I recently took a few days off and travelled down to Lynmouth on the Devon Coast. Lately I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be authentically yourself in your photography, or filmmaking, or whatever your creative pursuits, so on top of taking photographs I decided to make a film with some of these thoughts.
I hope it challenges you to be brave enough to be yourself in your own work.

No. Don't quit. These are truth tutorials. I'm almost 70 years old and been photographing for 45 years of it and have been bombarded with images, tips, tricks and information for most of it. You truly inspire me where very few have. And you pictures are quietly wonderful too.
💕
I just spit my coffee all over my screen at the "WPHATS UPP" moment. Love your channel man. Thank you!
😄😄
And our 'Sha...bang' might be more restrained but it is how we are.
These videos are absolutely precious! In a very saturated market with reviews, unboxing, tutorials etc I LOVE to see something deeper and you achieved that here Sean. I'm actually playing around with an idea to a series going this "philosophical" road too, so it's very nice to see someone else also trying out this format :)
Mads.. I would love to see this kind of content from you.. I follow you continually as well as sean. I get some like the How too stuff. but it's these types of vids, that really resonate with people.
Mads' are actually pretty good, but at times, you talked too fast and too much. I think you need to write first what you want to say so you will not talk unnecessary thing. It is very annoying to watch substanceless videos. But, again, Mads does have the ability.
Mads Peter Iversen I actually enjoy these better than his tutorial videos.
I agree with you 600%!!! This is two years old and only now I’m finding out about Sean. This is very inspirational for all of us who are in this creative journey. This is truly dope
@@kennymccannYT both mate!!
I never leave comments on youtube videos but I've been enjoying your content so much that I just had to. I'm glad you're being you, please never stop.
Thanks mate:)
I am sure you will keep making these videos Sean, but if it helps, these are the ones that really make a difference to people long term. They inspire and provoke the thoughts needed to improve or keep on creating work regardless of the reception from others etc. I appreciate the words and thoughts you provide in these passionate videos, I think it covers a lot of what I think myself regarding photography.
Thanks Andy
Totally agree! I get so much more from these clips than I do from the tutorial-type videos that proliferate the web.
I wanted to express that feeling you described right above, but I think you just did it in an amazing way so there is nothing to comment; you did it for me, for all of us that love photografphy.
This is so beautiful and stunning. The story is interesting and I am sharing!
"I'm naturally an introvert and so many youtubers are extroverts." That's what I was just thinking! I'm an introvert (INFJ specifically) so, your work inspires me.
I’m also an INFJ:)
@@seantuck Wow that's amazing. So that's why I feel familiarity. That's the coolest thing I heard today. Thanks Sean!
@@jeizschey ISTJs like Sean's approach and content too :)
Found this reply and got curious which types do I belong to. Believe it or not, it appears that I'm also an INFJ.
Yes J ... I hear that from a fellow INFJ
I love your work, but more than that, I love your being. Thanks for being who you are.
This is one of the most stunning compliments we could wish to receive.
Shreya Gadepalli well said!!
Sean; While I enjoy the technical and how to video's these with a more philosophical leaning are the reasons I watch your channel.
Keep making this kind of content and be assured it is valued.
I can't tell you how much I love the fact your channel is not about the technical stuff but rather the philosophical, background thoughts.
Keep it up, keep making this little gems.
Thanks!
By the way, the shots in this video are pure butter ;).
When introvert people start talking, I listen. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! And please, don't stop making these kinds of videos
I've watched more than 40 videos about photography today and yours is the one that helped me the most - or at least made me feel the best.
Thank you for what you do, Sean
Stay authentic, keep going.
Me too.
"All art completes its cycle when it is appreciated by someone else"....wow. If I have a mantra going forward from today for my photography this is it.
Those Peter McKinnon and Peter Hurley impressions 👌 😂
wabbit688
I see I wasn't the only one who who caught that. 😂
maf36 😉
They were spot on! I can't stop laughing hahaha
The funniest part is that I literally just came from a Peter McKinnon video right before this one. :-)
How the H does Peter McKinnon have 806k subscribers???
Please don't stop...I need your voice...it's the voice in my head
Man, I am just so glad I found your channel a few nights ago. I dream of being able to speak my mind as clearly and fluently as you do. My inner monologue is very similar to the things you say, but I'd never be able to get the words out correctly or as smoothly as you do.
Your channel is truly a gem.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and mindset.
Brendan Miranda couldn't have said it better myself!
Have you ever heard of the book The War of Art? You should check it out. :)
2 years after you made this video; I am so happy you didn’t lost your way. I love your approach about talking about photography. After all, we all have different cameras, different styles and different things we want to photograph. Many of us watching are between beginners and professional photographers. We are using our camera to express not only creativity but also our feelings too.
"All art completes its cycle when it's appreciated by someone else."
Profound. Inspiring.
I have learned that to be happy in photography, as in life, listen to your heart. If it makes YOU happy and fulfilled, nothing else matters. Artistic success is relative and cannot be measured.
I dont have much access to the internet but whenever I can get to youtube, I wound go and actually download your content and listen and watch them everyday. Need more people like you on youtbe, really inspiring. Thank you
Please be yourself, that is why I enjoy your channel.
These sort of videos are much more important than technique stuff. Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him to fish and he eats for life. This is great stuff Sean. I hope you keep doing it.
Sean, you're the first youtuber I turned on notifications for. And it's for this exact type of content :)
wow, this is such a great comment to read
Please don’t ever stop producing this sort of videos 🙌 we need you to be you 🙌
Yes, indeed
Brilliant and spot on in your message as per usual, Sean. Looks like you had a great time and weather in Devon :-)
Yeah I got lucky:) Beautiful corner of the country.
There is nothing that lasts more through time than simplicity. Thanks for your content.
The Peter Mckinnon shoutout lol
I just paused the video and laughed for a full 10 seconds there XD
I searched for the comments to see if anyone would mention McKinnon. 😃
lol me too, I have seen quite a few you tubers try Peters "phaatsup" I must say Sean, you are pretty darn close ! Anyway, with all the tutorials out there, your advice/ tip / tutorial (whatever we want to call it) on being authentic is probably the most valuable one, thank you for that !
And that "what's up" that Peter does, has been done by others before. My son has done thast on his channel for over 3 years now.
There's a fine line between copying and being influenced by. But finding your voice through a myriad of influences is generally tolerated. It's the flat out copies I can't handle.
Just be you. And the you, that you are can have splashes here and there from what influenced you, creating an overall new creation; yet you are still true to yourself.

Sean, as a 65 year old psychotherapist, and a amateur guitar player, singer and photographer, I have to say that you have reached an excellent inside in your life. For you. And you can express it very well for others to learn from your experiences. And what is VERY important, is that you are not talking much about camera gear or techniques (although you do provide useful instructions). Thank you my friend, and my best wishes for you to achieve, what I know, you can achieve!
Thanks my friend.
Whew... we need this, Sean. Thank you for not being like everyone else.
When the quiet guy says something..... they all listen. Thankyou Sean. I am listening and watching ........and learning!
Thanks my friend.
Needed to hear that this morning....thank you
i felt exactly the same
Don't give up on these kind of videos, man...you know, apart from being an awesome artist you are simultaneously inspiring thousands of others ...
Your genuineness and willingness to open up your inner soul for all to view is what has drawn me to your channel. Keep doing what you do. In today’s world where everyone feels compelled to continually market themselves, your approach is refreshing.
You’re in the right path...👍🏽
Thank you.
Be who you are.
Sean, you inspire me to become a complete photographer. Not to just take photos, edit them, and work on my website. But to remind myself to think critically and inwardly about what I am doing, who I am, and let the photography be a showcase of that exploration. Thank you for being an honest guide.
Sean,
Your wisdom rings true. I spent 30 odd years shooting products of all description, corporate reportage, music packaging, and editorial. I made the money, but paid the price. Every job was for an art director, 90% of whom had no soul. I burned-out, and after a decade hiatus began shooting again, what, where, when, and how I want.
This is the way I should have started-out. It took me until the age of 63 to see the light. Once again I find myself hungry to make my art just to satisfy me. You observations serve as my affirmations. Keep-on, brother.
--Mike
+Mike Mitchell thanks Mike. Best of luck.
I'm not big on commenting but this is a strong video! Inspirational and pleasing to watch, love it!!!
The first video I saw of Sean’s was the one regarding street photography and filmed in Rome. In it, Sean encouraged us to think for ourselves. This is such a departure from the usual in which we are told what to shoot and how, thereby turning us into a watered down version of the person doing the video. Tutorials are all well and good when they confine themselves within the explanation of theory, but the vast majority also tell you what is good and bad. In terms of art, no one is qualified to tell you that because everything we do is subjective by its very nature. I have gained more from a handful of Sean’s more philosophical and introspective videos than I did from a host of the so called instructional ones because they encouraged me to be myself. These videos are a delight and long may they be produced.
"Don't imitate. Innovate" Thanks for insights Sean
These videos are why I watch your channel Sean . Please never stop doing these. I only discovered you about 6 months ago, so now, I'm going back and watching all your older videos! You are inspiring...and continue to BE AUTHENTIC !
Thanks, Sean. I am also an introvert and I love the message you spoke. There is so much pressure out there to be successful and so we try to be like everyone else but I still choose to try to find my own voice. I am still looking for that everyday and I have been doing this for some time now. Cheers, mate.
These kind of videos about photography are my favorite ones
As long as you don't begin every single upload with bling graphics, loud muzak, and screaming "WHAT'S UP GUYS", I'll Sub ;)
Looking forward to exploring your Channel Sean, thank you.
DOT COM
SEE YA
Here's an idea, Sean knows phowtows.... Dot com. I used to be in radio, there are a million ways to be distinct. There is what my mentor used to call as burn out factor. But there are just some things that stink the first time and will always stink. Then there are hits that will stink after awhile but if you haven't heard it for awhile it sounds cool again. But then again... That's just me. I find Sean's videos real and simple but elegant.
Sean - This is the first video of yours I've seen. I came across your name somewhere in a list of "photographers I follow". I saw your website and really liked the format. I had a similar "seagull" experience. Took a shot of an oak tree and my wife said she really liked it. For the next year I took pictures of trees and nothing else it seemed. True confession, I've fallen into the trap of - how many likes did this photo get. Today I was out and I just had no motivation to do the work it was going to take to get a good shot and came home. Then I saw this. It reminded me that the photo's that really mean something to me have been very emotional experiences. The waterfall that I discovered, the bobcat I watched for 20 minutes, the hummingbird that all of a sudden showed up and saved a uneventful morning, it was the experience that made the shot mean something. Thanks for reminding me of that. I'll try and remember that and forget about the "likes"
I love your videos! Yesterday, I was at the gym and I glanced outside for a second and I saw a beautiful sunset and I stopped everything and went to go capture the image, I can't explain why, but I just felt inspired! I also took a road I rarely drive down, just because it is out of the way and not the "norm"
Always, be yourself. Exactly.
never, never stop making videos like this. we can find tutorials anywhere but your Videos like this push our limits when we know everything about technicality.
they give us drive to keep going.
and i will be ALWAYS THANKFUL FOR THAT.
I’m a bit late, but wow I really needed this. Will be watching this regularly man, thank you. This is definitely one of the best channels I’ve ever come across!
I've been following you for more than a couple years now. During COVID I remember sharing one of your video's with a small group who gathered together on a Wednesday evening on ZOOM. A few months ago I discovered your book "The Meaning in the Making" in the only remaining Camera Store in Las Vegas, where I work. I pictured myself laying under the star filled heavens ~ as you told your own story in that same space, at a different time, and in a different continent. I understand your passion - I don't seek fame ~ I seek light (which is validation). You reflect that light - not a bad trait for a photographer. Keep putting it out there - look, six years later your work has again been validated. As the story goes, you may not be able to throw all of the star fish back into the life giving water, but for those you are able to touch, it matters to them. That's all that matters at the end of each day! Thank you brother!
"All art completes its cycle when it's appreciated by someone else." Thank you. Thank you! That succinctly put into words a the tension of what REALLY motivates my creativity/art. I also appreciate your caution not to pay too much attention, but put that need in its "appropriate box."
I feel like when i watch your videos i am actually watching content not just fast food for my brain thank you Sean
Excellent content, I really like the way that you express yourself and your thoughts via this medium. It is truly a breath of fresh air.
Why this channel doesn't have millions of subscribers is beyond me. It certainly deserves it. The content is honest, straight from the heart, based on a huge amount of experience and skill and I just click with this guy every single time. The problem I've got is these videos are constantly making me evaluate myself as a person and a photographer and more often than not, sowing the seeds of self doubt. I'm a club photographer and club photography involves entering lots of competitions to get some feedback and maybe a little acclaim for my work on occasions. I therefore find myself studying what judges are looking for and tailoring my entries to give them a good chance of what I think would catch the judges eye. If truth be told, I'm not really being true to myself by doing this because a lot of work that wins competitions is based more on photographic art than straight record shots skilfully made. Take a look at PAGB exhibitions and you will probably see that over 80% of images are photographic art, and I'm trying to compete with this but it's just not my style. I'm wondering whether entering club competitions and exhibitions is having a really damaging effect on the authenticity of my personal style of work. I really want to do my own thing but it just seems to dissolve into an effort to get acclaim for competition results, which I do on occasions. The trouble is that it doesn't make me happy. I feel that my work is contrived...... Sean, you've got me snookered again mate..lol
Honest self reflection like that will inevitably lead to you finding the right way for yourself. You’ll be fine:)
"We need you to be you" - this rings so true. I love those more intimate videos. The how tos and tutorials make views (hence money), but don't build a community and a following this exact video does. I found your channel because I was looking for tips on how to grade (make LUTs from Photoshop, to be precise, just 1 month ago or so), I stayed for the mood and beautiful cinematography, I subscribed for the genuine personality. Love from Belgium.
Happy to know there still are some authentic people out there. Makes me feel less alone. Thanks!
You being you is superb! 😊👍🏻
The fact that you're showing your authentic self, is what keeps me watching your videos. Thanks for what you do!
I LOVE these kind of videos, and I´m glad I found you here on youtube. These videos help me more than any about technical things. Greetings from Germany!
Please don’t ever think of stopping making your philosophical videos. I subbed to this channel because of those videos and yes, the tutorials and tips videos are helpful but these ones are more impactful cos it’s about life and not just photography. It’s quite rare for me to be able to relate to people on RUclips but your channel really resonates well with me. So thank you, Sean!
Can't really put into words what I feel about this video. You said them for me. Peace x
Right!
Thank you for making videos like this. I’m a 42 year old who has definitely lost my way. Yet I haven’t given up trying to find my way back to the right path.
Cheers from California
Thank you for this Sean! What stunning videography with an important and inspiring message!
Needed to hear that after being on YT for 3 years, and constantly having my own father telling me to give up for the entire time because I'm not making the bucks.. Thank you, again!!
Your RUclips channel is like that calm comfortable lounge in a busy airport where you go to get away from the background noise and stressful hysteria!
Nicely done. Your authenticity is deeply engaging, and your wisdom is revitalising. You don't take a bad picture, either. ;-)
"All art completes its cycle when it is appreciated by someone else".... That was deep!
Thank you so much for the inspiring words. I got started in photography later than most and I feel like I've become stagnate. Lost some where between my passion and where I want to take it professionally. This definitely helps.
Andy Overcash
Good luck and many success to you! And to us late bloomers, lol, in photography and cinematography!
I love the silence between your discourse. It enriches your message and makes it memorable.
Just like a great image, the recognition of your work will be recognised by those who appreciate what we are looking at. Great images aren't engineered and I have to believe my work should flow from my creative side and never to be scripted, or worse, copied from another. I have to believe that if my work is seen and liked then it's for the the reasons I make this content and not because it sells well or because it's commercially viable. I have only just discovered your channel and I think your videos are brilliant.
+Gadget John thanks mate:) welcome.
I watch a lot of photography videos on RUclips, but this guy seems to be the most in tune with the creative process.
Keep doing videos like this ! Very inspiring. I'm glad I found your channel
Sean, I usually hate videos that are long with the RUclipsrs rambling non-stop without ending and substanceless. Your videos, however, are really captivating, make me want to listen to what you are going to say. Keep the great work! You are very talented!
Can relate very well to this video Sean, and love such videos from you. Thanks! - Vinod
Ah, another great video.
As a musician, all my biggest influences all seem to have a thread running through their thought processes: they create because they have to, in the sense of it being an innate need; they would create even if few or no people heard their work; they didn't get into creating to "make it"; they refuse to compromise this integrity for popularity. It's these principles that I keep coming back to and re-questioning -- would I still do this even if I wasn't going to "make" anything of it? Sharing with an audience absolutely completes the "feedback" loop, and I think creating without this can feel somewhat empty. But in the end, I want to be the one primarily happy with what I do, and if other people like it, it's simply a huge bonus for me. Being hired obviously requires negotiation and compromise, but these core principles are what set apart many of the greats throughout history.
I love your honesty. I'm facing the same thing with my new account. But, as a professional, I find videos like this most inspiring.
I KNOW!!! His honesty is what got me to
Beautiful. I needed to hear this.
(Sorry for the bad english) Sean, thanks so much for this video! I'm in a moment in my life that i'm questioning my work as an content creator for instagram (@umaepifania this is in portuguese from brazil) and want to give up cause I don't really see it growing as I expected and I don't want to create about themes I don't really care or agree just for get new follows. I want to send a messenge and it's not very popular, but I have this NEED for keep doing like I want to do, like it suppost to be in my mind. This video helps me a lot to remember why I starded my instagram account and why i'm still doing it. From the bottom of my heart, thanks for remember me that art is only real if it speaks as the real me. Great job.
Thanks so much! I decide just put my love and passion on it and keep doing.
Thanks! I think the numbers distracts us from what is real in the art: express the way we see the world. I've look your account and I love it! Keep doing it too!
You just gotta keep doing what you're passionate about. Eventually people will see that you are different and fall in love with your work. "dare to be different" (keep up the great work, I'll check out your Instagram! Mines woodcphotography if you're interested =)
Sean, these more philosophical/spiritual posts are the ones I DO come looking for, as opposed to the tutorials. Frankly, it's partly due to the musical underscores you use, but I think that's because the music seems to fit your way of being and maybe the tonality of your voice, too... or maybe it's because the totality of these posts simply resonate with my own way of being in this world. Whatever the reason, I appreciate the inspiration I get from your presence and offerings, here. What I also get from your work is an impulse to put into the space what you find most valuable when it seems to be missing; that's what often motivates me to post anything at all. I'm not so much trying to correct others, as to add to the deeper conversation. This is Definitely not something to try to control, but is also profoundly valuable to do anyway. MY request: keep 'em coming, as long as it's right for you. Ripples WILL have their legacies.
Awesome video bro
Being authentic. You are destined for greatness. Thank you for this!
"Pwhat's up!" "Shabang!" ? Was it you? How surprised you caught me. Couldn't resist to replay it a couple of times. So not you and therefore so intriguing and interesting coming from this gentleman you got us used to.
Funny. Thank you,
No better advertisement for “being you” than these videos ..... They’re great and the content different from the rinse and repeat of many channels .... they’re the best photography videos on You Tube and they come without the silly hype that comes with some channels, instead forcing me to think deeper. Well done and keep up the great work!
Thanks Grant:)
Awww!! This is the best thing I have watched for a long time!! I just came across your RUclips channel today. This is really great content you are putting out of there, it's like a breath of fresh air, seriously! Thank you!!
Sean, you are wise beyond your years and pack powerful content into each video. Thanks for being you!
Have to say your series of videos are some of the best. No matter if they are just tutorials or what. Let yourself go, do what you want to do and keep the balance.
at my lowest point one year ago and through time of reflection, creating videos helped me. Even though my videos are hardly seen, this form of self expression has been a saviour, thanks for the video Sean
As an amateur photographer trying to learn as much as i can about the craft/art i have found hundreds of educational videos that show me how to setup my camera, use lighting etc, but your videos go further than just the technical aspect of photography. In one way or another they have put things in perspective for me helping focus on what it is i want to do with photography, thank you.
Enjoy watching your videos, keep going ! At age 57, i am beginning to learn how to take photo seriously, you are among a few i encountered and still come back and watch your RUclips, no reason to change for anyone, be yourself, i do !
The philosophical learning part of your videos is why I keep watching. It’s inspiring. I hope you don’t ever stop that part. Finding your channel has come at the perfect time I’m so grateful.
You got an old soul Sean, you are the inspiration, thanks!
Okay, you have become my therapist...through your photography and thoghtful insights on life.
Sean I dunno if you are reading this but you have helped me more than you can imagine.
I am a writer and data scientist by profession and musician and photographer by vocation.
I have been applying the prognosis and logic and philosophies explained in your videos in all fields and I have become significantly more unique and produce unique results as well.
please keep doing what you are doing. You inspire us all
Sean, these videos are by far my favorite content that you share. It’s like Chicken Soup for the soul. Your other videos are wonderful but there’s such a connection available to people that’s hard to get in the digital age with theses type videos. Please! Don’t ever stop; we all need to be thoughtful in whatever we are doing and you help us remember if not learn how to do that. Thank you so much.
mmm! YES! Inspirational words and such gorgeous visuals. You are quite a film director too! BU2!
Been dabbling with photography for about a year now ... and you are definitely my GPS for the journey ... and whilst I do flit around I always come back and review (Re view!) your videos. In the 12 months I’ve seen how I’ve grown and it’s interesting to get that ‘Aha! - I now fully get what he was trying to explain’ moments - You’re unlikely to see this comment ... but if you do, remember Mr T, like the classic texts, your work is likely to be revisited and re-inspire time and time again ... Thank you 😊
I'm glad I found this. Thank you
Your channel and content is definitely different from all the other photography channels. Thank you Sean for BEING YOU in this attention seeking savvy market. Thanks again!
Don’t stop .... do what u feel is right....u are doing great great great!!! Blessings from my end !!!
I'm an introvert as well and I also think these types of video you make are my favorite as well. I always go back to these types of videos you make. They are so peaceful and enjoyable. They really speak to me and encourage me. Keep up the good work bro!
The "what's up" cracked me up. But a lot of your creative flow resonated with me as an artist as well. I'm an artist of many mediums and if I'm not creating I feel like I'm empty inside.
I can't believe that I have only just discovered your channel! What a breath of fresh air, authentic, original and honest, a great alternative to the often superficial 'like and subscribe' driven content. Keep up the great work!
Sean, you are more than a photographer. This video, the one on introverts, and the one about empathy all spoke to me on such a deep level. I think I am part of a great number of 'introverts', 'thinkers', 'the quiet ones' that turned to photography at an early age to find a way of expressing ourselves. While I enjoy people like Peter McKinnon with his zaniness, your 'non photography' photography videos mean much more to me. Thank you for encouraging me to be authentic.
That means a lot. Thanks my friend.
Most of us are so worried about getting the best technology or techniques to be better but then we forget that photography is an art form that feeds from the soul, that’s something you can’t copy or learn... that’s something you develop!!! Keep it up!!! Like I said in other of your videos, we (the beginners, the enthusiasts, whoever you want to call us) need more people like you!!! Amazing work and not only your photos!!!
In my opinion the best channel on RUclips. It's more than a video.
