Thoughtful, thought provoking and as eloquent as ever. As you know, if it wasn't for the downs in life then I wouldn't be a full-time photographer. I think we can build and hold onto a lot of emotion as we work through life's challenges and happy times. Photography is a fantastic medium to let those emotions flow and show a piece of ourselves. Wise comments. I am so lucky to have found a small group of people that are so inspirational. One leads to another. Boy would I like to come on a workshop or photo something. One never knows. It could happen.
I see photography as Sean's vehicle to serve his greatness to the world. Much of his work, IMHO, is already great; and some of that is attributed to who he is and who he's evolving into. As a photography hobbyist, I would humbly settle for 1/2 of his skill and talent. But, that's for me. Undoubtedly for Sean, 100% is a fleeting goal...and to pursue that fleeting goal is one of the ingredients that shapes greatness. Sean's channel is helping me shape mine. This one got me choked up. I started five years ago and have watched hours and hours of youtube videos, teaching myself the camera. I've always wanted to travel for a year (at 40) so I decided to sell all my belongings and live out of a backpack. I wanted to use this time to get better at my photography. I got on the road and realized I had no idea what i was doing, but I went for it anyways. I still wasn't confident in the camera but I fell in love with it. I met so many amazing people on this journey and my year-long trip turned into a photo project. When I got home, I became depressed, my health suffered, and realized I was suffering from post-travel blues. I wanted to be back in the world practicing my photography and not sitting in some office job. I packed up all my stuff again this year and moved to London, Ontario, Canada. I am now in my third month of Photography school and I love it. Thank you for your words. They are inspiring and motivating. *tears*

You caught me off guard with this video, Sean. Wasn't expecting such an introspective look inside Sean's struggles, failures, successes, efforts and dedication to become the successful photographer he hopes he can be. Very refreshing video. Some of us think you are already there. Some day soon, I'm sure you will feel the same. Well done, sir and thks for sharing your quiet elegant message..
Sean, I know this video is a year old, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos on RUclips. When one of your videos show up in my feed, it puts a smile on my face because each one is created carefully and masterfully. It is my moment of meditation and reflection I look forward to each day.
Only the "Greats" have the power to acknowledge their failiures. You are one of a kind. I was very low in confidence and it haunted me as my peers had become successful yet I am not. This created a havoc in me. I am trying to crack an exam from last 4 years & I've been rejected many times. I was at the rock bottom but certainly I found this channel which encompasses my little photography-learning journey as well as my greater life of cracking the exam. Your words have given me peace & rejuvenation. I am better than yesterday & I'll be even better tomorrow. Thanks!❤️ from India.
It is so important, for me, that you share your personal stuff with us. I have learned much from you and it is profound. More than tehcnical matters, it more of the Zen, if you know what I mean. Thank you so much! And, if you die tomorrow, you images my not be famous, but they will live with me, and many others of your followers!
This is honestly the main reason why I subscribe to your channel. So how you always seem to encapsulate the exact state of mind that I feel like I’m in as well. It’s difficult to not let ourselves fall into those valleys of self-doubt and regret, but as long as we remember to value the journey that we have taken to get where we are, you’ll be that much better for it. Thanks for making this video, and happy birthday!
I don't know if you ever read new comments to old videos, but I do want to tell you that your past with helping animals in need and being a priest.... you are still those things. They have shaped who you are and it shows through your videos. I found your channel while trying to figure out how to learn photography, but what I found was a channel that doesn't give me only the technical aspects, but the joy of not only photography, but life in general. This is your calling. This is why you were blessed with the skill set you have. You reach so many people and your advice in photography and life are simply amazing and pure. I am so grateful you share yourself with us and I absolutely think you're the best photographer I've ever seen.
don't underestimate what you do on this channel ever again. maybe these videos not watched by millions but those who watches your videos really appreciate your perspective on photography and how to get better at it. no other photography channel made me watch the same video over and over again. you are doing a fantastic job, just keep talking, we love it.
I'm turning 68 in November. I worked as a portrait photographer for 8 years during the 80's (Film days), but left when I found my calling as a genealogist for 30+ years. In my retirement, my youngest daughter is just starting to learn photography and that has peaked a new interest in better learning of the digital equipment. I had dabbled in some photo restoration using photo shop and enjoyed that. Your video has convinced me to invest in some new equipment that I can use and share with my daughter. Another step forward in my life...
And, as a psychotherapist, I appreciate very much your philosophy in life. I have always loved the way you put your life as a journey. And your are right. It is a journey. Youe are special Sean. Keep it up!
Sean I agree with a great deal of comments below. You have already left a tremendous memory behind, in a world of overly edited and fast paced infotainment you stand out amoungst the maddening clutter far more than you realise. You might not have taken a photo that I'll remember forever but when I take photos your voice is there all the time that is your legacy already. Your videos inspires, slows people down to a manageble pace, you reactivate the voice of reason in folks. The therapist, preacher and empathic wildlife lover in you have molded you into the perfect counter balance on youtube. As a fellow South African you make us proud!
I am almost 50, been through a lot of darkness in my life. I am just now starting my photography journey. You are an inspiration and because of you I decided to learn photography. I haven’t been this excited to learn in a long time. Even when I take technical photography classes online, I’m so excited.
Never realized you had a psychology background which now makes sense with how thoughtful and insightful your videos are. Love that you speak about more than just what camera to buy or what settings to use. I started photography a year ago and have come a long way. Excited to see where it goes over the next year! Happy 40th and sorry for the loss in your wife’s family.
Although you have traded your robes of the clergy, God continues the anoint you as an evangelist of the true soul of the photographer’s art. Your wisdom of the human spirit that we, as those who capture light, struggle with and rejoice in is a true gift. As a guy who has had a camera in his hands for more than five decades as a photojournalist, your words and insight into our “trade” are renewing my spirit to continue on sharing my view of this world. God bless your continued work preaching this gospel as well. The journey is ongoing.
This really hits home. As a Recording Engineer/Producer for almost 7 years now I still feel like I have so much to learn. As well as a hobbyist photography for only 3 years I still dance with the idea of going full time but unsure of my skill set. But the precious concept is that," If I'm learning, I'm not failing" is what motivates me everyday. Just as you said, I'm better than the version of my self of yesterday. Brilliant video!
From the pulpit to the photographer, a powerful motivational pitch. There are few photographers out there who are prepared to ‘reveal’ themselves, in such a way. A refreshingly honest and inspirational reflection.
Even if you haven't yet taken that "shot," your videos will surely inspire somebody to take their own "shot." Thank you for focussing on what photography really means and helping me remember what truly matters
One step at a time, there is no substitute for the time - Sean Tucker I came here after 'RUclips Straight Talk for People thinking of Starting a Channel' and watching all of your previous ones.
Sean...whether you are a great photographer or not...you indeed are a great human-being...your videos are always refreshing and instructive....the 'priest' continues as a 'photographer' with integrity minus the trappings...the journey is the destination...wishing you the very best.
The more I watch of your videos the more I can relate. We share a few things on this journey. The priesthood and photography are some of those. if I'm ever in the UK I'll make sure to come say hi. Same Sean. If you ever find yourself in Canada (Ontario) let me you. You have a fellow pilrgrim with a camera who would be happy to offer hospitality.
I still think you preach the good news, you being reverberates authenticity, clarity and truth. I think you have been promoted. You have been sent into the world and more has been entrusted to you. WELL DONE SEAN !!!! You said: "All art completes its cycle when it is appreciated." Your being has become the work of art now, and 94, 104 views later you are appreciated.
From the States (Utah), I just watched this with my 8-year-old son. He watched and he listened and he actually likened it to his own life, “This is like hockey for me - it’s harder than I thought it would be.” The only way we get better at anything is through practice (time). Thanks as always, Sean!
Sean, you are being too hard on yourself. I am sure that you will work hard for the next decade and will become very successful but you alredy have a very unique and distinguishing style that sets you apart from all the instagram warriors. Your story telling is like noone else, it's almost hipnotic. The imaginary supports the narrative beautifuly. Nothing is too much or out of place. It's very obvious that you pick every element carefully and mix them with a good sense of minimalism. There are many more things that can be said about your style and work but in the end it all comes down to this: you leave a very convincing and inspiring idea with me every time i watch one of your videos. Stay with us. Looking forward to watch your 50th birtday special edition video
Sean, totally agree. Your self-awareness is the key to mastery. One distinct quality between an extremely competent professional and a true master, is that the master acknowledges he/she does not have all the answers, yet people flock to the person in search of them !
Great thoughts. I feel like watching one of these type of videos every week but I actually think the fact that you don’t upload these too often makes them so good and gives people time to process all the great ideology.
Really loving these deeper videos that goes into the thought processes for creatives or just anybody with a dream.. It's really enriching and I do appreciate this. Oh, and happy birthday Sean! - Shawne
A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and while I was undergoing the phase of "Why Me" & the Regrets, I came to understand that whatever I had done till that point in my Corporate career, the results the numbers none of that mattered at all. I was as replaceable as an office stapler. And that was a really hollow, dark yet life-changing revelation. But during my recovery, someone told me how one of my images moved him & inspired him to get out more and travel...... to question his life. That my image had changed someone's life! And since then life has never been the same and I am pursuing photography with a passion that I never thought I had in me. You are inspiring thousands almost every day and if that is not an accomplishment, I don't know what is! Happy Birthday Sean and thank you!
Maybe none of your photos so far will outlive you but for thousands of people the world is objectively a better place because of you and this channel. Happy belated birthday!
Inspire. Encourage. Provoke. Lover of Big Cats, Priest and Photographer. Thank you for demonstrating that this is a long and arduous journey to hone our skills and craft. But its rewards and the friendships made along the way, with camera in hand, is life enhancing. Belated Happy birthday and condolences to your wife on her loss...
You are thought provoking, contemplative, expressive and eloquent. As a priest your messages could have been the same but you chose to enlighten us with the direction of photography. I can sit and listen to you channel without watching and gain incredible inspiration and peace. Happy Birthday and thank you for your philosophy.
You might say of yourself that you do not belong to the top world photographers, but I for myself look up to your skill and you encourage me to take photos in my free time whenever I can. To reach your skill and level.
Happy birthday, Sean. Some inspiring thoughts there, thanks for sharing them. I think you would be able to do an awesome Ted Talk. Ever thought about that?
Thank you for these words, they like water in a desert. They want me to make the journey of my life and realize that it's worth every effort, every mistake, every challenge. And in the end it's all about the path you've been going and not about the goals you have achieved. Thank you once again. .
For amateur photographers, your channel is the place where they can enjoy the learning process from the heart. No anxiety, no shame for not knowing or getting expertise in things a true blissful learning experience, people will remember you for all these things. Happy Birthday Sean(belated).
Love the videos that you put out, beautifully made, and the stories you told are just thoughtful and so introspective. Amazing! By the way what mic do you use to get such great sound?
To become a sushi master chef here in Japan, takes about 10 years. To become a SERIOUS student of martial arts takes about 10 years. To go up in the corporate ladder in Japan takes MANY years. We have to learn from the japanese persistance, patience and dedication. We live in a "I want it now" society, and that does not translate in quality.
Time at home has given me a great chance for introspection. I have been studying in Uni for the past 6 years, struggling greatly throughout it all, constantly needing to convince myself that this is where I belong. All the while I just keep dreaming about my other ambitions and ideas. Each time I want to leave Uni behind, I tell myself I can't because I'm already this far into it, and it would derail me off my path. I like what you said at the beginning about how your path seemed unfocused, but why that might not be such a bad thing. I know this is true, but it's so hard to accept while I'm living in the moment. This video has really inspired me to re-access what I want in life. Thank you Sean.
You're much more than a photographer. You've been a life counselor for me. Because of you, I've put a lot of things in my in perspective. You're a great role model, and a superb photographer. Thank you for what you do.
Happy Birthday. Another great piece. I do enjoy the contemplative side of your posts. But I do feel it is important to say I was a little disappointed by the Jordan Peterson quote. His misogyny undermines any potential he may have as any kind of philosopher. He is not a quality thinker nor a good role model.
I’m afraid we have different philosophies on life then. I don’t have to agree with everything someone says to appreciate when they say something wise, and I’m not in the habit of writing people off when they hold positions I don’t agree with on an issue.
I agree wholeheartedly - in most instances. But I will say you're not in the target group for his misogyny. So the gut flipping fear that happens when he says women should be given to men as sex slaves to stop violence against women isn't something you would experience. He makes my skin crawl in ways I hope you never have to experience. He is not a good man. I can't not saying anything in order to play nice. Skipping over such distasteful comments allows them to take root. I cannot walk past and accept his 'wisdom' just because I have respect for you. I will not. He is evil. There is no wisdom to be had there.
After 45 years of photography I am still on the journey. A few great images and a couple of published works. I'm not not a master, but time is your friend in this craft!
Since taking up photography about 3 years ago (at 61), I've been concentrating on it like a college student crams for an exam. I've taken several classes, gone on photo walks, joined a couple of organizations, watched countless hours of RUclips and other videos, read books - and taken thousands of photographs. I don't expect to ever achieve greatness (hadn't even really considered it) or fame. Loving what I'm doing and sometimes sharing it is enough as long as I keep growing. I love what you do and appreciate how very different it is from what I do. I'm sorry for your wife's loss and glad that you decided to share your birthday with us.
You mentioned that most of us are here to see videos on photography. That’s probably true but I can tell you that is not why I am here anymore. It was in the beginning, but now I want to hear you talk about life more than anything. I want to hear your perspective and see how you learn from your story and own it. These are the videos I am excited for. The more traditional tutorials are excellent but these are just gold
Sean--I'll be 70 in a a few weeks. I'm still working because I am (finally) good at it and I like being good at what I do. I've put everything I've learned to some good use, even those early skills and experiences which I least expected to ever put to use. My opinion is that your early experience with the animals and your struggles and efforts and skills developed with the church have been put to use to the benefit of us all. Much appreciated. My hope is that, 30 years from now, you will still be learning and appreciating the efforts and results.
Perhaps the healing of the animals, the spiritual support you offered through the church and the image making and sharing of photography are all melding as you find a higher calling as a teacher and mentor. Whatever it is, you are an inspiring presenter. Keep it up and thank you.
Best thing about your videos is that you’re honest and educational, unlike many others who just “show off” and give you useless information.. Your videos make sense, they make me as a photographer think of my photography and how I can evolve myself and take my time.. This is why your channel is my favorite on RUclips!!!!!!
That's why I subscribed to your channel! No disturbing gear reviews or what else... it's about the one thing that connects all of us here - photography and how to evolve on our journey. Thank you so much for your great work and inspiring passion!
Happy Birthday Sean! I'm a teacher and father of two boys. I'm a few years older in the milestone table but couldn't agree more. I'm going to show this video to my boys (when they get a bit older) and my students. I see so many of them getting frustrated and give up with everything because they don't see the results they want straight away. I try to tell them this same thing. Photography is my hobby that I got back into a few years ago but its also a mind-set that I've learnt from other areas such as drawing and painting. I've learnt more from what I don't want to do than the things I thought I wanted. That's part of the fun. The journey of learning what others see as mastery or even just competence is sometimes more satisfaction than the competence itself. I know what I do will likely never be in a gallery but that's not why I do it. I know the implications of it being your job has a different consequence but I think the message is the same.
Happy birthday! There is a great saying that I like to remind myself: "In order to you love who you are, you can't hate the experience that shaped you".
My "non-straight" CV made my former boss hiring me 11 years ago. Funnily these days it was the other way around and I switched from financially very unstable freelancing aerial photography back to the industry. Now with a certain age I feel the need to start photography again and "sacrifice" a certain safety for quality life time and creativity
In a world that is looking for "10 hacks to make you a great photographer" not a very popular message, but obviously it is so true. Very good thoughts throughout the video.
I listened to your video and you can NEVER give up no matter how much you doubt yourself. Life is a journey, not a destination. It requires a lot of hard work. Persistence Wins the Race!
The apreciation of change is one of the most beautiful thing, it relieves us from regret and gives great great calmness. It cant do nothing though to make us stop feeling empty.
You are a wise, wise, wise man and a huge inspiration Mr. Sean Tucker! Thank you for taking your journey the way you did so we can all learn from you! 🙏🏼
Sean - I watch several RUclips channels about photography. Each for different reasons. One for equipment reviews, one to help me hone my composition skills, another for photo ideas. Your site is where i go to help me thru the mental side of photography. Yes, believe it or not, there is a proper mindset that is needed to continue the long journey to becoming a skilled artist. When I see that you have posted a new video I find a quiet place, sit and relax and watch it intently because I know I will come away with my mindset recharged and I will be inspired to work more to develop my passion. Thank you.
There's nothing more inspiring than the words of a humble, honest person who understands the importance of self-reflection and perseverance. Just know that this video inspired me at a critical moment in my life and photographic journey. Thank you.
What I love about these inspirational videos is how genuine they are. I can't listen to professional "motivational speakers" because it just feels like they're bullshitting you or trying to sell you something. You can tell Sean speaks from the heart and I think it makes his advice so much more valuable.

Thanks so much my friend.
Just getting started at 40. Good on ya Sean. I'm just getting started at 63. May God direct our journeys. :-)
don't underestimate what you do on this channel ever again. maybe these videos not watched by millions but those who watches your videos really appreciate your perspective on photography and how to get better at it. no other photography channel made me watch the same video over and over again. you are doing a fantastic job, just keep talking, we love it.
Keep it up!
"stay friends with change" I love that!!!
I know this is an old comment. How is your photography journey going? Sean is inspirational.
Your work may not be talked about, but a video like this gives me inspiration and motivation. So big thank you and Happy Birthday!!!
I may just listen to this every morning to set me up for the day.
Besides your philosophies and photography, you wanting to save and rehabilitate animals is enough for me to admire you even more.
Sweat, tears and time ... every word you are saying is a really great lesson for me. Thank you very very much, Sean!
Even if you haven't yet taken that "shot," your videos will surely inspire somebody to take their own "shot." Thank you for focussing on what photography really means and helping me remember what truly matters
Anybody else notices how being a priest for years brought us this wonderful story teller, hidden in a 'man with cameras'??
Thank you so much Sean.
One step at a time, there is no substitute for the time - Sean Tucker
I came here after 'RUclips Straight Talk for People thinking of Starting a Channel' and watching all of your previous ones.
Thanks my friend.
Thank you for sharing your birthday with us ❤️
I still think you preach the good news, you being reverberates authenticity, clarity and truth. I think you have been promoted. You have been sent into the world and more has been entrusted to you. WELL DONE SEAN !!!! You said: "All art completes its cycle when it is appreciated." Your being has become the work of art now, and 94, 104 views later you are appreciated.
You deserve alot more subscribers and love - infinite love for the concepts you portray 😊
From the States (Utah), I just watched this with my 8-year-old son. He watched and he listened and he actually likened it to his own life, “This is like hockey for me - it’s harder than I thought it would be.” The only way we get better at anything is through practice (time). Thanks as always, Sean!
That’s great to hear:)
Oh and a late Happy Birthday Sean!
I'm 55 years old, just started learning photography a few years ago. Patience is the best gear I have in my bag. Keep walking.
Thanks for sharing an inspiring story Rohit.
Happy birthday Mr Sean Tucker! It is really inspiring to see your journey. Such a great and thoughtful video!
Maybe none of your photos so far will outlive you but for thousands of people the world is objectively a better place because of you and this channel. Happy belated birthday!
Happy Birthday Sean. Love to watch your videos. Your video make me better
Inspire. Encourage.
Mr Sean Tucker with bright blond hair is the best thing I've seen today lol!
Why I love your videos is that you are so real. Life left a scar on you only visible by those with the same bearing.
Libras, unite! I also have bday in October. Your videos have so much soul and substance. Glad to see the link for "Mastery", used it to get a copy.
You are thought provoking, contemplative, expressive and eloquent. As a priest your messages could have been the same but you chose to enlighten us with the direction of photography. I can sit and listen to you channel without watching and gain incredible inspiration and peace. Happy Birthday and thank you for your philosophy.
You're very humble Sean. Keep up the great work!
A photographer, a philosopher, an inspirator.
What a great man.
Will have to come back and watch this after work at a music gig I'm shooting. First press piece, well excited.
Good luck man!
Good luck.
That final drone shot with the water and mountains...... Masterpiece! Bravo
The only real person on RUclips.
Maybe one day:)
Thank you for these words, they like water in a desert. They want me to make the journey of my life and realize that it's worth every effort, every mistake, every challenge.
And in the end it's all about the path you've been going and not about the goals you have achieved.
Thank you once again.
.
LOVE the concept of this video... Everything is just so true! :)
Zoom H1 and a Rode Smartlav+
Came for the photography, stayed for the life lessons. Tanks for a great channel and happy birthday.
I come here to feed my soul
@@seantuck Contrapoints made a very good video breaking down the problems with Peterson.
I love your videos. It gives me a fresh outlook towards my photography work. Thank you.
Honesty and humility are both authentic and special qualities which seem to characterise your videos.
After 45 years of photography I am still on the journey. A few great images and a couple of published works. I'm not not a master, but time is your friend in this craft!
Sean....never underestimate what you contribute. Your channel is superb and speaks to not just photographers but to all.
Thanks Brandon:)
You have no idea how much you have touched the lives of some of us. Very happy birthday Sean!
And this is why Sean is one of the most (if not the most) relevant photographers on social media.
Thank you for making this a better place! Happy Birthday.
Want to tell you that it is so emotional for me. Honest and humble.
Thanks Rob:)
The most realist video of yours that I’ve seen... Make art that will live after we lived
You are bigger than you imagine. Happy birthday Sean, be happy and alwas enjoy as you are doing right now.
Thank you.
Amazing thing about this is, that you're 40 and I'm 19 and I take such a lot of motivation and inspiration from you.
Thanks mate
