her problem with sleep paralysis? if so that could be an explanation to her physical state? that shit really takes the wind out of you
I had no idea I was about the same age as Chan. This might not be her most flattering look but some people get bored & like to change their look. She's interesting but she does seem on something. (Whatever, to each her own but generally people can keep recreational drug use in check.) And most smokers can get through an interview without smoking... **If she wears contact lenses...that could be why she's blinking a lot. Cigs bother your eyes more if you wear contacts. They feel dry & cause blinking.

If smoking is bad for your singing voice really depends on what kind of music you sing. For jazz or blues it could be actually better
actually its a pretty one joke hahaha or its just me.
The jokes were great.

I also was at the Matador 21 festival. The best three days of music I have ever experienced.
Woo
Such a unique person she is.
The Banana record is pretty dope. I had it this morning.
Heroin is my favorite

I think she looks amazing.

Love u
Truly eccentric
What a great selection she's something pure something driven to shine yeah
that was exciting, a whole 2 albums!
That Miles Davis release is underrated and amazing! One of my favourite jazz releases.
My favorite Miles for sure!
Pretty square though , the start of modal form , but nothing like his second and third quintet with chick corea Keith jarret and Dave Holland
Sweetest southern voice ever, great sense of humor, charming humble style, great soul, keep up the great work...
When she pull out Cresent by Coltrane I fell in love with her....My favourite Trane album recorded the same time as A Love Supreme, it's so over looked and a finer album :)
I always come back to this episode of WIMB. Love you, Chan. A true original.
She should've made a Velvet Underground joke when she pulled out the bananas.
+jaybone23 That's what I was waiting for to be honest.
I think it WAS a V.U joke, that's why she said "That wasn't funny...."
i thought it was a dildo joke
I just thought the same thing !
jaybone23 that's what I thought too
Bless her great taste and great heart
I love her she is beautiful and has a amazing voice
I love her idiosyncrasies. I hope she's doing well. Love ya Chan.
The bananas were the best thing I've seen on What's In My Bag...what a great lady. Impeccable taste. "Lonnie's Lament", one of John Coltrane's finest. Two records, both brilliant....she's one of a kind.
crushing since forever.
This is genius... Why aren't more people like her?
Because most people are afraid to be themselves
Because they know better.
shes my favourite person ever
Give her a break, not sure if she's an addict that was in recovery that may've relapsed. Or is just spazzy. Either way she is a great artist and don't judge unless you are perfect. Love you,Chan.
She's such a sweet girl. She'll never be old in my eyes.
I feel you, Chan - everything I come to love they stop making! Gotta get it in triplicate just to be safe. 🖤
Her taste in music is real good. Classy.
Chan is has such an awesome spirit about her. Love this woman and her immeasurable talents. More power (pun intended lol) to you Chan
She's so pretty and ageless!
one of the greatest videos ever
Great selections; was unaware of that John Coltrane song, thanks. The soundtrack & film "Elevator to the Gallows" music by Miles Davis is excellent for any interested. My crush on Chan has deepened...
I love Cat Power so much. Seriously people stop commenting on her mental health, that's her personal business.
Opened up for Hera few times back in the day in Atlanta ...great artist
her moment with lucia at the end was so heart breaking! it is hard to ease back into everything when your life changes dramatically like that.
I wanna give her a hug.
I love Cat Power.
What a character, she's great.
I love the way her mind works..
RIP Ahmad Jamal, the beautiful piano you hear on Crescent
Nice to see Coltrane on so many rawk and indie list.
Chan Marshall pulls out Trane.... I didn't know I could love her any more... !!!
She loves Elevator to the Gallows by Miles Davis. She will always be beautiful for that.
amazing...my favourite music of miles davis...
Huge fan of CP and never knew until today that she did a What’s in my bag? Her choosing Crescent doesn’t surprise me at all, because she’s a true artist. That’s not a term we can use lightly these days. She should be 10 times bigger than Adele but the masses like safe music I suppose.
My bad thanks for clearing it up for him. Easily my favourite album by her. Rockets is a great track.
Yeah, "Elevator to the Gallows" with Jeanne Moreau. You might want to check that out.
Couldn't have picked better albums than those
Hey, she's smoking a cigarette...INSIDE! I'm in love!
+Mozart FX Yeah, that's disgusting.
Audio Recordist/Assistant Editor Patrick Emswiler... Wonder if that's the same guy that was in a band in Boston years ago called the Sterlings. They were awesome.
The goat shirt love that!!!!
That 'the Goat and the Occasional Others' shirt. Fucking nice.
+Bender Rodrigues came down just to find a comment like this
LOVIN HER SOUTHERN ACCENT
This woman here is 41. Forty fucking one years old. How does that work? Most rockstars look 41 at 25, not the other way around.
She looks 60 now.
The Billy Idol gag was petty good.
I dunno, she's as pretty as ever, in my opinion.
She's cool !
Shes so beautifulllllll.
damn-killin' it! even Elevator to the Gallows soundtrack!!
oh god i could listen to her speak french all day
man, awesome awesome picks!
These are some good picks. Got a lot of time for those records.
Thank you for your brilliant comment!
chan is beautiful and i love her.
whats w/everyone commenting on her smoking & hair...who cares
Because generally speaking, people are superficial retards.
Ray Anders THANK YOU, RAY.
but oml her music is soooo good
In answer to the question, I suppose everyone commenting?
Love this woman!

She's funny. Love this person.
I love you so much, Chan *hug*
now SHE is RAD
she's a musician
Chan has some good taste in music
I love her
I hear you. But I think she's being compassionate ,))))
She can, SHE has talent ,))
love you chan
This lady can talk about music. Too bad it's so short.
I think Coltrane was from Philadelphia. But CP is spot on with that album. Crescent is great.
North Carolina
I've been listening to her for a long time and didn't notice, actually; did she?
i understand her so much. we have the same psychological issues for sure. its not the drugs.
me too, it isnt drugs it's from traumatic childhoods with erratic, emotionally immature parents.
Moon Pix would be in my bag.
......... yes
Oh Chan...when are you going to run away with me and just become the jazzer you have always wanted to be?
bebop lives Chan...
...much love.
Love Chan XO!
I hope you're feeling better.
I don't think she's on drugs, just delightfully weird!
Josh Richardson then you've never been around a junkie before. She definitely "acts like" one. I hope she's not. But, the signs are fairly evident
she seems like such an interesting person... beautiful X
She's so cute. Wish she never changed her hair, but what are you going to do.
lol at the goat and the occasional others shirt they opened for her in like 2011 i think
Video not available in my country? USA? This is from Amoeba right?
I think its cool she picked up own album
So, were the bananas at the beginning a reference to the Velvet Underground album cover?
Thats what i thought
I hope so the Velvets first is my all time favourite lp.
I don't think she's on drugs at all, she's just naturally idiosyncratic and has anxiety problems. She was a drunk for a long time, but she went to rehab for it several years back. She's definitely not high though, she's just a bit eccentric.
"Lonnie's Lament" is a transformative piece on "Crescent".
I’m pulling out my copy of crescent right after this...
was this around the time just after her problem with sleep paralysis? if so that could be an explanation to her physical state? that shit really takes the wind out of you
True !
