I've been an inline-4 rider for the last 40 years. Just bought a R1300GS 2 months ago. I still think they're ugly 🤣 But... the advantages are all valid! The torque is insane. 'Low horsepower'... 145hp is nothing to sneeze at! I'll add another plus... is reminds me of a Lycoming aircraft engine and/or a Porsche. The low center of gravity makes 2-up riding a big plus on the GS. I think I'm a convert, but she's no Beauty Queen!

Compared to the Suzuki vstrom 650 the BMW boxer engine and the manner in which they are manufactured they are unreliable. I own two gs 1200 BMW 1200,s and three Suzuki 650 vstroms, 05 06 and 07. Both BMW,s have suffered catastrophic engine failures of dropped exhaust valves plus three fuel pump electronic speed controller failures. All failures left me stranded and cost much monies to repair. My three Suzukis totaling over 200,000kms have never had an issue. One USA to Peru and back, the rest South Africa circled plus Nabia Botswana and parts unknown. Only normal wear parts, never a break down.
