A few years ago we added a primary bath & a walk-in closet to our bedroom. We have a small 2 bedroom house but it was a huge improvement for us for storage & privacy. It also gave us the best bang for the buck on home value having 2 baths. It’s now perfect for us.

Great video, Catherine. There is nothing wrong with wanting more space for your family and more storage. You do what's best for you. I'm in CA, where it is so expensive for everything. When we bought our condo, it was supposed to be our 5 year home. We are still here 19 years later. We only have 1 kid, so it's fine, and it's almost paid for. We do have 2 bathrooms and a garage, so that helps a lot. Hope you have a great week ❤

We've had a similar issue with space! I recommend the vacuum bags for spare sheets and winter clothes, because they really do go flat like in the commercials, and we store our out-of-season clothes in a bin in the attic (although we only have two seasons for the most part).

When you think about it, how much space do you really need? How much STUFF do you need? My family of 7 lived in a 1350 Sq ft home with a basement. I shared a small bedroom with two of my sisters and the other two were in the other bedroom and my parents were in the last one. I had a 3rd of a closet and 4 drawers for my clothes. We didn't have a TON of toys but we had plenty of books, art supplies, etc. Did lots of things as a family. Just something to think about. A lot can be minimized and really, not every child needs their own room. You're doing great! Just keep at it. Think hard before you spend a lot of money.

I agree with you! My best friend grew up in a 3 BR/1 Bath house - about 1200sf. She and her 2 sisters in 1 room, her 3 brothers in another room and parents in a room.
My sister and I grew up in about same size house with 1 bathroom. You learn how to share and you also learn to take a quick shower!! lol. We did lots of coloring, reading books and played board games. We were outside most of the time, playing, riding bikes, roller skating. We made up games to play. All of the kids were very resourceful! We never knew we didn’t have a big house as we thought we did. We also didn’t have many clothes-not necessary because you do laundry. Same with shoes-school shoes, play shoes, Sunday shoes. Of course, we got our shoes repaired if we could as it was cheaper to do that than buy new ones. I have found that as an adult “things” own you not the other way around. The more you have, the more time to take care of. Lessons learned over time…

Most definitely use the dresser for what you want. Most of my clothes are on hangers. Only leggings, shorts, socks and underwear in the dresser. I store all kinds of things in the remaining drawers. It is so much easier to hang clothes than to fold them and they don’t get wrinkled 😊

I have a jelly cabinet in the dining room that I keep our meds in. The top shelf is the designated area. I have three sets of stackable bins that clip together. Each set has three sections (trays), that I got from Menards. Myself, my daughter, and my husband each get one section. Another bin set is separated into gut, allergy, and other, and the other bin set is band aids and topical ointments. And I have a turntable that holds things like headache pill bottles and vitamins. It works really well for us. And makes it easy when we are filling the weeks pill dispenser. No more sorting thru everyone's meds to find your own.

We've talked about selling and moving to something smaller it is only 2 of us a our dog but will home prices that are out of control in our area its not happening anytime soon. But I have been on a declutter journey so when we are ready we won't have as much to get rid of then. I think adding an addition would be great and maybe this would become your forever home. I just know this home isn't ours cause we need something smaller. We don't use 1/2 the space in our home we've never had kids but when we bought this home it worked for us but now I just want smaller. I love your declutter journey and you are so really true and honest

I love your closet door storage idea😊 I just bought my new home at the end of June and it’s bigger than my last home but storage is awful. I had a ton of space to store stuff but now only one closet per room and a linen closet and coat closet. But I’ve decided to down size to fit the storage that I have. I will still have toys. I have 3 grand daughters and I’m a grandma that love toys for the girls. In Arizona we have no basement😮.

You need to do what’s best for you. We lived in the smallest 2 bedroom, 1 bath Georgian for 15 years. We were bursting at the seams after my second son was born. Our one bathroom was upstairs and very small and inconvenient. I told my husband either we add on or move. We moved to a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house. Now that both of my sons are gone and married, we have a guest bedroom and I have a sewing room!

Hi Catherine you are super inspiring!! I guess regarding the kids clothes to cut back on folding spending and storing since they frequently tear rip and stain clothes I’d shop for second hand I know it’s not as cute all the time but your kids are adorable I tend to notice the eye pleasing ideas for the little ones cartoons and such, if I could start over with my 33 and 28 I’d shop more mindfully and use with everything the 1 in one 1 rule at all time and stay away from duplicates one specific genre at a time, I hope you get your extra linen closets and bathroom and I think one more bedroom, not sure. Keep us updated with your construction plans soooo excited for you.

I have a dresser that I put all of my projects and blankets in. All of my clothes are either hung in the closet or folded neatly on the top shelf of the closet. Because of the way I store my clothes I have decluttered so much clothing I wasn't wearing because I could see it and I share a closet with my husband who of course needs room for his clothes as well.

I also have changed my buying habits - Not sure where stuff comes from...lol. My family is probably tired of my decluttering and moving things around. But that won't stop me. We don’t really have a medicine cabinet per se, but we keep a bottle of ibuprofen on the top shelf of our closet for like, the one time a year that we need it 😅 all our other herbals and supplements I keep in the kitchen! It’s just easier and more accessible for the whole family. We don’t have a huge space either and not a lot of closet space and no pantry, so we have to be creative. Thanks for another motivating video!

I didn’t realize you live in New England. I was born in Massachusetts. I am 73 and I am still here.😊 I concur we need our four seasons worth of clothes😮 good, bad and indifferent. I think that’s a good idea putting on the addition and even when your kids are grown, you’re only putting on a small addition so you will still be able to be comfortable. All of our children and grandchildren are all grown. My husband passed away in 2014 and I own a three-story townhouse, I have no intention of moving. I have two bathrooms. I have a guest room. I have a basement that was done over that used to be our family room but now I don’t use it at all and I have a separate laundry room downstairs. I know you will come to make the right decision. My husband and I downsize to this home in 2004, I have wonderful neighbors. One of my daughters lives 10 minutes away. It’s very safe neighborhood. I love New England.

I never used baby oil on my kids, it terries me as it is so dangerous if they get ahold of it. I like that you have it on the top shelf, I did not have shelves that high my my daughter was younger.
My pre-teen daughter and I will have to try Lume.
I totally get where you are with decluttering. I feel like I'm on top of it, but at the same time, I feel like I want to get rid of more. I really struggle go8ng through my clothes. I don't have alot, but I don't like alot of what I have and don't know what to get rid of and what not to. We have always had 1 bathroom and I'm with you, it is a struggle, especially as the kids get older, especially with having girls lol I LOVE when you share heart to hearts. It helps us connect to you and see you as "one of us", if that makes sense. You didn't come across as being ungrateful at all.

It makes me really sad to realise how judgmental society we have become. Most creators feel like they have to explain themselves why they need bigger space for their family, put out disclaimers that it doesn't mean the are not grateful for what they already have. People are able to have opinions even on where someone else stores their clothes and toys. It's sad. On the other hand maybe society has always been like that and social media have just given us means to express our attitude "been everywhere, seen everything, know everything best" attitude better ;).

I wouldn’t recommend storing books in a dresser. You will need to be careful how much weight is in each drawer as it can overload it and cause it to not function right over time. I got a used dresser from someone and they stored books in the bottom drawer. We ended up getting rid of the dresser soon after because the drawer basically broke from the weight.
