I treasure the Steely Dan output. I have seen them live several times. Old enough to remember buying this on its release. Honestly, not an album that really grabs me. I will definitely revisit. Would love to hear more Dan content on your channel. Cheers.

Great, Ian. Thanks. Really interesting. I’m a big Steely Dan fan, and I have not heard this! Need to take care of that. The background helps.

Great review, thanks! Took me awhile to embrace this album, given its "happier", more idealistic and optimistic tone, with that tinge of nostalgia and romance in a very different era. Few if any of the nefarious cast of grifters, losers, criminals and very flawed souls that fill the stories of Steely Dan. Fagen is absolutely masterful at portraying the culture of that period, and there is a sense that Fagen is narrating much of this through the lens of his own pre-teen youth. I do hear more darkness than many listeners, particularly IGY and New Frontier. I always believed that Fagen's portrayal of the future was an ominous warning of uniformity and oppression, as Fagen describes communism "perfected". Just my own personal take.

The 5.1 mix contained on this SACD is really solid! It makes this classic album sound even better. I wish Fagen had added Lazy Nina on this album as the vibe fits the album perfectly and it's a great song.

I bought the 5.1 of this on DVD-A a long time ago. It’s great. And to make sure I’d never be without a surround version, I bought the Japanese SACD (the one that has Ruby Raby on it!) and I think it is even better. In fact, I think the CD layer is one of the very best sounding things I have in stereo.

Definitely a great deal more digital tech involved than Gaucho. It sounds distinctly of the 80s decade. IGY was sardonic about growing up optimistically, expecting a better world (even back in 1982 I/he felt disappointed about missed expectations about how the world would develop positively - imagine how I feel right now about how things are going decidedly sour!?).
There's a lot of cocktail about the whole LP (walking between raindrops for example). I think Don reached into his teens for the stuff he loved (he's a big fan of Henry Mancini's orchestra for example). I disagree with you about The Goodbye Look, which is bouncy, catchy, intriguing - I believe it's about Yanks being bounced out of Cuba and deliberately funny and disturbing.
I adore the title track too, but get a Deacons Blues defeated vibe from it, rather than optimism.
It's a great LP and the first digitally recorded album, and one of the first CDs. I've loved it since 1982. Perhaps you should have inserted some fair-use samples of the tracks.
