I wish he finds what makes him happy or what makes him whole because, I say it honestly, he sounds like someone who would hang up himself despite of all his success.
    I have met many people like that.

      @aaronb3940 4 года назад +25

      I think you should take more care to not conflate the meaning of a depressed mood with Major Depressive Disorder. I really feel like making these assertions without any evidence or qualification (I’m guessing you don’t have either of these?) only makes complicated issues more complicated. It also clouds the general public’s understanding of a problem that benefits from the compassion of said public. Compassion comes from understanding.
      In my opinion there is a big difference between “he sounds like he is having a hard time” vs “…he may have been suffering a strong depression for who knows many time.” The first suggests something common that we all go through that may just need to talk to family and friends, it doesn’t have a major impact of day to day productivity, it doesn’t impact your relationships or ability to hold down a job. The second is implying a more serious problem that warrants clinical intervention as it DOES impact the things just mentioned. To further understand the difference, you can look up the criteria for “Major Depressive Disorder” in the DSM-5.
      I am guilty of this as well but as a society with compassion for each other, we should try not to casually use terms like "dyslexic moment", "I'm OCD about..." or suggest that someone is suffering from strong depression without knowing details of the persons experience.
      It diminishes the struggle of those who suffer from these ailments long term that are often debilitating. I know this is unlikely your intention, but I felt it worth typing up these thoughts to give you another perspective to consider (and to reinforce in myself) that we shouldn’t casually be using these clinical terms to describe someone who may or may not be suffering from them.
      Something else to consider...I’m definitely not an expert but in my experience (watching Sigur Ros and Bjork interviews, spending some time in Holland) the speech cadence of Scandinavians is often slower and more monotone than usual, if like me, you’re used to watching American/Western media. I know this is something associated with someone who has a depressed mood but again one shouldn’t conflate this with someone suffering a long-term mental disorder. It might just be a cultural difference :)

      I'm falling to see the connection with real life, though. What lessons do games actually teach you about struggles of real life? How do you apply "don't pick CK when ES is picked" to real life? That's a cool sounding phrase, but does it get farther than that?

I question if he even enjoyed DotA as a game anymore for his last few years and the only thing keeping him playing was how OG functioned as a team and as a group of friends. And, in the end, the true lesson: the most important things are the immaterial things - the experiences and the feelings. Holy shit these guys are just unreal. I've been grinding and grinding from 2kmmr until I reached my goal 6kmmr, which what most people considered to be really good at playing dota, but I suddenly felt empty after those 4 years. I never went back on playing dota, though I still watch them on youtube like once a month. I'm no professional or obviously nearly the skill of jerax but I can tell you based on what I've experience that after acheiving and acheiving similar goals (like I want to be 3k then 4k then 5k then 6k) you'll feel mixed and unexplainable emotions/feelings empty,sad,thankful,happy, bored and continuously being unsatisfied. Haven't opened my steam account and played dota 2 for 2 years and 1 month now and I'm happy in life, I can do more things rather than wasting my time on playing but that's just for me, we all are different anyway I just shared my story since I felt some similarities in Jesse's reason why he left Pro dota 2.

I believe he has reached a point where he had given so much to this game and have left pondering on whats next. A game is a game and coming from him, he may have lost the flame he once had. Being this humble just made us more of a fan of JerAx than Dota. Much love and respect for you bro and I hope you find the answer that you've been looking for.
