Let's Talk About The (Countless) Shipping Controversies

  • Shipping has changed from how it was in the past. Way back when you'd just say whatever character you love and that'd be the end of it. But now it feels like saying that might very well enter you into a war. And even if you don't pay attention to the space, you've probably heard about the all of the controverises that have come from it. Either debates on if a ship is morally correct or people doing anything they can to make the pairing they love canon. For better or for worse, to many this is what shipping looks like nowadays.

    the whole "like a brother/sister to me" attributed to being incest is crazy to me because i feel like the younger generation doesn't understood the deeper nuances to relationships as if they themselves don't have one or experience emotional changes within one.
    they don't understand that it's a way to establish a boundary but also that the other person doesn't have to agree to it. that's what makes fiction fun to explore. you can explore those nuances.

    I think one perspective I would like to add to the discourse about it is I don’t really think it has anything to do with morals at all. There’s a concept in psychology called “operant conditioning” which states that a behavior will be more likely repeated when its connected with a reinforcer. So viewing the question of why “shipping wars are so common” through lens, I see it more of the question of “what psychological reinforcers are at play that are motivating the repeating of the behavior”. And these reinforcers can come in all different forms. Like someone might be instigating a flame war because the fact that someone has a different view on a work provokes a sense of anxiety and by going on the offensive it helps reduce that anxiety. Or another might be swept up in the rush of feeling like they are on a morally righteous crusade. Or another might want to see the ship made canon and believe that if they are loud enough then the creators might end up making it canon. Ultimately this behavior isn’t anything new in my eyes from crazy sports fans to religious zealots. The best thing that one can do in these circumstances is to avoid being swept up into that cycle. And if you want to create any content for a ship make sure to do so under a burner account and don’t engage with anyone regardless of what they say positive or negative. I don’t know if this helpful or not because its less of a solution and more of just a survival strategy that it would be ideal to not need to do. Admittedly there’s a reason why a lot of actual writers use pseudonyms, wear masks for public conferences or just try to maintain as much of a distance with the fans as possible. Its just disappointing to see so much waste of energy being put into this and how many people have been hurt emotionally and physically

    • @aereonexapprentice7205
      @aereonexapprentice7205 19 дней назад +6

      I think this is not just a mere survival strategy but an attrition solution. The entire thingamajig is a negative feedback loop, cutting the existence of opposition by just removing yourself from the discourse will result in the rowdy party having no one to fight against, cutting out those who as you say gets anxiety when the thing they like gets "attacked" or those who goes on a crusade expecting to win cause yeah they have nobody to fight against. Hell it's not even exclusive to zealots or fervent people, just simple venting where people are not in the right headspace to engage in a discussion can be defused this way too.

    I wish the popular ship wars didn't completely tarnish the fun of shipping. Personally, I'm not on that side of things and stick to smaller rarepairs - I've met some of the nicest and most creative people in these circles. We're all too busy grasping at straws in order to find new inspiration for a fanfic/artwork/edit to even bother with infighting or fighting with other ships. It's fun, I'd reccomend people to start imagining their favorite characters hold hands or just be friends, even if they've never even met before.
    Edit: also thank you for trying to be objective, it's nice to see someone who sets the facts straight and let us digest the information. Personally I'm on the side "Hey let's maybe not wish harm on someone else, but I'm also staying 1 kilometer away from that weird stuff". Great video

    Funny to see this posted just after a friend and I had a long conversation about heterophobia/ biphobia in fandoms and how spiteful that can get (looking at you, anime/ JRPG and HoYoverse fans). So good timing on top of being as well put together as ever, thanks!

    • @InfinitySevens
      @InfinitySevens 18 дней назад +45

      NGL "heterophobia" is something that I've only ever seen happen in the most chronically online of spaces, but I get biphobia which does tend to happen quite a bit beyond just fandom spaces. There's also just standard homophobia that I sometimes see cropping up in "shippers vs gooners" discourse (especially if it involves a wlw pairing).

    • @hanchengjun275
      @hanchengjun275 18 дней назад +11

      Heterophobia is only a thing on the most basement dwellers of fandoms. Shipping shouldn't be this serious as it entirely made up unless the source media makes it canon.

    • @PinkAgaricus
      @PinkAgaricus 18 дней назад

      @hanchengjun275 I feel like the writer/director making them canon thing came true (was probably hinted at a lot) with the main cast of Kingdom Hearts. In this case it was Nomura.
      Though Roxas/Xion and Riku/Namine at the very end of KH3 surprised the Roxas/Namine people. I think Roxas/Xion was implied but people were probably putting Roxas and Namine together because of Sora and Kairi being their somebodies and the fact they're both blonde. I feel like those who made Roxas and Namine into a ship didn't have a DS and play KHDays (or watched the story in the repeatedly released 1.5 remaster on multiple systems) to get Roxas and Xion's backstory as a pair.

    • @Latency345
      @Latency345 17 дней назад +11

      Heterophobia isn’t really the same as the homophobia in fandoms. Heterophobia is more a result of being too terminally online. Homophobia on the other hand is a result of deep issues in our society that is still prevalent as of today.

    @crystaloaths_ellie9538 19 дней назад +44

    To me the scariest part is that a lot of people engaging in such aren't minors anymore. They're actual adults, many of which have actual jobs and are functional members of society.
    If it's a kid who doesn't yet grasp the concept of people having different opinions and preferences and takes it as a personal attack, I can find it a lot more understandable. Still wrong, but understandable.
    But an adult who is investing resources into harassing other people and actively putting their lives in danger is very ??????? Like, what are we doing here??
    I myself enjoy shipping a lot, have ships I love and ships I hate ( -even had to go on a minor blocking/muting spree after Canto 7 to get a certain ship off my feed oops- ), but the thought of going out of my way to bully artists and writers, let alone HURT them is insane.
    What happened to live and let live (assuming nothing illegal/harmful is being done)?

    This is classic tribalism, but the subject matter is about pairings of fictional characters. It's even worse because online basement dwellers are constantly stuck in echo chambers and have little irl guidance, with Internet anonymity to further dehumanise opponents.

    Having been deep in the trenches witnessing the lengths the most vocal shippers have gone to, a part of me gets being attached to a particular character pairing you like whether its based on evidence in the show/game or just fanfics you've seen to convince you of the connections. The problem though is when these clashing ideals are pitted against one another with the veil of anonymity the Internet provides, it enables people to let out their worst behaviors and feel they can get away with it because they think people will be in their corner and that they are justified. Like with how there were other big incidents with Voltron; for example the time a Klance shipper took pictures of behind the scenes sketches and plot beats hostage unless the studio made Klance canon to the show.
    I find also bringing up Genshin funny as Hoyoverse shippers can definitely be up there in terms of being notorious mostly for how some have gotten set off by people actively looking to make them mad or in cases wherein the ship in question makes people say stupid things and be hypocritical. Two cases that come to my mind with this are the time Tectone proceeded to "own the shippers" by making rage bait posts against Robin from HSR targeted at shippers who liked the head-canon of her being a lesbian, leading to many shippers attacking him and him reaping the benefits of their outrage, while the other is the Mina Aoyama micro drama where in she tanked some credibility for arguing that Firefly's character was "being destroyed for waifu bait" when in reality the reason she said that was because all the trailers promoted and implied her having relations to Caelus the Male Trailblazer instead of Stelle the female one.
    Arguably though the worst case I've ever seen for shippers outside of Voltron and prob the Hoyo games is RWBY as anyone who has briefly touched the series can attest that when it came to shippers, there were countless wars held between the main pairings of the 4 main girls. Most notorious being ofc the Bumblebee ship of Yang and Blake that was fed by Rooster Teeth themselves but that is a can of worms for another time.

    You know being part of Mha fandom, I was already used to this type of shit lmao
    Every now and then every BIG fandom will have a shipping war for no reason (it's even worst if it's not canon because On gods name, why would you fight about Ships if it's not canon in the first place 💀)
    Edit: also, to asnwer your question, *NO*
    You don't need to kill an real person over an fictional ship
    Yes you can judge them for being weird with the ship they like and making art for but K*lling or hurting them is not right at all
    One last edit before I leave: Great Video dude, I been while since I saw you post (it hadn't been too long lol)
    I'm surprise you didn't talk about Genshin impact when it comes to ship wars because Holy that's whole trash fire talk over there but like I say Great video dude, I can't wait for the next one (also, Hope you stream the Limbus event next week)

  • @GrindyVine
    @GrindyVine 19 дней назад +34

    In the end, these types of hyper obsessive lunatics is what creates the toxicity of the ship. They often forget that ship is not always canon, often it'll be a part of so many random ships that exists and when the god (author) decided which relationship is canon, they can't do anything to stop it. Fandom exists as it's own play field, if you on field A, don't complained on field B thay it's not like their field. It's these types of people that acted as if they're the rightful one, not noticing what they did only caused more harms on the fanbase. Because anonymity is a dangerous power that we had, the power for not having real world consequences for what did online.
    Ps:Also it would be interesting to see if Tsunul uploaded a video about Gacha games for each demographics like what on a fanfic of his, while not a ship, it's pretty well made plot heavy story. And mostly because, like the stigma of ships, i believe not ALL gacha games has to focused on male gooner demographics.

Maybe it was just me on a bad english day but i had to rewatch the part talkin about the voice actor who apologised and the dude recording the kid multiple times and i still dont think i understood well what you said there. Another problem i find with the video is that the charity thing kinda dived outside of the point, that one felt more about charity and the nature of the money in it, and as much as i am actively against the violence on individuals i think you can still dont feel okay about what someone enjoys and then it becomes the dilemma of "would you take money from a bad person".

    Maybe a small paragraph to those who have low attention spans (joke)
    I honestly don't care what people ship and I never have I think another big problem is how readily available everything is online. I support all kinds of shipping but I don't have to like it myself, two things can be true at once.
    Idk how to word this part but people need more supervision on the internet because on BOTH sides of this there are bad people.
    Are there potentially people who use their ships to do real life harm? Yes. Are there also people who hate other ships that try to groom and recruit others into that extreme mindset and pass themselves off as safe? Also yes.
    Most people wouldn't go into a bookstore, go to the adult section and complain there are adult books there with adult themes no matter how extreme the kink is. The assumption is that you are an adult and you know how to engage with it. But since everything is online it's less physically taxing and embarrassing because you're not in public and it's much easier to create echo chambers.
    Even as a child I understood these things. I was a kid and a couple times I stumbled on explicit things sometimes involving 'immoral' ships but I never really cared because they were all just designs and characters to me. As a child who didn't even have internet (I would have to see things with adults) I shipped Itachi x Sasuke. Did I know they were brothers? Yes. But I liked the dynamic back then and I didn't really think beyond 'Oh these are just characters'. I also knew not to complain in places that I put myself into. Like even my family, I grew up around some anime fans and back then some of them liked characters that would be 'underage' but were married, dating etc to actual women, so in my mind there is not a close connection to fiction and reality. At some point in my childhood I went through an extremely rough patch mentally and I was drawing gore and death and writing 'illegal' stuff but even back then I knew that 1) it was not real i wasnt harming anyone and 2) i was not going to perpetuate these things
    My mind was not "oh i drew and wrote this so i must want to hurt people" nor was it "im a potential murderer so im drawing/writing this" it just was. Even when i got better and without outside (internet) influence i still did it for enjoyment and i knew it was harmless.
    If someone does do something it's not because of the existence of a fictional character, something is already wrong with them mentally and has nothing to do with lines and colors. I think and always have thought that exploring things through fiction is good and I also remember as a kid I saw this age gap thing. Mind you at this time I knew what age gap was and why it was harmful in real life, but when I read it I DIDNT CARE BECAUSE IT WASNT REAL. I knew what I picked up (mostly) and I saw it was age gap and I continued to read it. So to me I don't understand anything on why people get so up in arms about this. I could honestly go on about it for a while but it just baffles me.
    As long as it's fictional i dont care how far it goes because at the end of the day that's all it is and if someone does have some mental health issues or something then that's something they need to sort out in their real life. As long as nobody is hurt irl I genuinely do not care.

    The whole "shippers vs gooners" phenomenon also tends to overlap with misogyny and/or homophobia in places since I've seen this sort of thing happen a lot with more recent wlw pairings in Hoyo game fandoms (y'know, since finding yuribait in a Hoyo game is like finding water in the ocean).
    Also, I think the whole shitshow surrounding the Kaeluc ship in Genshin Impact could have been worth talking about since it's definitely a case of both values dissonance and shoddy localization, but E made an entire feature-length video about it so...

    Personally, I don't think any 'ship' makes someone deserving of threats. The content of said shipping __work__ does complicate things. But given that these characters are fictional you can essentially remove anything potentially negative before putting them in a ship with another character and in my opinion be fine.
    But ptting something like accusations towards real people and/or their personal information, or encouraging negative behavior in an explicit 'do this to others/yourself' is where things do start to become an issue.

    Honestly had this little theory for a long time since 2020, but with 2025 jokingly seemingly like a repeat of that, ill just say
    There has definitely been a change in the mental fortitude or overall behavior of most people because of how the pandemic forced us to essentially stay online for a long period of time, and we never recovered from it even 5 years later. There were always incidents before that but they weren't as abundant and widespread as the shit we see now, like how people would get too attached to fictional characters and treat them as real people, personas played off by content creators being used to project fantasies, or just speak on a controversial/political topic in fictional media and soon everything gets taken so seriously that death threats and other forms of harassment casually get thrown around. Because being terminally online and attaching themselves to fictional media was almost a norm in that point in some of those people's lives to keep whatever sanity they had left, and not many people had the real strength to fight off that decay with their lowering morality because there wasn't a "reason" to if you couldn't confront people IRL at that time for it to matter. Shipping was just another unfortunate form of that attachment that people used to keep themselves either "entertained" or "engaged" and it was their form of trying to stay sane during those pandemic days. This was kinda how shit like the DreamSMP and Genshin's popularity skyrocketed along with the actually normal community interactions gathered from all the people staying inside. Shipping was so damn abundant in those communities and many others that it might have altered the perception of how people viewed others online, generalizations and stereotypes just run rampant and now here we, it all leads to this video, trying to understand where it went wrong, and the current state of this as part of internet culture.

    Accounting that this is like, 5th video you made on the same topic, which can be boiled down to "people got too into something and start threatening/killing eachother over this", i really don't think this format is working for anything other than "Top 10 death threats in THIS fandom".
    The discussion always devolves to "How terrible they are, don't be like this guys :)", which, while is fine, doesn't really add anything to discussion. As someone already commented, this behaviour isn't anything new, it's the same sport fans and religious zealots of the "past", just with Tumblr coating, and require the same treatment. Not "Oh the humanity, how could this happen, this is so terrible" but "Oh, mentally unwell people are fighting with eachother, again." For the same reason, i don't think this constant somber tone is fit for that as well, it's the same as starting every video with "Today, a kitten have passed away somewhere, and this is how gaming industry lead to this." Feels like a little overreacting, which in return dulls down the emotions for something more important. You yourself say "How could they do this over pixels on the screen", and then overblow the importance of the same thing. What I'm trying to say is, chill out, 10 year old Billy screaming kys in the mic wont kill you, and 40y year old psychopath will dox you or someone else anyway, if not for waifus and shipping, then for you disagreeing with his flat earth theory. Encourageing people to find solutions for that is better than painting the symptoms as a sickness itself. Yes, it's more difficult and probably out of scope for gacha RUclipsr, but nobody said that handling such big social topics should be easy. So i guess then, the idea is not to waste time on them, unless you make them into entertainment? Dunno

    I would really like to see a more logical view to be brought up more for this topic
    It’s fiction right? So any line you draw will be slippery as hell. The only real solution is to not draw a line at all. Like I can’t even put into words what I’m thinking would be ‘disgusting’ or ‘terrible’ enough to get any inkling out of me that It should be ‘stopped’ let alone take any action myself lol. Things like shipping underaged or incest things I could not care less about because I have no empathy for fictional characters. If people want to say ‘your bad if you like them cuz you’ll do it irl’ I wonder what they would say when they see me play hatred or engage in any other media I know of which are way worse that the topics they hate lol. It’s all emotional, therefore stupid. Through experience any time you get emotional is the moment everything goes down the drain. Just follow logic
    -why are things bad? Because it harms ppl
    -why just because harming ppl? Because dictating bad based on ANY other criteria becomes way too subjective to where if it were logical again it would label EVERYTHING bad.
    -what is fiction? A medium that doesn’t exist in the real world
    -if it does not exist, therefore it cannot harm
    -if it cannot harm, fiction cannot be bad
    This is how I think at least. NO fiction cannot be bad, there it is ALL allowed. Only bad things are not allowed. I don’t even get why people care if something is ‘weird’ because logically the only thing you should care about is BAD and NOT ‘weird’ or anything else that ISNT BAD specifically. I always wish to use the most EXTREME examples I can conjure to demonstrate this, because the logical principle has no exceptions. If anybody says that something shouldn’t be done, they would have to figure out what about the principal is not true, otherwise the conclusion remains true instead.
    There really is no line at all. Because the only notion that has no contradiction is that in fiction, no thing is able to be disallowed. Really, feel free to give me the worst example you can imagine for fictional thing, it MUST be allowed, or else the logic fails and that’s worse than anything.
    So yeah that’s what I think.

    kid/adult ship? straight ship? queer ship? incest ship? it doesn't matter, because it is FICTION, if you find some of these contents morally disgusting then there's a block/mute button in almost any social media you are allowed to use, there is no point in wasting your time hating and threatening to harm someone over what effectively is just ink on paper/pixels on a screen
