Homemade Grill Grate - Welding

- This video shows how to build a heavy duty grate / cooking grid for a BBQ grill. This is a small welding project that is easy to do and extremely useful. All materials cost less than $30. The materials include: 3/4" angle iron and 3/8" hot roll rod. This grill costs a fraction of the price of buying a new one, and is significantly more durable. Enjoy making your own!

Phil, the spacing was genius!
thanks!
one thing about seasoning raw steel. you really want to scrub the heck out of it with dish soap and a coarse scotchbrite. then, heat it on the grill to smoking hot. let it cool most of the way and THEN smother it in crisco and reheat it. after it cools down, wipe it down with a dry rag and reapply crisco. and go through another heat cycle. not only will it make your grill more "anti-stick", but it really does a good job of eliminating the steel manufacturers oils and so on
thanks for the tip
For woks, you hear it up so much that the oil just burns off
Awesome freaking video!! straight to the point easy to understand!!!👍👍
THANKS!
Great job of showing each step clearly. And yep, using extra pieces of the same stock you're installing works on many projects, just like you used the 3/8" cold roll stock on this one. 😁
Glad it was helpful!
@@PhilCrockett I hope it's helpful for others. It's what I'd do, myself, if doing that project. 🙂
That is an outstanding video. Clear and concise. Just what I was looking for. Can I use a flux core welder for this project?
I used flux core on this. LOVE flux core!
@@PhilCrockett I thought so, but I was not 100% sure. Thank you for your prompt response. I subscribed!
Excellent, thanks for posting! Exactly what I need to do to my smoker.
glad I can help. let me know how it turned out
Nice. It seems obvious, but your spacing hack really impressed me. I have made maybe 30 grills in my life and this just never occured to me!😏
thanks!
Man thank you for this video now I need to buy the materials and all those tools to make the grates to my grill. but way there's more ! 😂 I should just buy the grates for my grill either online by Amazon or local stores... 👍🏻 thank you.
Right on!
Good idea Phil 😁😁🤘🤘
Thanks!
I like welding and DYI, but got damn the price of steel is ridiculous to the point it costs more to fabricate than it is to buy commercial made products. Well, nothing beats customs builds though. Looks like a great and simple design you came up with. Good job, and thanks for sharing your step by step video.
Yes indeed, everything is so expensive now. It's almost cheaper to buy Chinese made everything.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
This was a great video!! thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching, Manny!
Why did you weld every rod? Everyone I know who does this professionally drills holes in the frame for the rods to turn freely, better for longevity after hot cold cycles
No blah,blah,blah excellent video!
I hate blah blah blah blah blah! All of my videos have no blah blah blah blah blah! Hope you can watch them and appreciate them. Thanks for taking the time to comment, my friend!
Nice job.
Thanks, Ryan!
Maybe we could make our own, but I haven’t welded since high school. 😢
never to soon to start up again. Thanks for watching and commenting
Where did you buy the hot roll rod, I've been looking for It and it's really expensive :(
Local steel and welding shop. Don't buy from big-box-stores.... they jack the price so HIGH, you'll think you're Snoop Dogg!
Is that mild steel or stainless steel? And is it safe to cook on mild steel grate?
It's steel rod... just like the park grills.
It’s definitely not stainless steel
Minus labor, what do you think this project cost?
I did this for about $30. The rod is super cheap. However, steel prices vary depending on where you go, so shop around for sure. there was 2 steel businesses in my town about 10 years ago that priced 30% different when comparing. could be the one was selling China steel and the other one was US steel.
Where did you buy the material? what was the size of the grill ?
local metal shop (welding shop). 31 1/2" X 19" is my grill size.
Yo, Phil and you won't wear that one out any time soon like you did the other one. Hope all is well with all yall and you have another Jesus weekend! GBWYall from (Us'ns) here on the hilly swamp
yes... this grate will outlast the rest of it! Just had a nice big T-bone on it last night. Good hearing from you! GBWU2!
Whats the length for the angle iron
it depends on the size of your grill.
you shoulda cleaned the rods with tsp before seasoning
Sonda vurulan yağdı?
şimdi yağmur yağıyor
What is shot in the end?
I believe that was a sirloin. However, I like ribeyes better
@@PhilCrockett Try a pork shoulder steak. You may never go back to beef!
