ABOUT ME
I’m 34 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city s a Police Officer and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 1200 breeding ewes.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RUclips and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Since starting The Sheep Game I have met Lizzy and had two incredible boys Jock and Angus and one incredible girl, Bonnie. You will see them all on this channel!

Love you Cammy, my daughter is Cammy (Camille). I am 71 and I have always wanted to travel to Ireland and Scotland, but life has gotten in the way. I used to raise dorper sheep years ago as well as dairy cattle. Today I only grow spinach for the table and enjoy many grandchildren. Great snap shot into another world most of us would ever see! Love to see the connections and friendships! With depression in farmers a serious issue (as I understand) these connections are invauble to keep farmers well and passing the game on to the younger ones in a healthy way... keep on showing us your world. Its fascinating!!
Another awesome video! Grand to see Iona and her Dad getting rewarded for all the hard work. The joy and excitement amongst the shepherds is inspiring. I enjoyed the video Cammy. But as a pedigree breeder of several breeds cattle and sheep, you can have the very best genetics/ pedigree. You can spend very little and have the genetics and the ram to prove it. But I'f you haven't got the name...... it's nothing but a disappointment selling them and a complete waste of time and money with registration costs and blood testing etc. They all hang up at the same price. The sooner this is a reality the better. Payments are fading let's have some reality because the general public think we are all millionaires.

Great video and great insight into how auctions work. I have seen that young cammy and his brother on the bbc show and their parents have done a fantastic job in raisng the boys you can see how much they love the job and the animals at such a young age

Awesome video Cammy, made my day with the ram (Tup) sales, some fair prices for some great looking ram (tup) lambs....now the hard work starts by picking the right ewes and fingers crossed for lambing time, exciting stuff...

Thank you for this video, Cammy. This was very educational for me, I have been to animal auctions before, but not one that has to do with sheep. I am surprised I could understand the auctioneers because I can't hardly understand the US auctioneers. LOL! Seeing Iona with her dad and that big smile was so awesome! Congratulations to them.

I could hzve wTched this for hours. My father was a dairy farmer and i usedd to go to the auction with him.. brought back Memories for me including taking my girls at 8 and 6 to a sheep judging. It started very early morninng andvwe were t he firrst there and the judge was impressed by how anxious my v 8 yr old for it to sstart. He came over and told her everything he would be looking for. He came over in the middle of judging and asked her how he was doing as a joke and she told himm everything that was good and bad about the sheep he had so far judged..then he asked her ewhen was she going to get sheep.....it was 50 + years ago and we both remember it.

Great video, Cammy. I was totally shocked by those prices. If I had ever sold a ram for that price, I would have thought I had died and gone to heaven. Of course, I bred cross breeds and commercial stock. Still, I think I should have moved from Canada to Scotland.
I had a chuckle when someone commented on being able to understand the auctioneer. Here in Canada, they talk a mile a minute also. After a while, you do learn to understand them. I took my nieces and nephew to an action once they were totally impressed that I knew what the auctioneer was saying. 😊 Alberta 🇨🇦

Do remember that these are the absolute elite animals of this breed AND they are all males so their genes can be spread across lots of ewes.
This sale is the equivelent of the top racehorse stud sales at Newmarket when the top breeders try to buy the latest best bloodlines

Look at the comments… some farmers (based on jealousy) whinge about this and say it paints us in a bad light… total rubbish, the public understand that it’s elite genetics being sold and not every sheep worth this
As an industry we should celebrate success and enjoy this for what it is, the pinnacle of a breed and the culmination of decades of work and breeding - they should be worth a lot

Pure torture to miss the Tup Sales the highlight in the Blackie calendar, first time since forever , can you believe I’ve broke my back again !
Like SURGERY broke⁉️ I’ve had 2 back surgeries and am permanently disabled. Hurt my back at work, labor and delivery nurse. Saved the baby ❤ but ruined my career 😢.

My first intro to Blackies was by the guys at Midlock when they had a Young Blackie Breeders event earlier this year.
Cracking sheep and learned a lot about dressing sheep, scanning for OPA and interestingly the use of horn springs / sets and heating horns to shape them.
I´d like to get a few blackie ewes but doubt they´d fit in with my electric fencing 🤣

Are they trying to get the sheep to move to show it's gait etc?
Yes they are getting them to move for that reason

Sent my uncle a couple screenshots from the video of what they call blackface sheep now. And have never had such a quick reply from him ever asking if I'm sure they are blackface, as thier horns are too far forward and they should be further back curling round the ears and asking the age because they have a big dip at the bottom of the neck and not a very flat tabletop like back
How far back is he referencing I wonder? Is it a big change in the past decade or so or over 50+ years 🤔
@@classicambo9781 big change in the last 30 years, but also what was bred on isle of Lewis is completely different to the softer sheep that are bred on mainland Scotland
Interesting. Are the Isle of Lewis blackface a bit stockier though? Most of our more solid sheep in Australia tend to be chonky shorter breeds and I wonder if they're aiming for leggier larger carcasses in Scotland. Anyway thanks for answering, satisfied my curiousity before my next call out. No mad Googling in the truck for old photos 😊
There seems to be a huge emphasis on enormous horns. I wonder if this is translating into big heads and more difficult lambing. I bet there is no emphasis on improving mothering ability to reduce loses on the hill?
@@JohntyNich from what I remember about blackface is they have always had a fairly small head in comparison to thier horns, but I remember from the fedbyfarmers podcast them speaking about having problems with the horns growing into thier face but think it's been almost bred out them now

It's always fun at a high powered auction, to try a detect what the bidders do to make the higher bid. Some nod or just raise an eyebrow. Others twitch a finger. The auctioneer has to be pretty sharp to rell the difference between a real cough and an intentional bid.
