  • It was not often that Bach gave an indication of tempo in his chorale arrangements, but he wrote ‘adagio’ above this version of ‘Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr’, performed by Reitze Smits for All of Bach. He apparently wanted no misunderstandings about the atmosphere he had in mind for this composition. He could have also lent a festive air to these words of praise, especially in view of his choice of two keyboards and pedal. But what we hear is balm for the soul.

    One of the very last pieces Bach wrote, it exudes his embrace of the spiritual life he knew was about to come.

    The organist catches wonderfully the serene atmosphere of this piece and we can actually feels the connection between text and music, on which he talked in the interview. Thanks Reitze Smits and thanks NBS for this unique upload.

    Mr. Smits, never leave us alone, we need your unique sensibility. Your are the greatest organist I ever heard. Thank you so much! Waiting for your next Bach recording. Each week I go and enjoy your incredible, fantastic Passacaglia. Happy new year, you are great!

      I agree completely. Every recording from Mr. Smits is a revelation- I sincerely hope that NBS return to this unique artist instead of the always agitated and nervous Koopman. We really need Mr. Smits unique playing and spirit. He breaths the phrases, he sings, he is a virtuoso in all means. I really never understood the reverens for Koopman.

      @@pelaugfi62 I agree also. Reitze Smits is my favourite Bach organ player. Koopman means 'merchant' in Dutch, and in my opinion he's merchandising Bach as a brand, selling it to the masses, whereas Smits is reaching the soul of Bach.

    Wunderschöne und detaillierte Aufführung dieses kompakten doch perfekt komponierten Meisterwerks im präzisen Tempo mit durchsichtigen doch etwas warmherzigen Tönen der historischen Orgel. Wahrlich intelligenter und genialer Organist!

      @leomignonneau1765 3 года назад +1

      Stimmt, sehr gut gesagt. Persönlich finde ich das Tempo angemessen, aber es scheint mir als gäbe es bei allen Passagen eine gewisse, fortlaufende Trägheit, auch bei den musikalischen Formen, bei welchen diese gar zu fromme Einstellung nicht notwendig wäre und etwas Anschub gebrauchen könnte.
