i love how ur mom is like “this is ridiculous” and ur dad is like “this is ridiculous i’m gonna try this”
😂
This is how every dad should be 😂
El padre español 😅😅
He will play any crazy opening under the sun! He is spanish Tal after all :)
You have to be creative and open minded like Anna's dad to be able to create a new chess opening.
Pia is REALLY worried that people might one day call this the "Cramling Opening" and associate it with her 🤣
🤣
HAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
An opening in chess is only brought about by the response of the other persons moves. Starting off with white and doing those moves just for the sake of moving into that position makes no sense.
First white makes a move then Black and so on, each moving in turn to the response of the last move.
Improvements are found over time to the persons last move and so on.
What is considered the opening in chess?
The opening in chess refers to the first several moves of the game. "Book" chess openings refer to common sequences of moves that have been studied and are generally well-known by professionals. Many such lines are well documented in authoritative references like The encyclopedia of Chess Openings (ECO) and others
You cannot just make up an opening just for the sake of it and call it what you like. It has to be played at top level chess in general and played for a reason, i.e a sequences of moves.
The sequence of moves are played for a reason and again not just for the sake of it and calling it what you like.
Hell if that were the case all of the people playing chess could make up a name and call it what they like.... It has to make sense.. I think my sweet you might have mad cows disease. RANT OVER.
lol
@patrickdoyle9369 Well yes and no. There are certain system openings e.g. The London System, which ‘makes sense’ against the vast majority of possible responses. It may not be optimal but it’s fine. I’m not saying that applies to this opening, but you made a sweeping statement.
Anna: "and now we go Knight e2"
Mr. Cramling: *puts glasses on concernedly*
Being a descendant of spanish people, I can tell the look of concern on an elder family member. That was one if I've ever seen one. LOL.
Actually it is GM Bellon. GM Crammling is Anna'a Mother. Anna normally uses her mother's last name
@@sgeskinner GM Bellon Lopez?
@@alinevennemann1904 Correct. Look up Spanish naming conventions for complete explanation of his full name
Mr Bellón; Ms. Cramling🤣🤣
Mom has the Swedish chill and polite vibe, and Dad has the adventurous Spanish flair. A perfect combo for the cow opening! :-)
Umm sir do we leave it void
Actually cool chess oponents
Piano is adorable!
I love the pure glee on Anna's face when her father says he'll give it a try, followed by Pia's horror when he says he might play it in classical 😂
I love that "Nonono, online you can play it, but not classical"
Pia before seeing the opening: I find it surprising that this has not been played yet.
Pia after seeing the opening: Ah.
Yeah she's supposed to be thinking ahead... but I think we saw this before she did.
GM Pia is usually correct
I recently joined a chess club and am still amazed what GMs are capable off. The thing that stands out is to imagination of what an opening might turn into in the long run. Not the exact moves but the general layout of the position that might occur. It a long way up that hill for sure. And having so enthusiastic people like Anna helps a lot.
@@MrDahunta in this particular case, you are wasting two moves jumping around with the knights and putting both your bishops in prison. GMs are awesome, but even the 7 year old me could see how this doesn't work (albeit after losing the 30th match with this).
Mum looking at Anna as if she has completely lost her senses, Dad saying "I'm crazy enough to play anything once". A work of genius Anna!
Dad just dotes on his wee girl. So does Mammy, but she's not sentimental.
Oh, your Dad is amazing. So is your Mum, but your Dad promising to play it - ❤❤❤❤
It makes sense, a grand master going for a weird (i.e. "new" or "bad") move can really upset even the strongest players, especially if they know that said GM has "been looking into it", see Euwe vs Botwinnik 28 dec 1963 (blind), for instance. Yes, that one is on RUclips, with that spelling of Botvinnik's name. (they played in German, comments in Dutch, illustrated in chess for the audience).
@Official_Anna_Cramling. I don't know what that means!
@@blindknitter It's a common scam from random accounts impersonating RUclipsrs. Don't worry about it
This is like when you’re little and you show your parents something you think is really cool and they’re like “WOW” but in reality they’re not super impressed.
I feel seen.
!sadge
I have the same birthday as your dad 😂! And I share it with my twin brother.
@@CharcoalVictor Did you know that if there are 23 people in a randomly chosen group, there is a better than even chance that two of them will have the same birthday. For more info google "the birthday paradox"
The difference is only they actually know about what it is 😅
The love i saw between the daughter and father when he said he wants to try the opening in a tournament i almost cried. Shits beautiful
I can barely believe these are humans, seeing so much bad in the world and then seeing this family, it's like a different species made of love and joy.
@@calumjones very wholesome indeed. Returns your faith in humanity
Anna's enthusiasm for this game is contagious. I haven't played since I was a kid but watching this channel is really getting me interested again.
Same here I have not played in the last 30 years but Anna and he parents revived my interest. I dug out my chess books, started solving problems. A big thing for a 76 year old man. Thanks a lot.
Me as well, and I’m 62 ! Haven’t played since teens.
i saw wirtual play and wanted to play too. too bad i didn't do any studying i just play solo my rating is still stuck in the 100s haha i think i'm around 800ish.
@@takumi2023 It means you're naturally good at chess and got amazing intuition. Study one two openings and a few alternatives for your mid and end game and you'll get to 1000 easily or demote to 400. I got to 800 by only knowing the moves and catching a trick or two from here and there and now, I'm 1200, but that's many years later and been 1200 for a long time.
Juan: I will play it in a tournament.
Pia: *Absolutely not. Not in my house and not outside of my house.*
xD
So the doorstep is fine :D
@@Ttavoc that was so funny.
I'm kinda with Pia but like Juan's response. Don't play it in a tournament unless online play proves it's effectiveness. But thumbs up to try it out online.
I've tried it out on computers and it does well until you get to the top engines. Stockfish rips it apart. But then again, Stockfish rips any opening apart. The Cow is definitely unconventional.
@@kenmccarty6229 I mean, Stockfish doesn't care about openings, it only cares about absolute positions.
If you want to compete against Stockfish, you have to forget all you think you know about chess and play it completely differently.
Hahaha!
Pia: "Yeah but it's some reason why it hasn't been played." 😂
My black King: I think I know why..
Pia is my hero 😂😂
Savage 😂
Pia is so salvage yet so kind at the same time. How does she do that 😂
Imagine the GMs who are up against Annas father researching openings he might play, and finding out they have to prep for the Cow opening :D
Whether he plays it or not, his opponents do have to consider the possibility now!
I'm not good at chess, though I've watched a fair amount. I imagine this would immediately make his opponent uncomfortable... which sounds like a good idea to me!
I just won my first game using the Cow Opening :) Thank you ! It was a 5 minutes game and I am rated 1500. I was actually playing really bad, but he did seem confused :D
Lol way to go lol
Did your opponent use the Bull defense?
Honestly, there’s value in playing an opening never before seen!
I am also 1500 and played it in 7 consequetive games. Won 6! I think people just get confused, because they've never seen it.
"Confuse the enemy" LMAO whatever works ig
1:55 the way he put his glasses on, "wtf did i see"
Fr lol
Anna's dad is such a legend for even considering to play this in a real game
She's right though, this is not a bad opening. It just SEEMS bad.
Yes, he will play it against a very weak player so the opening won’t matter.
@@valeriekeefe8898 it’s horrible.
I played it in the afterschool chess club I run and corrupted a generation, because every kid who tried it won. What have you done, Anna? Irish chess will never recover (and there's not that many of is to start with!) And whatever nerd made the joke about 'It's my mooooove' - thanks, the kids loved that line. Help me.
@@ronbirnbaum1968 It's not remotely horrible, if it was the engine would have shown that. It looks far far worse than it plays. After you get your bishops out to further build defense it would be hard to break through.
I love how your mom laughs every time you say "it's never been played before" with that smile that says "there is a reason this has never been played before..."
Yes the opening is drawish, but that just means an engine can defend the position. The problem is that it poses zero problems to the opposing side. You're not going to have a pleasant game trying to play this as a human
@@12jswilson only if ur over 2300 💀 which ur not
@@masteroogway2853we are 💪🏻
Pia with "There's a reason why it's never been played." had me 🤣. She's always so supportive and nice so this must have really upset her!
💀
it hurt anna most when pia said “i wouldn’t even play this in a blitz game” 😂
The reason it hasn't been played is the moves aren't natural, but seeing the plan to rotate the knights, and develop the bishops in place, I really like it. But it's the opposite of intuitive and breaks many rules.
I get the feeling that she might feel that its mocking everthing she knows about chess. It sorta goes against every chess fiber in her. So I agree, it probably upset her at some level but as you say, she is the queen of congeniality so even when she is "negative" she is softspoken and hesitant.
But who knows, she might think its just as funny as Anna does. Its the Internetz after all.
@@perkalov it is a wicked opening that breaks SO many principles. I kinda love it.
@@valeriekeefe8898
Nahh, mate, its less shit the bongcloud but Its a meme opening.
Objectively you are giving away the advantage of playing white and putting your self to -0.3, within 4 moves.
You are not losing, but you have given away about half a pawn and the game havn't started yet.
As Pia said, there is a reason to why no one invented this opening
Anna showing her parents this opening and laughing has the exact same energy as a kid showing her parents some memes on the internet and laughing.
or just anything else you came up with and are proud of but your parents are reluctant about lol. or are Anna and I the only ones who put ourselves in that position :D
An opening in chess is only brought about by the response of the other persons moves. Starting off with white and doing those moves just for the sake of moving into that position makes no sense.

This video shows EXACTLY why your parents are so entertaining. I don't know which one I enjoy more. All I know is that I definitely want to see the game your dad plays with the cow.
Yes that would be realy interesting. And efter he perhaps win he can give Anna credit for it.
The comedic timing of Anna's dad putting on his glasses when she moved the knight to e2.
Anna: This has never been played before!
Pia: I can tell…
I like how Anna is really pushing the Cow opening. T-shirts and Merch next please!
Your parents seem like very calm and sweet people. I can tell why you are so happy and positive as a person Anna.
Speaking as a grandfather, a daughter who loves what her parents do is a treasure of the first order.
The dream, is it not?
I have no interest in being on my phone all day or sleeping on the couch out of boredom like my dad though. I love him but he has no hobbies and is not interested in finding any either... it worries me for his upcoming retirement. I'm basically the opposite and have too many hobbies...
Your Dad is very sweet! You can tell he loves you so much. (Obviously your mom does too, but it just struck me as especially noticeable in this video.) You have great parents.
Mom: "Are we going to have to buy her a helmet to wear around the house?"
😂😂😂😂
Will be HER birthday present 😏
😂
Nearly spat out my drink on this one 😂
🤣
Your mom is funny--she's not gonna milk that cow. 🐄 😂 Happy Birthday to your sweet Dad! 🎂🎉🎈
Milk the cow is the euphemism for cow opening FTW :D
You really need to be built different to consider this your default opening.
Tyler1: Perfect
This was sweet to watch. Happy Birthday to your Dad!
I couldn't stop smiling. Delightful family interactions.
he's dad is so lovely right

I had such a huge grin on my face the entire time. This was fantastic. Happy Birthday!
Cow opening allows for some really good mooooooooooooooves!
hahahahahaha...
especially for the enemy ))
@@TheLeopard2A6 no sir, the enemy does not get good mooooooooooooooves, the best they can hope for is good moves. Boring, been done and uncreative good moves. But no good mooooooooooooooves!
You are so genuine and have such an inspirational family life. Don’t ever change.
I understand the principal reason your mother is not a big fan of the cow opening: your knights each take two moves to plant themselves on squares near the edge of the board where they lose the option of moving to two squares each. However I do like unexpected openings like this that can draw your opponent forward and create space behind their over-advanced line of pawns. Well done Anna! Now go win with it.
It's biggest flaw though is its difficult to attack from because u surrender a lot of space in the middle
Its not the tempos, or I should say its not just the tempos lost. Its also the fact that the squars are objectivly worse and you lose control over two centre squares.
It might work on lower level because we dont know how to take advantage of the weakness , but on higher lvl... Already at Annas streangth they are so skilled that they will have an advantage from it.
You are 4 moves into the game an have -0.3 with nothing to show for it. You are objectivly just worse of.
The only thing that you got going for you is that you have no obvious weaknesses. But that can be said about your oponent as well, who in fact has better pieces and control over the centre.
@@justincase1276
That is however true for a lot of "accepted" openings as well. Dutch Stonewall, Hedgehog etc.
You will, possibly, be able to attack but in the middle game.
@@perkalov absolutely, there is a king and queen side pawn push feeing both bishops that helps. U then castle on the opposite side to that pawn advancement. Usually I castle king side and weaken the queen side as my main point of counter to the weaknesses the opening creates.
@@justincase1276
You made that account just in case your original one was banned?
Anyway :p
Im not saying that it loses by default. Im stating that its simply a bad opening. Just as Pia implies.... There is a reason to why it wasn't invented before.
The only advantage I can see, from a low rated players perspective is that it is solid. You have few weaknesses that can be easily exploited.
This is true for better openings, like Kings Indian Defence/Attack.
Most low rated players dont like to play solid(read boring) chess, but thats an other issue.
The Cow is a meme opening and Anna knows it, so should anyone else. Teaching or luring beginners to disregard basic opening theory isn't really helping them.
No "hate" on Anna. I don't think she really wants newbies to use it, but a huge part of us watching is far from as strong as she is.
When your dad said he would play this opening in "one tournament" and mom immediately replied, "no, no, no not classical, online you can play if you want but, not classical!" That's a mother's love shining and protective instinct blazing through! :) But seriously, it would have been educational to see you play your parents to stalemate or checkmate using your opening.
May I just say that I have watched many of your postings and it really is a pleasure to see such a genuinely happy family just doing their own thing and bringing pleasure to others by doing so.
So delightful put a big smile on my face. Mum's not convinced lol. Dads enjoying winding mum up!!!! Happy Birthday Dad!!!
Your family are great Anna thank you for sharing!!!
Most love and pride between family members I've ever seen. I now know where Anna got her smile and from who.
Great parents. They did a very good job raising you. You are lucky to have them as parents.
being willing to play your daughters terrible opening at a tournament was such a great dad opening lol
The best reaction I had of her father was, "You play like this?" from guess the elo video. Now, this one, putting on glasses concernedly has topped it.
Anna has me laughing until I get tears. She cracks me up. That laugh is infectious.
I really like how your mom is always true to how she feels like. That's so rare to see women that are so firm and at the same time very kind. You actually got this quality from her I believe. Funny how I still watch your videos from time to time even if I'm not into chess much. You're very charismatic and whilst I'm aware people are like that nowadays for "the show" I truly believe you're very genuine. All the best to you and your family.
Can never get enough of your mum's smile. What a warmhearted, lovely person.
I have no doubt that your dad will win with this opening. I can’t wait to see your analysis of the game!
Perfect example of parents who crushed it. You have won in life if your kids want to hangout with you even when they are older.
Love seeing the happiness between you and your parents - the chess is just an extra.
This is FANTASTIC! Maybe not The Cow but seeing you and your parents in this casual setting. So much love!
Pia is dead pan sarcastic but she hides it with that “know nothing innocent smile”😂
Good luck dad on the tournament game! Looking forward to see it :D
So wholesome.
Anna, you did not explain how tricky the COW opening is to your mum, like how you did in your new invention introduction video. The fact that it is now the talk of the town (even your mum heard it) shows COW has lots of potential!
I like this. While conceding an early centre, it looks super-solid and really-suited for intermediates. I'm gonna add this to my repertoire.
Listen, I did this in 98 during my HS tournament and earned two draws 1 win against players way stronger. One player got so mad she smacked her king over and I actually made it out the group stages where I then lost to a guy who was then ranked a NM.
@@justincase1276 that sounds like you got to know exactly what Bobby Fischer said he loved most about chess: The moment of destruction of your opponent's ego.

the way your mom thought you were capping XD
I love the MOM. Her facial expressions leading up to the demonstration. God bless her!
God doesn't exist
The cow is working. I am playing a 1600 level CPU opponent. 13 moves, no captures, CPU has short castled, I have short castled. I had to move up the c2 and g2 pawns to deter some of the computer's moves, but it seems to be working. Update: Now up to 18 turns, no takes!

Anna's enthusiasm and joie de vivre are infectious.
I hope she has siblings because Ma and Pa definitely know how to make wonderful children.
They'll do the same thing with this opening as all parents eventually do with all those drawings their kids bring home from grade school. 😅

3:45 for instant replay on dad facepalm
This was my opening my very first chess game. No lie. I like the symmetry and defense.
Dear Anna 😊. How encouraging to see your joyous fellowship with your parents. Bering a father myself I find it very inspiring ❤.
“You’ll play it in a tournament” lol. I don’t want to knock it too much, as any system that doesn’t lose by force can probably be understood by the practitioner to such a degree as to make it viable for regular use under 2200. However players above that generally fantasise about situations where they are given the Lions share of space, extra development and dubious piece placement for the opponent as a perfect storm to unleash their creative reckless abandon onto their opponent. I’d particularly be concerned about pawns “Anna” and “Hector” marching down the board provoking mischief on the wings. I’m only saying this because you asked for comments, I think it’s awesome that you’ve created an opening! Your parents and you are truely lovely people and extraordinary chess players! Thank you for sharing them and your passions with us patzers here. Also as a very old person I would like to say that I believe you have already done allot for the image and popularity of chess! God Bless you guys!

This is the most entertaining discussion on chess openings I've ever seen. Love the parents reaction, slightly concerned for their daughters mental health, but pleased that it's only her chess that they have to worry about. And also a small acknowledgement of "it's not awful" ... 😃
Personally, I think that the COW Opening is great. It ruins any/all preparation that your opponent has done. You can just get down to playing chess. 😁
This is such a loving family, you can see the sincerity in her parents eyes, they love that their child is having fun with chess, even if she's not as good as them xD
