I am a life-long wrestling fan, and i remember watching all the Von Erichs wrestle, and die within a decade. Ive told my friends for almost 15 years that eventually Hollywood would make a movie about them, the story is a modern Greek Tragedy that's almost unbelievable. I went to their graves, and left a Yellow Rose for each brother and father Fritz. I cried a lot during this. Efron will win the Best Actor Oscar for this.
The scene where they are at the table, eating dinner, you feel like you are sitting at the table as Kevin, such an amazing movie! I loved it.
David Von Erich was my uncle, by marriage. He married my moms sister. Granted I was very young when he passed, I still grew up close to the family. Such a tragic story, but proud of Kev for breaking the curse. I know my aunt isn’t in it, and nobody from A24 or affiliated with the movie reached out to her. I obviously know a lot of things that majority of the public doesn’t know, so I am interested to see how it plays out.
He was my uncle too. We used the throw the football around with Magic Johnson, Mick Jagger, and Bigfoot.
@@Captain_AAhab cool story bro
Maybe don't be a dick...@@Captain_AAhab
I saw David wrestle a few times at the Sportatorium in 1983 and early 1984, and was at the Parade of Champions at Texas Stadium when Kerry beat Ric Flair for the NWA world title. Their graves are very close to where I grew up in Dallas. RIP legends. The Von Erichs were true icons.
@@Captain_AAhabLMFAO
Nobody officially knew in WWF that Kerry (Texas Tornado) competed without a leg. The guy went to become a champion and everything. The wrestling organizations would not have allowed him to work. Fighting with a prothesis must have been painful.
Your saying they wouldnt have had docs do physicals before working for them....i doubt that with contracted workers
Rush Tom Sawyer was the enterance Music for Kerry Von Erich when he was in WCCW. His nickname was the
modern-day warrior.
Your enthusiasm in this review was so tangible that I am now excited to see this movie. Even as a long time wrestling fan, I didn't think I'd be interested in this story, but after hearing your thoughts, it's on my list. Pretty cool to find a reviewer who can communicate their theater-going experiences so effectively.
Ah that’s awesome!! I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’re a fan. My friends who are into it all gave it great reviews as well.
You have no idea how excited I am to see a serious dramatic performance from Zac Efron. I always knew he had it in him.
He’s had a few serious dramatic efforts in films now already
I think Hollywood should make more biopic about the professional wrestling business just because there’s so much shit that has happened behind the scenes like a whole story on Vince McMahon, the Montreal screw job, or even the Benoit tragedy, there’s so much real stuff that has happened that would probably make for some interesting movies like iron claw
I'd be perfectly fine without a Benoit biopic.. don't need to see what happened to his family on screen.
I enjoy watching non wrestling fans take on this. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's honestly a tragic tale that anyone can watch with wrestling sprinkled on the side. As a wrestler, I enjoyed it, and it hit home in a lot of ways. Great review.
Yeah, The Iron Claw made me cry and given us Zac Efron's best performance of his career. Like you, I went in knowing nothing about the family and its struggles. To me, I think it's best for the audience going in to see the film blind and witness the story that was told. Great review.
Glad you loved it too Bernardo!!
0:05 The movie leaving Chris out really bothered me; especially knowing it was his feeling of inadequacy that led to his passing.
He should have been a part of this story.
Exactly! My thoughts also...
Just watched it today with my gf, we both loved it. Zac Efron blows it out of the park in this one too. I had no idea what i was getting myself into going into the theater but i came out deeply satisfied with a beautifully told story about loss and what it takes to overcome it. Great video btw
Well the reason why they used Tom Sawyer from Rush is because that was Kerry Von Erich's entrance music back in the day. He use to call himself the Modern Day Warrior. And by the way, World Class Championship Wrestling was the first big wrestling company to use known rock songs for entrance music.
Just got out of the theater and still wiping tears away, what a movie!!!
Hey you say you saw the movie my son wants to see it but wanted to know if they have sex scenes in it
Almost….no female nudity. It’s suggestive that it’s gonna happen, but that’s all
Grew up as a kid in the 80's and was a huge wrestling fan; I watched the Von Erich's and they were some of my favorites! I absolutely loved this movie and it did hit me hard emotionally. I hope this film opens the doors to more wrestling biopics because there's so many interesting and unbelievable real life stories to tell!
I Agree This movie is a truly sad and powerful story. i had heard and looked into The Von Erich legacy and was hit in the heart everytime i got more in depth with there lives. i was surprised they left out Chris, i lost my 3 brothers and i was truly debating about watching this film because i knew the story and im glad i did go and see it and i couldn't hold back any tears while watching the movie. truly and incredible and powerful movie
Honestly the best review I’ve seen on a movie in a long time, the vocabulary you use to describe the film elevates the beauty of it. AWESOME JOB!
Wow that’s so kind of you, thanks for watching!!🙌🏼
I wasn’t anticipating fully weeping in the theater to this film. I really enjoyed it.
It's makes me a little more than teary eyed to see Kevin Von Erich get his flowers. ❤❤❤
He seems like a seriously great guy, he’s been through so much!
@@SydneyVolpethey don't show Kevin's substance abuse, his almost dying in the ring from his drug use, or Kerry's arrests. Don't be fooled by this sweetened version of the family. Look up rumors of the cat killing
Congrats on your review blowing up!
I grew up here in Texas, and watch the Von Erics as a kid. They were amazing. Being half hispanic, I do know that people in Mexico loved the Von Erics, as well. they were hugely popular. I really love that this movie was made, and that Kevin was involved in the making this instead of Hollywood just making whatever they want based on books and stories.
Jack Jr. at the end got me. 😭😭😭
Kerry von Erich played by Jeremy, used to come out to the ring to Tom Sawyer
Kerry Von Erichs nickname was Modern Day Warrior which is why Tom Sawyer is in the movie.
RIP Jack Adkisson
RIPDavid Von Erich
RIP Mike Von Erich
RIP Chris Von Erich
RIP Kerry Von Erich

Huge wrestling fan here!! Great to see a non fan so enthusiastic about this little known gem of a story within the business! Wrestling is much more layered than people give it credit for
Sydney!! Thank you for the review! I can feel the passion you have for this film just talking about it, and I’m a bit more excited to see it now than I already was! Can’t wait!
Growing up in Lake Dallas,Texas where the Von Erich’s are from had me excited for this film day 1. Can’t wait to see it.
OMGG that’s so cool!! I hope you enjoy it
Lifelong wrestling fan. Movie was absolutely incredible. Heartbreaking story
I would wake up religiously every Sunday morning glued to a black n white TV in my bedroom to watch them wrestle with the volume down low not to wake up the rest of the family. The matches vs the Freebirds were unbelievable. Then i lost track and saw a documentary many years later and was absolutely SHOOK for over a week!!! I'm taking my wife and twin 16 year old boys on Thursday. They know nothing about the story 😏😂...
Perfect! Your sons are going to think WOW we have a great Dad! We could have had that guy! Or my Dad.
@@reesebn38 Not really, they are gonna be like Holy shit wtf just happened. Let me count my blessings....
Wonderful review- spot on!!!
This was beautifully reviewed by you and I appreciate the passion you put into it. I am going to see the movie early next week. I am going to have to try and hold it together from what I am hearing. I don’t want to be a grown man crying in a theater especially with all my lady friends, sons, and wife with me. When I was a boy growing up in North Texas, I watched these guys every Saturday night and every Sunday morning. They were our super heroes and we used to hold play matches, pretending to be them. I watched Kevin wrestle in the middle of our football field in our itty bitty town. Lots of emotions. But, thank you for your genuineness, it’s got me very excited to see the film.
Great review Sydney. We are lifelong wrestling fans and you did a great respectful review. New subscriber!
Aw i appreciate that so much, especially from people who know the material!!🙏🏼
What a great review. I am a life long fan of the Von Erichs and you summed it up perfectly. The time frame of the tragedies were a little sped up but the story stayed loyal to the truth. They also had alot of little inside things i picked up on that i enjoyed. I just subscribed to your page cause i enjoyed your review so much.
Honestly. Wrestling has some of the best writing ever. When it comes to story telling
Bro what are you talking about lol. The Von Erich’s storylines were actually known for being more real from real life. A brother died then the next went on to fight in his honor etc. and this movie is completely based on there lives. Not some fake wrestling storyline
Zac Efron should be the next Wolverine after Hugh Jackman is done playing the character in the MCU and X-Men movies
I like this but tbh taron egerton is my first pick
@@SydneyVolpe I like that choice as well I just like Zac more
@@SydneyVolpedid you forget how jacked zac got for this movie he’s up next for wolverine
This is during the era of World Class Championship Wrestling. This is the territory of Fritz Von Erich and his sons. This is the era of Harley Race, Ric Flair, Bruiser Brody, Jerry Lawler, Kamala, The Missing Link and The Fabulous Freebirds. Rest in Peace Texas Tornado. The Iron Claw film shows the hardships and tragedies of the Von Erich family.
One of my favorite movies of the year. When the credits started to roll, I literally started crying. Not just tearing up - but literal crying. I don't think that's ever happened to me in the theater before. Such an amazing, powerful film. I couldn't recommend it enough
When I was watching the movie and David and Kevin had the conversation about David going to Japan, in my head I went, " oh no."
The foreshadowing was so gut wrenching with a couple of things😭
I remember watching David’s match as a kid and thinking this man is not well. It was alarming. Then he quickly died soon after
A young little Sydney bobbing her head to Rush is something I can't unsee.
😭 you can thank my dad for that
This story had to be told and I’m glad it was…
If it were up to me, Zac Efron would be nominated for Best Actor and the ensemble would be nominated at the SAGs. But, wow - a truly emotional rollercoaster that left me with a pool of tears. I recently finalized my top 10 of the year and this was so, so close to cracking the list.
I like the way you think👀 yeah it’s close for me too!!
I think it's time Zac gets some credit for how talented he is. Come people HSM was 17 years ago. OMG it's almost 20 years old. I remember when my daughter made me watch HSM. She was 10. Perfect age. My musical that came out when I was 10 was GREASE. When we finished watching HSM I turned to my daughter and said. "That Kid's going to be a big Star."
I don’t know a lot about professional wrestling or the Von Erich family, was curious when saw the production stills and cast. After I saw the trailer, I was immediately excited and skyrocketed to one of my most anticipated films for the rest of the year. Hoping to see this before the year ends and hope it’s a great and engaging drama. Great review as always, Sydney!
Watch the dark side of the ring episode on the story
I can attest that their re-creation of the Sportatorium looks pretty much exactly like the real Sportatorium did. Very good attention to the smallest of details.
Ya after the movie the wrestler I think we all realized how serious and emotional these stories can be, and this specific story is the mother of them all
Awesome review. I’ve followed you for a while on LB but never seen your vids and I wholeheartedly agreed with your review, and I also saw wonka right before. The ending scene you referenced could’ve easily been an eyeroller but it paid off was definitely a tearjerker. Also Society of the snow is top 5 of 2023!!!!!
Stone Cold Steve Austin said the Von Erichs were a big inspiration for him wanting to become a professional wrestler.
God bless the Von Erichs
Im from Dallas, and i went to the Sporturium many times as a teenager,so this Film really hit me hard, emotionally and i was very intuned to every angle of this film,i encourage everyone go see this film, young & old
After each death, my crying got progressively worst. It started with a tear drop coming out of the side of my eye, to by the end I was practically dry heaving
Thank you for your dynamic review . You said what I was trying to convey to my friends! Very interesting story but also so sad & tragic !
Yes exactly! Thanks for watching🙌🏼
i'm from dallas i'm seeing it thurday night. i can't wait!
Wooo hope you like it!!
Seeing this over the weekend!! Great review ‼️‼️
Thanks Spencer!! Hope you love it
As a huge wrestling fan man I can't wait to watch this
Ooo I’d be so curious to hear your thoughts then!!
Great review, Darling 👏
Oscar nom for Zach
Can't wait to see this movie, I heard this was really good. Great review.
If anyone is intresting in seeing a good documentary on the real/ true story of this film. Dark side of the ring , episode 4. It was done by vice. And is very good. I cant wait to watch this film.
I went in knowing nothing about the movie but the name. Unbelievable acting by everyone. Zac Efron was sooooo good. I hope the popularity of this movie doesn’t keep it from getting Oscars. It is beyond sad but an incredible movie. It sure educated me on this sport. It should be 5 out of 5
Great review! I’m having issues reviewing wonka as well lol
Personally this was my favorite movie from 2023
This video is a true work of art. Masterful!
Such a emotional review
Can’t wait to see it!
It gets more tragic in the relationship between Kevin and Fritz.
I cant wait to watch this i been waiting a long time
Can't wait to watch this
I am a 36-year-old massive professional wrestling van. I've always heard and known about the story of von Eric's. This is one of my most anticipated movies of the year not because I'm a wrestling fan but just because I wanted to see how they told the story of the family. The father for his era was one of the biggest wrestling stars in Texas and then bought into one of the smaller territories where you either started your career or that's where you would go when you finished up your career. It's not a place you went to to make money but when his son's got involved they turned into one of the top companies in the country. To the point where when wrestling went national and the mid 80s WCCW is one of the companies that could have went national but the father did not have the vision for national TV. The tragedy about that family experienced in nine years from 84 to 93 is absolutely stunning. And I think that's what makes it a story that fits for the big screen or maybe it would have been better as a miniseries.
Side note I'm glad they picked Tom Sawyer by Rush because that is the song legitimately that the brothers came to the ring too. Because back then you could use license music so they did and Tom Sawyer was the von Eric Brothers entrance music so it fits
Oh wow i didn’t know they actually used that song!! The more you know! I hope you love the film i can tell it means a lot to you, I’d be curious to hear your thoughts as a fan!
@@SydneyVolpe My biggest concern about seeing the movie is I know so much about the story I hope that doesn't affect my viewing experience. But we will see. Whenever I'm able to see the movie I will come back and share my thoughts
Tom Sawyer was actually only Kerry's entrance music. Kevin's entrance music was Stanglehold by Ted Nugent and David's was Texas When I Die by Tanya Tucker. I can't wait to watch the movie I hope you enjoy it as well.
Wonderful review!
Thanks so much for watching!!🙏🏼
I hope it's at least a dark horse for best picture and Zac Efron can finally get his flowers.
I'm hyped to see the movie because all the reviews are really good, but I feel like the story of the Von Erich's would have been better told in a series. A movie format just isn't enough to encapsulate all that happened.
Looking forward to this one.... Not sure when its out here in the UK
Tom Sawyer was Kerry's ring entrance song.
Yeah I remember them back in the day. I was a big NWA fan and start watch Texas wrestling after Ric Flair vs. Kerry Von Erich...R.I.P. gentlemen
Wow what a movie. Not what i expected at all.
I grew up watching the Von Erich family wrestling & remember all of them. In fact I recall seeing David look unwell prior to him going to Japan. But this movie made me mad that they totally cut out Chris. They even eliminated him from the family portrait in the film. People argue well he & Mike were the same. No they were not. Mike was like David; Chris like Kerry. Chris was an individual who had severe health issues that greatly impacted him. Suicide did not make him like Mike. People wonder why folks choose suicide. Well this film made Chris … forgotten. Just totally wiped his existence away
I agree. If you are going to tell the story, do it right. Chris played an essential role.
I'm angry about this omission
I am so hype for this HYPE HYPE. I also finished the bear so excited to see more of Jeremy Allen white and Zack God Efron.
Lets gooo
Kerry didnt die til after his WWE run in the early 90s, after WCCW, not sure if they covered it, but it was very cool that he got to win the Intercontinental Title (secretly with) only one real foot before passing away. He had a decent run before more tragedy struck.
I am surprised this movie hasn’t got much love from critics in terms of award recognition. I know the screeners were late but hoping they get Oscar love. This movie was incredible, entertaining, heartbreaking, & has an ending that will make you lose yourself in tears.
@ Sydney would you put Zac Efron as a Best Actor Nomination?
And would you squeeze in Iron Claw in the Oscar 10?
Their story is so sad the dark side of the ring episode also made me sad you just want to give Kevin a hug during his interview on dark side of the ring
almost to 10k subs!
Chugging along!!
I had to pleasure of meeting Kerry Von Erich one day at the store. He was so super sweet and alittle 'friendly', which I didn't mind at all!!!! Because he was my favorite Von Erich!!
Kevin said at the movie premier here in the Dallas area, that is was a very good movie. And that he was very proud of it!
I'm looking forward to seeing this movie.
Also!!! Kerry used 'Tom Sawyer' as his intro walking up to the wrestling ring!!
I grew up in Texas. These guys were superstars. My mom liked Kevin's legs.
I’m excited to see it on Christmas Day and this is already one of my favorite reviews. Ur the best Sydney ❤️

I'm excited to watch this film, many are saying it’s a masterpiece. I'm a wrestling fan and to me this looks incredible and I'll definitely buy this movie when it comes out.
Love your reviews, Syd! Didn't really care much for this one, but after watching this I'll give it a shot! Along with Society of the Snow!
Yayyy i truly hope you love them, thanks for watching! It’s such a great time of year for movies!
The surreal scene made me cry too lol. But I dont think it was supposed to be real honestly... I think it was just supposed to be what Kevin was thinking in that moment.
Darkside of the ring did a good series on the Von Erich’s family.
Best needledrop of the year
Great review!
Thanks sm for watching!!

Great review. Can't wait to see the movie! Have see "Warrior"(2011) with Tom Hardy & Nick Nolte? Great Sport movie (based on a true story) about 2 Brothers & a Father. Nick Nolte's acting is good it makes you feel sick. If you want to see a really bizarre true life Story! "Stander"(2002). Thomas Jane plays Andre Stander, an 80s South African Police Captain. If this Story was not true you would think the movie was so ridiculous that no way someone could that?! But it's true! I had to watch a Documentary on Andre Stander after I saw the movie to see how much was true, and it was very accurate. Thomas Jane does a good South African accent to. He's alway been underrated.
They cut Chris Von Erich for the reasons you said, but it makes the tribute to the fallen brothers at the end of the movie seem like a tribute to the characters not the brothers.
I love movies- My top 5 movie reviewers are
Jeremy Jahns, Stuckman, Fish Jelly, Double Toasted and this girl Sydney Volpe
Aw I’m so honored to be mentioned in this list!!
I am going in cold. I was a WWE fan and had only maybe seen them once or heard of them, so I know nothing. I like how she was raw and real and authentic in this review by brushing off another movie for this one. I have no beef with the other movie, but it strikes me as honest and getting real the way she did it. I will see Iron Claw. I also wanna see Bikeriders, but gotta say, this Iron Claw has a flow about it. The casting and just that it fits Zac so well, because I was never into him as an actor, but here, the role clicks for him big time.
Personally, I would advise to watch the movie blind. I feel knowing the true story, you can get nitpicky (I do) and you shouldn’t because the film truly is a great film, great acting and just enjoyable. I believe once watching the movie, if you truly enjoyed the story to then dive into the documentary. As a wrestling film goes, I think it’s by far the best film for the wider audience although if you’re a major fan you may prefer The Wrestler (2009). Regardless I recommend everyone to go see it, it’s a sad story but a good story to see presented on the big screen
This was on my list of most anticipated movies in 2023... But I have to wait another 2 months to watch it because the UK has a February release date 😭
I'm watching it tonight
Amazing hope you enjoy!!
Nice review, the trailers looked pretty good for this movie. I just watched Godzilla Minus One. It's such a good movie. I hope you review Aquaman 2.
