- The influence of John Prine, who died last week from complications related to COVID-19, is clear in the latest installment of our In My Room series. We asked some of our favorite artists (and some of Prine’s) to play one of his classics. They didn’t disappoint. Fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy plays “Donald and Lydia,” the 1971 ballad Prine wrote on his mail route, about two people that “made love from 10 miles away.” Ashley McBryde performs a mini set that includes a mournful take on “That’s the Way the World Goes Round” and a deeply moving “Mexican Home,” the song where Prine addressed the death of his father. (McBryde becomes emotional at one point, and needs to stop herself). Todd Snider plays the underrated “It’s a Big Old Goofy World.” Jim James puts his own stamp on the songs “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness,” “Spanish Pipedream,” and “Paradise.” Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey play a gospel version of “All the Best” in their family home.

John Prine's in his heaven, drinking cocktails and smoking his 9-mile cigarette. I'm ever so grateful for the music he left us to enjoy. Cheers to his old soul, he'll never truly leave us.
Still missing the wonderful John Prine. He just took up such a big spot in my world...it surprises me how vast it is and how empty it now seems. These songs fill it some. Thanks.
Ashley McBryde has such a beautiful voice. She's so genuine, I cried to Ash, I cried too..... ❤⬆️
"The air is as still as the throttle of a funeral train"
That's how you write great songs.
Only an unassuming genius like John Prine could write lines like this.
Thanks John for making my life richer with your words and music.

You know that John Prine must have been an amazing man. His music and lyrics could have never come from a hard heart. There was too much love in there.
Thank you for keeping John keeping on
Ashley McBryde killed this.
She made me cry when she choked up.
I enjoyed all of them but you’re right, Ashley just killed all three of hers. Love her “World Goes Round” rendition. Fitting tributes from artists that clearly loved JP.
RIP Handsome Johnny.
I see I am not the only one taken by Ashley’s interpretations here. When I saw this when it went up I immediately became an Ashley fan and love here work. Her voice cuts glass and lights gasoline on fire, with a feather.
I still feel this.
Dang! Y’all done John proud. Beautiful.
I am just now dealing with losing John prince tears fall when I listen to his music
Ashley you absolutely nailed it - great song choices and voice and guitar were amazing - clearly a genuine JP fan - more please!
Jeff Tweedy is brilliant. Everything he writes for Wilco and his solo projects are gold.

Jeffrey foulcault does better versions of every John Prine song covered here and the fact he dont get asked to do a version of song is disappointing. Shoot the moon - the songs of John Prine. Amazing album. Available now on iTunes. Also has great artwork. Go buy it and then send me a wee message to say thanks.
That's your opinion, doesn't make it fact.
Typical music snob jackass thing to say. This isn't about who does it better, it isnt a fking contest.

Lovely! I knew John in high school.
