    This is the kind of thing Clinton does better than almost anyone. He can persuasively communicate great ideas, in a common sense folksy style that neither insults the intelligence of Americans nor burdens them with legalese, jargon or minutiae. He takes rural Americans,the working men and women, the college students, the housewives, and the urban poor for a ride and shows them the way the world can be.

    Man Clinton is such an incredible orator.
    Even going in to his 12th (!!!) convention as a “lion in winter”, he’s still formidable. It may be his last speaking convention (although we’ve said that before) but I’m looking forward to his speech. Rewatching this to see him at his absolute best.

    DAMN. I have a tradition of coming back to this “arithmetic” speech after every DNC. Just to hear the old lion in winter deliver his loudest roar and remember the “Explainer in Chief” at his peak. The entire speech is a master class, building to a second half which is pure platinum. I struggle to pick my favorite line, but this stands out:
    “It was a highly inconvenient thing for them in our debates that I was just a country boy from Arkansas who came from a place where people still thought two and two was four. It’s arithmetic. We simply cannot afford to give the reins of gov’t to someone who will double down on trickle down.”
    Spoken with Bill Clinton charisma, it captured his ability to enrapture an audience with backwater charm while distilling the complex. This speech arguably locked in Obama’s term & left pundits speechless. You can see Barack knew it when he came out in the end. Doubly admirable considering the rancor during the Obama-Clinton race.
    Bill redeemed his many flaws with brilliance at this moment. It was his gift & love note to the nation, that only he could deliver. I doubt I’ll ever hear another orator come close in my lifetime.

      i know, right? i love visiting media from this time, like the 2012 presidential and vp debates, the 2012 dnc clinton speech, the joe biden 2016 dnc speech, etc. it fascinates me. i wasn't old enough to understand any of this when it was going on, and i still don't fully understand politics, but coming back to it now just fills me with energy.
      i think the job score parts of the speech were my favorite. he really spoke in a way everybody could understand.

    • @TwoBs
      @TwoBs 8 лет назад +1

      DNC does just as much fear-mongering. No sense in deflecting or denying it, just look at how things were pushed at the convention, which was mostly putting fear into people's heads when talking about a Trump presidency from exaggerated opinions pushed as truths.
      It goes equally on both sides. Both parties do their fair share, it's how they both bring in the masses in for a two-party system.
