Welding Project: Custom BBQ Grill Grate
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 янв 2014
- This time In The Shop I'm building my dad a Christmas present. I figured he could use a heavy duty grill grate for his BBQ grill. I used 3/8" mild steel round bar and some 1/4" thick laser cut letters. I used an O/A torch, tig welder, band saw and bench grinder to complete most of this project. I've never built a BBQ grate before, so we'll all learn together.

GREAT video.
I've been welding and fabricating for 30 years and always appreciate quality workmanship.
You did a great job.
BUT...your tutorial on the vid was awesome. Great job.
mountnman3609 Thanks for the compliments I really appreciate it!
Really nicely done. I'm always looking for good welding projects to make with my powertig and this is a great one.
It's awesome that you did that for your Dad. I lost my dad over 30 years ago and miss him still today. You REALLY did it up right. Great job and well developed video.
This was a great project. I might try this myself. I think I might cut the letters out with a powerplasma cutter with maybe some other designs as well.
I really admire the effort you put into this project. Great job.
Condishun1 - Thanks for the nice comment! The grate was well received by its new owner and I'm thinking about making another one for myself. Thanks again for checking out my video.

Jaan, Thanks for the nice words. Have fun in school! I wish I would have taken some welding/fab classes early on. It would have prevented some mistakes and bad habits along the way. I've got some more welding and fabrication videos in the works, so check back periodically for some updates.
Very nice job! Hey I saw tape measures at Paxair welding supply with a magnetic end, pretty neat idea!

• Cool, very Smart @In The Shop .
amazing idea and great workmanship - you would get a lot of takers if you marketed these....
That was great!
The letters were a great look to the grill
Great job 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
AWESOME!!!!!
Great video! You got skills... Didn't even pay attention to the music :) just have one question for you. How did you cure the grate to keep the nice shiny finish?
Good job! What current (amperage) did you use?
do yo have a video/site detailing the saw setup you're using??
Awesome video! I found this looking for ideas of building myself new grates for my grill. Just one question, did you put anything on it to prevent rusting? If so, what was it and is it safe for food? Thanks!
Nice video! Love the originality. How long did it take?
I will begin a welding program in Jan '15, this was great motivation.
Why not weld with steel filler? Won't the silicone bronze want to pull away due to different thermal expansion rates than steel?
well done. how did you get the SiBronze to wet out so nice? i tried to tig SiBronze but could never get it to wet out.
That looks very nice! When I get my welder, I may try my hand. Is it possible to make it with stainless steel rods of the same size? I'm thinking it will be either stick or mig. Thanks.
+chalemi nice custom grill grate but in my opinion bar thickness is overkill! and since you think of using stainless steel there is no reason to use so thick rods....
What was your material cost for the 3/8" round bar? I'm trying to determine if it is worth DIY or just buying a new grill grate. Does food stick to the steel more so than cast iron or porcelain? How long will it last vs a purchased grate?
What's the best aluminum to buy for a griddle ?
Very cool. I'm curious how much all that steel cost you?
How did that silicon bronze hold up?
please need your help, what dia stéel you use? second what kinda of steel it is...i mean stainless steel or just steel kindly little explain i wann make one i asked stainless steel its very expensive
Dobra robota ;)
How did you clean the steel? Wire wheel?
Where did you order the letters? I am having a hard time finding them
What is the material used?( Rod material)
Nice job, only one thing,,,, Did your arms turn in Red,,,?
Hello, is that a regular portable bandsaw? It looks really big? What model is it?
Also , what TIg welder are you using?
Nice looking grate
Manny Yabar Thanks for the comments! It's a standard Milwaukee portable band saw. I think it's model 6230. I built the stand that's clamped into a vise after seeing someone else's custom stand online. The welder is a Miller Dynasty 200dx that I bought second hand a few years ago. They are great machines if you can get your hands on one. Thanks again!
How much to make me one?
Nice grate you did there. Would you be able to build a custom size if I pay you for it?
Vangsnet, Thanks for checking out the video! Send me an email with your contact information and we can talk about it. Do you want one that says "CRAIG"? Because I know where we can get one. keegansgarage@gmail.com
For real I’d consider purchasing something like this as well. You could sell them on etsy

Why do you take Christ out of Christmas
Chase Berry bc he can
Chase Berry, several years ago, I discovered that the X in Xmas is actually part of the Greek letters Chi and Rho, which were part of the Christos, so while we usually consider it an abbreviation, it's actually part of the historical reference to Christ...according to my research findings. :)
