Thank you so much if you watch this through guys! This is the first Scorsese film I've reviewed and it proved to be a big personal challenge & my longest review to date! That's what the movies are about! I can't wait to hear everyones thoughts on how this important story was portrayed, and as always, here are some resources to support the ongoing strike. The WGA may have reached a deal, but SAG-AFTRA still needs our support⬇

Thanks for bringing a bit of nuances in the avalanche of dithyrambic reviews. This is definitively an excellent and necessary movie but I also feel that the point of view (indeed, diverted from the first idea of placing it from the eyes of Tom White but ending up focusing a lot on the DiCaprio character) removes a bit of the light that needs to be placed on the Osage character and though Lily Gladstone gives a stellar performance, a greater place for her would have been even more appreciated. Nothing to annihilate the appreciation of the film but just a few spices of disappointement over this well-crafted dish of a movie.

I’m glad they didn’t go the mystery route. I feel like it’s more respectful that way so people aren’t so focused on the investigation and reveals of it all and just focus on the story and lay it out like it is from the jump. But that’s just me.

Great review. I'm in a similar boat as you (liked it, but did not love every part of it). I have seen it twice now and I do think for those not familiar with the source material (myself included), a rewatch greatly helps. I would have liked to see more Gladstone/DiCaprio and their relationship rather than the De Niro/DiCaprio relationship that dominates much of the film. The dinner scene where Mollie and Ernest are just sitting there at the table during the thunderstorm without much dialogue or anything happening is an example of a brilliant little nugget that I wish there was more of. So while I do think the 3.5 hour runtime is earned, I didn't always love what the film devoted that time to.
Overall, I personally enjoyed Oppenheimer more. The frenetic rhythm and cuts through time in that film were consistent throughout the runtime. Conversely, KOTFM's emotional stillness juxtaposed with the speed of the police procedural final act felt at times more in conflict with each other than synergistic. These observations are tough to nail down precisely on first viewing(s) though as you said, and will be interesting to see how both films age.

Got around to watching KOTFM yesterday and had alot of mixed feelings about it, but honestly your entire review are exactly my thoughts. It's easy to have the "in an ideal world" conversation but realistically, what Osage filmmaker has the proven experience and talent to handle a 200-million-dollar production? Scorsese made the wise choice to use actual Osage people in the film, and while it's lovely, it's not hard to tell who the non-professional actors are. While not ideal, I think Scorsese being chosen as the director is ultimately the best outcome since 1. he is probably the greatest living director and 2. the reach of the film is now probably 1000x that of what it would have been if it were given to a first-time filmmaker and a cast of unknowns.
Reservation Dogs was the first mainstream wide-release Native American film project so I can definitely see a future where we see growing talents but for this film, I think Scorsese was the right choice.

I finally watched this film recently and its a mid kinda watch for me, that raised a few questions (mainly to do with why the Osage were in that situation with europeans controlling their money, why the Osage women felt for these men and how they could see the KKK as part of the solution to name a few). The runtime wasn't a problem for me at all however. The third act seemed iffy at first as it felt like it was focusing too much on humanising caprios character but I felt it balances out the feelings of the couple against each other well in the end. Now to check out Napoleon

I am probably part of the 1 percent that dont like the movie but I feel like it was a bit of a slog, maybe I just don't like Scorsese's 3 hour epic dramas. It feels way too similar to the irishman imo, where it feels way too much like a mob movie (with deniro and dicaprios interactions and how they go about their business). Although the story itself is interesting, the Scorsese style epic hurts it, the way they shoot and setup the murders feels very bland and bleak (although that might be what its going for). The 2nd half definitely felt more engrossing than the first.

This is an excellent film, timeless in both its filmmaking techniques and the haunting story it narrates. In my opinion, 'Oppenheimer' is the superior film. I sincerely hope Lily Gladstone wins an Oscar. I concur wholeheartedly that Ernest knew exactly what he was doing. He didn't initiate his pursuit of Molly until Hale suggested it, despite having driven her around earlier.
Regarding the scene you referenced, where Molly 'comes to terms' but isn't shown on screen, are you referring to the moment near the end, in the small room, where Molly rises from her chair and walks away after Ernest deceives her about disclosing everything related to her injections?
Also, I'm curious about your interpretation of the scene where Ernest pours the remaining "medicine" from the vial (presumably the lethal dose) into his drink, finishes it, and then lies down at the foot of Molly's bed, falling asleep as she lies there dying. It's a profoundly disturbing betrayal, further underscored by the complicity of the entire white community. Even Hale used the derogatory term 'Blanket' when referring to Rita.
The conclusion is symbolic, representing how this story, like many others, was concealed and denied as if it never occurred.

When I finished Grann's book a couple of weeks ago I was shocked that Scorsese undertook this bit of Osage history. I'm really looking forward to watching it but I know that my bar for doing the story justice is very high. My biggest worry is that the Osage won't feel bigger than the things that happened to them. Indigenous representation is really hard to come by in mainstream cinema so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is a good one... but it is already very disappointing that Ernest is the main character. I'm getting tired of evil and morally conflicted white men in the forefront.
