This synth is a pleasure to work with, making useful sounds is fast and it works great for lots of different styles of music. Great for basses and leads, and the polyphony makes it useful for pads, organs, etc. And the pitch envelope and cross modulation make it a great FX synth for things like risers and general weirdness. Thanks for the demo, good job.
GlassAppleBonzai The main limitation I can think of is patch memory of only eight slots. If they expanded it to at least 16 and made a dedicated Roland patch editor/librarian it would be a lot better workflow wise. But even so it's a pleasure to work with.
GlassAppleBonzai On the other hand, there are synths like the Microbrute which have none (not to mention no polyphony) so having only 8 slots is not a deal breaker. It's just at times inconvenient. Amazing synth though, works great with Logic and inspires me daily.
Plug oout? Let me guess, you're Canadian, right? :) Joking aside, I love this synth and it's by far my favorite VA in my studio (and I've got quite a few...) It's too bad Roland seems to have stopped developing any more "plug outs" for this thing.
i really like your honest review man i keep thinking about one of these... I have a Novation Untranova, its hard to mix with my other gear and its hard to edit.
Great demo. So many underrated synths these days. Another feature that is great is the smooth filter sweep, even with high resonance it's hard to hear stepping unless you just don't turn the knob smoothly. I'll try and put up a comparison between this and a moog sub phatty once it arrives and see which one really is the boss on bass, with that tone knob I think the sys1 will at least match the moog. Either way this is such a more powerful synth in features, polyphony, effects, and patch memory with and a sh101!!
gts1067 you are right... Chord Memory is sweet. Ive always been so in and out of the UltraNova synth. It has not sold currently. If I get someone interested in it I'll have to think pretty hard... but the Roland System 1M - very keen
MrBoxxed just grabbed the system 1 by selling some other gear, and i have to say, its the most superb and unique synth ive ever bought, and ive had a few. But if you havent sold the ultranova you should keep it. the system 1 and the nova really compliment each other...
I know! :( When they came out with the Plugouts for the System 8 I was really hoping there's be a version for System 1 users. Especially the Jupiter 8. But...no.
Great review! Those moaning gets who complain about this marvelous synth/sound design tool are missing out on a treat. Fuck em! Wonderful demo. I'm now a subscriber! 🫡
Some people want to complain if it's not a fucking Minimoog. Well, fuck them.
And with this statement, you have earned my love :)
You got me at 9:57 :)) Tomorrow my System-1 is arriving!

Thank you, and I agree. I've yet to find any genuine limitations with this synth.

I would actually have to agree with you on that one, now that I think about it. 16 would be far more practical.

Markus Arike The new firmware (1.12) has addressed this; it now allows 64 (8x8) patches!
l know this video is old but l have to say it is the best one I have seen about the system 1 .
I have yet to make my mind up on this unit or the system 8

Next video I'm adding more reverb to my voice.
+GlassAppleBonzai Aye, more reverb on your voice wud be great...pity ye cudn't run it through the system 1's delay as well..wud be interesting
+GlassAppleBonzai Please also add a sub octave.

So rad!! Thanks for this video
this was an awesome demo thanks dude! 10/10 for hilarious commentary :)
I've put my Ultranova up for sale... Hoping to get one or these or the System 1M.
MrBoxxed shit im thinking of putting mine up for sale too... its a great synth also though, and it has chord memory

I Love this machine.
This or the system 1m?
Suxs that the delay is mono :(
"right so I don't see anything wrong that just happened right there" lol
For someone who never owned a synth would you say this is a good first synth?
Novation Ultranova
I'd say totally yeah. It's perfect as a first synth IMO
Nice!!!
however years have past but no more plugouts are added...

Wish Roland would make a synth to compete with Access Virus that costs under a grand. Far too many VAs and actual analog synths already.
Meld
Roland did plenty better synths than Access Virus
Juno 106
Roland JP-8000
Jupiter 8
You've got a Ryan Reynolds-esque quality to your voice.
I have just suscribed, you are a funny guy!
what an amazing demo... all the good demos are just people who bought it .. roland almost convinced me not to lol
The reverb processing on your vocals is very annoying to listen to. Your speaking not singing, just sayin.
+jerry martinez Thank you!
