Thanks to this video, I was able o change my Troy Bilt belt. That being said, I will never, ever buy another Troy Bilt riding mower again. Never had so many steps to change a belt on any other mower I've owned.
Same here. Also I have never had so many problems with a mower before. I've had to replace 2 belts and the blade engagement cable all in under one season of cutting. It's a complete piece of shit.
I have Simplicity's , I helped a friend put a drive belt on one these Troy Bilts, it had 2 extra pulleys compared to this one, I have never seen a bigger piece of shit mower in my life!!! I used to think Troy Bilt made pretty decent stuff, not anymore after working on this nightmare.
Thank you so much for the helpful video! Our mower stopped driving uphill and we needed help changing the belts. This video gave us the additional "tool" we needed.
The video is great. I wish i had watched it to begin with. My belt took the deep six method of removal. Now i can figure out how it goes together. I spent 3/4 of an hour trying to figure how to install the new belt. Thanks Mark .
One of the easiest belts i even had the pleasure of changing, You don't have to do it the way he says if you are not changing that small belt and don't want to remove the deck., Just remove the battery and holders, take a 9/16 wrench to the Tensioner pulley it will not take much force if the main belt is wore and pull it towards the rear of the mower and slide the smaller belt off it and off the double pulley. now get under the front and remove the deck belt from the engine pulley, now take a 5/8 wrench to the engine pulley and remove the bolt and slide the engine pulley down and remove the drive belt from it. then go back to the rear of the mower and remove the drive belt from the double pulley the way he shown and pull the belt out. to install reverse order but with a new belt it will take some force to move the Tensioner for the small belt to fit there is no Tensioner pulleys on that big drive belt. should only take 10-15minutes to change that belt. less if you have the tools etc ready.
Nice tip on the string. Thought of long nose vice grips but I am going with the string theory. Just replaced drive belt, what a battle. Got the belt on but now no start not even a click or any lights?
Great Video !!!...!!!! Just finished repairing mine yesterday, but I am having the same issue as others, in that the mower now moves slow and I can smell that the belt is now smoking. Mine is a 2011 Craftsman 17.5 hp, but it looks exactly the same as the Troy Built. (Obviously the same unit with the Sears brand name slapped on). My biggest issues was determining if the belt goes inside or outside the idler pulley as I have seen diagrams showing it both ways. It only seems to work on the outside (not the in) and that appears to be what you show in the video at 3.21... Anyway, I will be going to Sears and seeing if I can take a look at the floor model and see how it works, if they let me remove the battery. These little belts are breaking for a reason, but I have yet to figure out why, as my idler pulley seems to spin and move freely when there is no belt or spring, as I would think it should. However my spring was hanging lose when I went to put on the new OEM short beltt, so I'm wondering why and if I reconnected the spring to the proper spot? I will follow up once I get down to the local Sears to check. In the meantime, any help would be appreciated. Dave Finn
Follow up to my comments above... Although both models use the same small belt, The 2015 model which is set up the same way as your video is slightly different from my 2011... :( The idle pulley spring on the 2011 unit is much smaller and the double belt pulley is located to the front left of the the transmission, instead of the rear left. However the the 2015 spring did connect to the left side of the frame, whereas I had the spring attached to the side where the grass exits from the deck??? Also on the newer model, it was obvious that the belt went on the outside of the idler pulley, while I am still not sure if this was the case on the 2011 model... :(.
The problem I had was with the belt that goes around the transmission pulley, so a lot of this video didn't apply to me. But that which did, especially the trick for removing and reinstalling the idler tension spring, really helped. Once I got a replacement belt, I had my mower back to work in less than 10-mins. Thanks!
That looks like a new tractor. On older models, the pulley nut (that you removed using the screwdriver to lock the pulley) is usually quite rusted. Any advice on how to free it?
Instruction manual says an impact wrench (which I don't have) is required to remove the front pulley. Yours was easy with wrench (but yours was a brand new mower). Mine is three or four years old. Hope I can get it off with what I have. Any special tricks, with a wrench , if it appear that it won't budge?
Hi Gene, not everyone has an impact wrench. An I don't think you will have a problem with a wrench. If you do, get some penetrating oil and let it soak for a while, then you'll be able to remove it.
"YIKES" ..I may have to sell mine BEFORE this happens (I just bought it last year) I thought your vid was great, but that was a lot of steps for what should be an easy normal job!
Thank you for the very informative video. Is the idler pully supposed to move freely when the spring is unhooked? Mine does not move. I had to loosen the bolt that holds the 2 brackets together, move it in to put the belt around it and then move it back out and tighten the bolt back. Is this normal or should the idler pully move freely against the spring tension? Thanks!
Last fall I had to use my 2007 Troy Bilt Pony for attaching a come-along to pull a fence tight. Afterwards, when I attempted to put my tractor in reverse, it would not move and stalled as soon as I released the brake/clutch. The PTO was not engaged.Could this be due to a drive belt needing to be replaced? I do need a serpentine deck belt of which I am replacing this week. Would that affect it? Or this possibly a more serious issue with the transmission? I also checked that the reverse safety switch was still intact, which it was.
I have a mower like this. Any reason why the brake will not work in neutral? If I'm on a hill, it will only stop rolling in gear. The mower will stop while it's in gear.
My variable speed pulley will not turn and is smoking belts. I've removed three small bolts that attach bearing cup so that I may replaced, what seems to be, ceased bearing(s), however, I can only get bearing cup down maybe 1/4 inch and not all the way off of shaft. Please advise as to procedure of removing stubborn bearing cup. thank you-Mike W.
ive got a 2003 troy built pont and i didnt have problems with it unit i changed the belt for a new one cause of wear from using it but not my drive belt want to keep jumping to the top side of the verible speed pulley
hey my mtd pops over to the starting!!!!then roll quite slowly....theslightest lowering i stopped(arrested)that takes place it ??????? thank you very much jam
My Front Motor pulley is hitting my deck and I can't raise my blade up past the 3 mark. What do I need to do to get the pulley up and away from deck? something must have jolted in traveling on trailer as it was not like that before traveling. Puzzled. Any guidance is much appreciated.
Would you use these steps to fix the mower belt? I went to engage the mower blade, and it instantly stopped. I noticed the belt came off. I was able to get the belt back on, and tried mowing again, which worked. Although, I'm unsure if I should replace it as it seemed very loose. Would you you these same steps to replace the blades as well? Thanks for the tutorial, the only video I found that had good camera placement and explanations
Thanks for you comments. The belt should have just a bit of play in it but they do stretch over time. If you notice a lot of slop in the belt you you should check you the belt idler and the idler spring. If the correct tension isn't held on the belt it could easy come off as yours did.
I got a question I replaced my drive belt on my Troy built pony, got everything back together and with the mower in neutral and and mower turned off the mower will not roll forward or backward, what am I doing wrong?
Very Helpful. Does the drive belt have an adjustment? MY dad had his belts changed last year and before the mowing season was up the drive belt was slipping. I was wanting to know if there was anyway to tighten the drive belt up. Thanks so much, Johnny
I RECENTLY DROPPPED THE DECK ON MY TROYBILT PONY MOTOR AND SHARPENDED THE BLADES AND NOW ALL MY BELTS ARE LOOSE AND THE PTO DOESN'T SEEM TO ENGAGE WHAT COULD I HAVE DONE WRONG?
So I bought that lawnmower last year TB42 Can you pls tell me the length of belt the one that runs from bottom of rear pulling to front top of drive pulley? the belt in video that you ran up through frame. The place I purchased tractor from said they couldn't help me. Thank you
How much slack is actually in that lower drive belt that runs to the engine. I have 2 pullys that the belt runs over one and under the other; all springs are on and routing is correct, but lots of slack in this belt. Belt size is also correct. A picture of the amount of slack would be great. My mower is a 2004 model TroyBilt Super Bronco. The pony seems pretty close to it, with a few exceptions. Also, do yall have any videos on disassembly and assembly of the transaxle? Im gonna need parts for this. Thanks!
There should be 1/2" to 1" play in the belt. The Idler Pulley and Springs are there to pick up the slack and keep the belt snug. If the belt is to tight it puts unnecessary wear on the bearings and mandrels. We don't have much information about working on transaxles. Most of the manufacturers do offer the transaxles as a replacement part but typically nothing for the inner repairs. Peerless manufactures alot the transaxles and depending on the manufacturer of yours, may be able to get a service manual to you.
+eReplacementParts.com That fixes the belts, but what burned them up in the first place? Our Bronco (same basic design) rides forward in jerky movements and there is a smell of burning rubber The short drive belt is frayed. Could a bearing be bad somewhere?
I have a spring on my troy built bronco that I can't figure out were it goes. . I removed the deck to change blades .Now I have I spring about about a foot long that I can't figure out were it goes. . so I tried the mower without the spring and it will not engage my blades to start cutting it related to that but I know where it goes?
+shon CONFIRM The spring you're asking about goes from the Idler pulley mechanism to the frame of the mower. If you can find the model number on the mower I'll get a parts breakdown to see if that helps.
Okay guys lets changes the belts in 11 minutes! I just got a mower like this and the deck belt seems to be very long . I changed it to a shorter belt and it broke the first time I mowed the grass. What's up with that?
Hi Michael. Thanks for you question. In order to properly access the pulleys that the drive belts run on, it is recommended to remove the deck. It is an additional step, but it will make your life much easier when you try to remove the belts. Thanks again and good luck with your repair!
I replaced my drive belt on my Poulan riding mower and for some reason the brake does not stop the mower anymore and the belt is the right size any ideas?
Used the proper OEM belt and have the same issue Cheyenne and Jeopardy98.. Did you ever solve this issue? I have a Sears model and plan on taking a look at a floor model before I proceed further.
I purchased the belt off eBay the one that goes from the engine to the rear differential , unfortunately I realized too late that either I have to pull the engine out or remove the pulley to avoid the belt guides you know the two piece of metal sticking out of the frame to make sure the Belt doesn't jump out ,is there an easier way of doing it ? thank you and have a nice day Troy-Bilt riding mower model number 13AN77TG766
Here Is how one person replaced the belts on his Troy-Bilt Lawn Tractor. I hope this helps. First I had to raise the rear of the tractor an remove the rear wheels. Remove the bearing cap an bearings from bottom pulley. Remove nut on top rear pulley both at rear of tractor. Then I removed the spring tensioner from the drive belt.Remove old belt an thread new belt up an around front pulley on motor that way you don't have to remove pulley on motor. Put the new belt on pulley and replace pulleys. Attachtensioner spring. Put wheels back on.To install new cut belt I just had to remove two pulley guards an remove one tensioner pulley. The pulley was held on with a nut an bolt, both very easy to get at. Remove old and replace new. Remember placement of belt to insure proper placement. The belt will fit in other ways but will only work in proper direction.Oops.Replace one pulley and pulley guards. No need to remove any springs in this application. You are ready to cut. The hole process took about 1-1/2 hours. It is best to have 3/8 an 1/4 inch socket sets. The 1/4 inch set works best on the cut deck.
This is a common problem even for some pro's. 2 of the most common issues it the Belt Routing. One missed zig or zag can mess everything up. The other issue people have had is getting the deck in the exact position lined up like it was originally.
+eReplacementParts.com What is the remedy for that? My motor pulley is hitting my deck and I can't raise up high or the pulley cuts into the deck. Help please.
There was plenty of time to explain why the negative first and the spring clips are not the pins but only hold the pins in place. Gloves would be recommended to reduce banging hands when clips and springs let go. Better lighting to see the work. This would only help someone experienced with mechanical workings.
Hello have a question for you. My Troy Bilt Pony will not go forward or reverse, when I lifted up the seat I noticed that the large pulley that is on the transmission was really lose and that belt had come off the pulley system. I replaced the belt but it still will not go forward or reverse. Any idea what else it may be, could the drive belt be bad? Or is the transmission shot? Any advice will help. Thanks
I suspect the transmission has gone out causing the slop in the pulley. The only issues I can think of with the belt would be the wrong length and if the belt tightens and loosens when you operate the clutch, you're probably fine with that.
Not to nitpick BUT... you seem to forget about the pulley assembly mid-tractor & what a pain it is. Leave a socket in place over the nut in the floorboard while changing or it could move & you'll lose it. Also you should ALWAYS disconnect the positive terminal on the battery first or you're in for a surprise if the wrench accidentally makes contact with the frame.
Actually, just the opposite. You are more apt to hit the frame when removing the bolt. If you hit the frame while disconnecting the negative, nothing will happen. Then there is no chance of a surprise when removing the positive.
It took my friend 15;00 minutes to change a belt on a craftsman LT1000 TOOK me and him 3 DAYS on my TROY-BILT Pony I like my mower but wish I had Craftsman
This video taught me that I should go to the local lawn mower repair shop instead. I don't think I'd be able to put all those pieces back together properly.
I.. I can't believe this! Troybilt has been lying to us!, thinking we have transmission with 7 actual gears when its just like a d*** freaking cvt!, that sucks, not the video .
Is easy when its practically all loose already.'terrible explaining of what size tools, 7/8 , 3/4 etc etc......troy bilt needs new engineer to design a new easier maze of shit to take off just to change a damn drive belt
Steven Dolezal That main drive belt is one of the easiest belts to replace. That main drive belt only goes from the crank pulley and double pulley, there is no Tensioner pulleys under the frame so it is real easy to replace unlike alot of others i have done for people, I had one take afew hours to do because there was sub frames etc you had to remove while one in this video takes all of 10minutes to change lol.
HUGE thank you for recommending the string around the spring tip. That made this install go so much easier.
Thanks to this video, I was able o change my Troy Bilt belt. That being said, I will never, ever buy another Troy Bilt riding mower again. Never had so many steps to change a belt on any other mower I've owned.

hi i replaced the drive belt on my 2007 troy built lawn tractor just like the one in the video but now my mower wont go fast .do you know why?
I did the same thing and I'm having the same issue. It is either a stuck idler pully or a worn/stuck variable speed pully.

Excellent video. Did you actually do that in 11 1/2 minutes or is there some time not recorded?
mcconn746 I just did it for the 3rd time it takes less time if you don't remove remove the deck of the Axle pulley.
There was plenty of time to explain why the negative first and the spring clips are not the pins but only hold the pins in place. Gloves would be recommended to reduce banging hands when clips and springs let go. Better lighting to see the work. This would only help someone experienced with mechanical workings.
I replace the drive belt and now the brake does not work.
how do I loosen my drive belt on troybilt mower
Is your mower a lawn tractor or a standard mower? A model number would be great to have , so that we can help you.
Thanks, this was very helpful.
Thank you very informative video!
The only issues I can think of with the belt
would be the wrong length and if the belt tightens and loosens when you operate the clutch, you're probably fine with that.
Que # es la polea de la transmisión GXZ
Hola, en el modelo Mark está trabajando en la polea de transmisión es el número de parte 956-04002. No pude localizar un número de modelo GXZ.
Thank you for the video. Everything is basically the same as my troy-bilt BIG RED GT50. Going to tackle it in the morning
Great vids
Followed your instructions to the letter and now my damn brake doesn’t work
It took my friend 15;00 minutes to change a belt on a craftsman LT1000 TOOK me and him 3 DAYS on my TROY-BILT Pony I like my mower but wish I had Craftsman
heyyyyy my english is bad sorry
my mtd jump to the starting!!!!!!!! and roll very slowly
Quite extensive for just a belt replacement.. jeeeeesshh basically taking the whole bottom of the mower apart.
oh boy....looks like it is going to be a real bitch .
I have to change out this belt today.
Rather buy a new mower instead of going through all that garbage.
This video taught me that I should go to the local lawn mower repair shop instead. I don't think I'd be able to put all those pieces back together properly.
Easy, you practically took of everything but the tires...............not for me Thanks
I.. I can't believe this! Troybilt has been lying to us!, thinking we have transmission with 7 actual gears when its just like a d*** freaking cvt!, that sucks, not the video .
I don't think I will buy a troy bilt
