      @Talisguy Месяц назад +28

      There's a real chance that one of them will become PM at the next election. Labour's low vote share by percentage means that their landslide was only possible due to FPTP - they actually lost votes compared to 2017 and barely did better than 2019 on that front - so their landslide wasn't representative of their popularity. I wouldn't put money on a Conservative victory at the next election, but I definitely wouldn't rule it out completely

    • @shamrock141
      @shamrock141 Месяц назад +23

      @@Talisguy that's true however there are a few big factors that can and probably will work in labour's favour:
      Firstly their decreased voter numbers is due to decreased voter turnout, which affected both the big parties, in terms of voter share they didn't move much but did increase regardless
      Secondly the Liberal Democrats saw a massive spike in constituencies, finally matching their voter turnout as labour and lib dem voters are more willing to vote interchangeably now. So even if labour falls they'll still most likely win by forming a coalition with the lib Dems
      Thirdly Reform has seriously split the conservative voter base and while that party remains active neither the Tories nor reform will pool enough people together to make either party an election leader

    In all honesty, I think the Tories' best option is James Cleverly. In government he was the classic counterexample to nominative determinism, (e.g. "in parliament today, the Home Secretary, Cleverly, described Stockton as a shithole"). Overconfident, overpromoted, out of his depth and out of touch ... still made him a better public servant than most of the cabinet, including those now standing against him. And in opposition you don't even need to be good at running things, it's more important to attack the government and draw attention to yourself.
    The Tories really need a leader like Ed Davey, but failing that they should pick the only likeable one of the bunch. Just don't let the party rank and file know he plays Warhammer - they'll think he's some smart Alec intellectual.

    I was kind of disappointed. I thought that with TLDR's reputation now, they would be able to get what is happening "behind the scenes" with this election.
    I am talking about SUELLA BRAVERMAN. Despite the fact that she resigned, she was able to convince Rishi Sunak to hire her back. From what I understand, there's a LOT of noise for a Braverman vs. Badenoch Battle towards being the LOTO. Did she file? Or not? Was she able to just not get the 10 endorsements required? Would she transfer to Reform?
    A LOT of unanswered questions really. I am not from the UK so please enlighten me. Because unless she got imprisoned for a crime or died, I think there is a COMPELLING reason why she is not included in this race. You don't join the previous governments and generate such a huge noise to just fizzle out in the end. That's not how politicians operate.

      Both of the had their chance. They both bottled it, completely. Terrible hand or no, they did nothing to improve anything except for their own bank accounts, and have both shown themselves to be morally and intellectually bankrupt people with no real ideas for what to do to improve the lives of the people they were elected to lead.
      They don't deserve another chance, and neither does the Conservative Party. They had their chance, we saw the results. And those results were catastrophic for the UK.

    -Badenoch too right wing

    - Mel stride is never going to make it to the final two, and seems a bit generic

    1:55 let's not rewrite history! Liz Truss was only on the ballot for the final 2 because of a manoeuvre by Rishi's supporters who had enough votes to spare in the 3-way race that marked the final round of MPs voting internally. So they promoted Liz over Penny Mordaunt, in order to force the membership (who only got a say once, at the final ballot) to choose the sensible choice, Rishi. By rights, Penny Mordaunt was denied her prize she would have won if everyone voted faithfully. AND YOU SEE HOW IT ALL WENT WRONG. The poison pill was swallowed. The impossible choice was chosen. And they got their way with Rishi at the end after all, and Penny lost her seat.
    If that was the entire story of Liz Truss, it would have been a remarkable one in itself. The 2023 mini-budget just eclipses this and makes it forgettable, but nothing like it has happened in living memory. Liz Truss, had she just done nothing, would have STILL been a story of the accidental winner who really really did not deserve to win.
    But then she made it REALLY bad, or should I say, the think-tanks took their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and (as they are quite good at), grabbed it. Instead of Liz Truss's story being about her remarkable win of the leadership contest - and possibly wasting away the final months of a Tory government that lasted 4 prime ministers, so she would be the "stupid useless one" that followed 3 that caused all the damage - nope, no no, she was helped by her New Best Friends to do some fresh damage of her own. I don't think it adds up to the damage of Brexit or Austerity. But on a per-second basis, wow, new world record. Mao's "Great Leap Forward" used to be talked about as a way to do rapid damage in 5 years, but this … can this FINALLY put the knife to the reputational equivalence of economic management == the establishment?
