      While I applaud the guts it took to kill off these characters I do think the means by which they survived or not and how you were meant to select who did what was a bit idiotic. It's not like every choice was very natural. Also the karma system's effect was incredibly binary effectively ensuring that you lost everyone who didn't like you enough. Add to this the fact that your karma meter for each character could bug out in some cases leading to certain casualties the system was sort of annoying. I'm probably not the only one who reloaded a save and checked a guide online to ensure that as many as possible survived after my first attempt.

    I actually think the first Mass Effect game is in higher need of a remaster. The combat and graphics of ME2, while dated, still hold up pretty well, while playing through ME1 today can be pretty frustrating at times. Not that it's stopped me from doing a play through of the trilogy every 2 years or so.

    • @Wakefieldneo

    • @KingOfDoma
      @KingOfDoma 4 года назад +4

      So true. I simply can't play ME2 without playing through ME1 first (I can never figure out how to craft my playthrough and Everyone. Must. Live. Even Conrad dangit), and not only could a remaster make the gameplay way better, it'd put all 3 games on PC on one platform (yeah, it's Origin, but still... imagine seamlessly finishing 2 and starting 3 like it's the next season of Schitt's Creek). Plus, I bet EA doesn't have tons of confidence in the IP right now... what better way to prove them wrong?

    • @E1N9A8N0DA
      @E1N9A8N0DA 4 года назад +6

      ME1 should, and must, stay the way it is. Its toughness and relatively high, raw difficulty at some points during the game is what current games lack, and I wouldn't want it to be deprived of in a million years.
      No utility of a remaster for it, thanks. ME1 didn't need graphics and gameplay tweaks to earn its medal, and it won't ever need it. People played it, suffered and went through like true gamers, and loved it; that's the thing to do.
      And the way critics bashed wonderful games like Alien: Isolation or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, because they're too hard (scoffing inside), proves my point.

      @Zippydsm Lee God if it was the only thing that stepped down with ME2, the main plot is weak, the RPG system is so dumbed down it'S not even funny you can guarantee two high level vanguard will play the same at max level, the morality system was at the weakest it ever was punishing you for doing a grey playtrough (so for role playing) by locking dialogue options. The level design also is very lazy, you always know you are going in a combat arena at first glance by all the chest high wall everywhere... And Retcons, retcons everywhere.
      It's a fun game, it's a good game, but to me it's also where BioWare fall began, with DA2 too

    • @TheKueiJin
      @TheKueiJin 4 года назад +9

      @@oliviawilliams6204 Come on... plot weak? You cannot possibly say that. If you consider that... if so, then you consider the first one to have a weak plot too. Because it has the same strokes with different colors, however, what makes ME2 simply perfect is the companions. Even the DLC companions, where you can see how much greed EA rubbed off on BioWare, have a great personality and are fun to have in your party. The RPG elements are indeed dumbed down, but this is mostly the fault of the people, this was what was asked of them, and the fact that ME2 is still the best of the series in the eyes of so many people is proof that what they did was very well done. As for morality, the system is never well implemented. Ever, in no game. The only game that does well is the KotOR II, because it was thought to be this way. I agree with the retcons, but they can be explained by people's choice.
      So, before you cast a stone, think please what exactly upset you about the first ME, even though you never mentioned it. Think and you'll see why ME2 is the way it is.

    • @oliviawilliams6204
      @oliviawilliams6204 4 года назад +2

      @@TheKueiJin The Main plot is weak yeah. It's the Collector stuff, it's extra fluff, it bring nothing, and it's not that interesting. You can cut the collector of the whole trilogy and nothing change. Yeah the companions are great, but they are not the plot.
      What upsetted me about ME1? Euh nothing. If it had anything that angered me i would not have played 20 playtrough and 100% it before ME2 release, when i never ever do that. It's the only game i ever got 100%, ever.
      You mean the combat of course i know it's weak, but it did not upset me because it was new for the RPG genre. And i seriously think ME2 got way too far to fix that "problem". Along the way to fix the problem BioWare lost view that the game was supposed to be a RPG and delivered an action game, great, it's more mainstream, and that is why it became so popular, but it lost a lot of it's appeal to me, and lot of RPG lover

    • @TheKueiJin
      @TheKueiJin 4 года назад +1

      @@oliviawilliams6204 the stuff about the collectors is not true at all. What happened at the end of ME1? There are people that still thought that Saren didn't do anything wrong. ME2 directly shows what happens to those "lesser" races when the Reaper harvests. As for elements lost, it wasn't really an RPG... Even if they tried to improve the formula it would not have been better. We all know how janky the cover system, the weapon system, the driving system, the inventory system was. To think that they evolved from ME1 to 2 in such a short time is amazing. What I'd really have loved was if they simply dumped anything Andromeda related and remade the first one

      The ending (especially now with the patch) isn't so bad when you know to expect it, but I agree that the as good as 2 is to play through, 3 somehow manages to beat it in almost every metric (barring the ending)

    • @aBoogivogi
      @aBoogivogi 4 года назад +1

      @@bird3713 Agree to disagree. ME 3 combat came out a year after ME 2 and felt pretty much the same. Which is okay cause ME 2 combat was pretty good. The one combat related area where ME 3 was a chore was in the level design and enemy variety. Far more often than in previous instalments, or perhaps made all the more clear to to constrained level size, the game would leave you in a combat arena where the only challenge was a clock counting down to some arbitrary action and the next cutscene. It made long portions of the game feel like a glorified rail shooter. When "larger" levels came around they too felt small and confined in contrast to the larger areas of ME 1 and ME 2.
      The story in ME 3 was also ok although some things should have been fleshed out more. It very much felt like the only two storylines aside from the main quest to receive any polish was the ones related to the Krogan and the Quarians. And in the end both of them was ultimately resolved due to choices made in ME 2, with respect to the genophage, or was limited to a binary choice unless Legion had survived. Both of which may have been acceptable if the game had given us any new side quests with some gravitas, but it left a bitter taste when everything else pretty much was summed up in the form of a slider telling you how much more resources you collected to the cause. A slider which I might add did next to nothing to the outcome aside from splicing in a few more scenes in a cut scene. It should be noted that the given the impact of choices made in ME 2 having a feature that imported saved games without summarising the choices you had made was a big mistake. I didn't realise I lacked the genophage cure until I was standing there lying to my Krogan friend while or common Salarian freind killed himself over said lie. The same goes for Legion. Until we met the artificial construct I assumed I was continuing off the saved game where he was alive.

      Mass Effect 2 has a good story, good characters and good gameplay. It doesn't really excel in any one area like the other 2 games, but it also doesn't completely fail at anything it does. While not as fast and fluid as the 3rd game, the combat is still fun, especially with the more ability oriented classes.

      Aaaaaaand we got it. And it's amazing.
      Funny enough I only played through the trilogy, one time, 10 years ago. Playing through it again right now is amazing because there's a ton of things I forgot (so it's like being able to experience certain parts again) and also tons I remember. Not only is it nostalgia but it's also kind of sad that very few games can hold a candle even with modern day tech and funding.

    Amazing timing. Just this past week I finished a ME1-3 marathon run for the sake of nostalgia. I still remember where all the Keepers are on the Presidium! The ME3 ending hasn't gotten any better with time but the trilogy overall was still great. The great strength of ME2 was the companion missions. Especially getting Garrus and Grunts loyalty mission.

    Here’s the crazy thing ME2 is the greatest Star Trek game ever made. Hear me out. Going around the ship,meeting the crew, studying star charts, experiencing different cultures, etc. I am not a big Star Trek fan but I have fond memories of TNG. This is the closest thing I think we ever get to a proper ST game.

    • @chrisredfield6274
      @chrisredfield6274 2 года назад

      Basically Mass Effect is everything Star Trek and Star Wars ever wanted to be. It's the single best massive sci fi experience. The world building, plot, characters, everything is solid. Star Wars is cool but gets a little corny and cliche, and Star Trek doesn't have enough action but has great concepts (like that one episode where they find out Quetzalcoatl is an ancient alien)
      Mass Effect is the perfect blend. The Reapers are actually terrifying as hell (The Empire wasn't scary, they were just sort of cool and interesting) the action is stunning and satisfying, and the acting itself blows both series out of the water.

    Truly the most sustaining source of joy in gaming for me over the last ten years. I've spent the last year replaying the trilogy, and it's been the first time I've had DLC access. My heart still flutters upon the sight of something new. I even realized that Omega's design is based on Blade Runner, which has made its atmosphere and landscape one of my favorites. No other game, movie, or book has come close to having the emotional impact that this trilogy has had on me. As I approach finishing ME3, I find that even it is a masterpiece despite its shortcomings. However, ME2 is where it all began. ME2 was the critical source that propelled a 13 year old kid towards STEM. Mordin was the brilliant scientist I could become. Thane was the reserved vessel of intriguing spirituality for a kid losing their own. Legion and EDI were the gateway to an otherwise absent understanding of computers and A.I. The codex was an entire land of inspiration that compelled me to say, "I want to be a part of that." ME2 remains the greatest source of sci-fi inspiration that I've ever known.

    Funny..I am replaying the trilogy now. There are so many nuances that are still being discovered. Even replaying ME1 the story still holds up. ME2 is still my favorite of the three games and I had the privilege to meet Jennifer Hale (Femshep) at ECCC a couple years ago. She was lovely.

    Fun fact, the first time I played the game I didn't realize you could upgrade your ship and half my crew died before I even made it to the base. And then for some reason I still thought of Garrus as one of the tech guys like he was in ME1 so I had him go through the vents and he died. And I felt that of all the party members, Grunt would be able to protect the other crew members the most so I had him protect and guide them back to the Normandy. So Mordin died.
    I'm pretty sure in my very first play through, I had about 4 party members left.

    ME2 was one of the first games I had for my PS3. I spent a solid hour looking through the Codex after the initial missions just to get up to speed. And I managed my crew well enough to have everybody survive the suicide mission on the first go. Absolutely still love it!
    Another key element: the voice acting. While you had celeb voices like Martin Sheen for The Illusive Man and Carrie-Ann Moss for Aria, the rest of the cast acquitted themselves quite well without one false note in their vocals.

    What is even more amazing is that this was the first game to carry player consequences and decisions from the previous game. The whole ME series is unique, and Bioware pioneered player choice to a grand scale. How you treated a squadmate or NPC in a previous playthrough, would act out differently in the next game. I've had so many playthroughs of the entire trilogy, just to see the different character dialogues, outcomes, and reactions to how Shepard interacted with them from ME to ME2 to ME3. Spot on retrospective on why ME2 is one of the greatest games.

    I am currently playing through the Legendary Edition from the 1st to the 3rd. It almost makes me want to cry just how good these games are. They're literally perfect. I FEEL like I'm a part of this world, my crew is my crew, and I have a sense of responsibility. Not to mention male Shepherd's voice acting is literally my FAVORITE of all time for a protagonist, especially for a game that has branching dialogue choices.
    I just started Mass Effect 2 and the beginning when you get to Omega for the first time is just as impactful to me now, as if was 10 years ago. The neon lighting, the liveliness of Afterlife, the badass dialogue choices, looking for this mysterious Archangel only to find out if was Garrus, I almost cried. You could tell Shepherd's death was hard on him and it was such a great reunion for the pair.
    The game is a masterpiece in every way imaginable and no newer games really captivate me or make me feel this way.

    I played some absolutely incredible games this current generation. The Witcher 3, God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2. Games that blew me away, that kept me coming back for more, that instantly cemented a place in my heart. But I don't think any game will leave me as thoroughly blown away, as thoroughly in love and eager for more like Mass Effect 2. I mean ME2 is probably the type of masterpiece that only comes once every decade. Just absolutely incredible, beginning to end. And its not like the gameplay itself is anything special. It stands so strong on its story alone. Just the amount of love and detail that went into the world, the lore, the characters, the stories.
    The entire final act was masterfully done. The way it made you feel like a badass war hero bringing together the Galaxy's greatest badasses in an Avengers-style smackdown on the Collectors. The way it gave you agency in planning the final battle and watching your choices come to fruition. I was just so absolutely blown away.
    I think the Mass Effect 2 is probably one of the only games I immediately replayed upon beating the first time.

    I'd loved the game from the start but when it really got me was the Archangel mission. I was loving playing the mission anyway and thought it was a great 'find a new crew member' mission, then I get there and find out who it is? That is when the game REALLY got its claws into me and I loved it. Alongside Breath of the Wild, Witcher 3, and the Red Dead games, Mass Effect 2 is among my true faves of the decade. May next gen or even this gen before it bring a juicy remaster.

    I love all mass effects from the trilogy. 1 was just finding its footing, the gameplay was not great but the story was very fun and enjoyable. 2 felt like the full package with amazing story, fun gameplay and very replayable. 3 had good gameplay, the story was not as great as the previous ones and the ending was lackluster but I think the multiplayer made up for that with me, if was simple and mainly worked on the crate system to get weapons and characters but it was so god damn enjoyable and challenging at later levels.
    If bioware is having financial issues after there last 2 games basically flopping i would highly recommend putting all effort into making the trilogy remastered, and to a great standard. like you can go from one game to the other and the only notable change is gameplay, all graphics are the same standard.
