Of the many version available to us now on RUclips, none compares to this 2003 performance, because it features the exquisite playing of one of the principals of the Berlin Philharmonic, the great oboist Albrecht Meyer. Boulez is the perfect conductor here, restrained and tender when Ravel's writing requires it. This is deeply felt music, and is best played simply.

I have a clear memory from about 20 years ago. I was walking and listening to my Walkman during Winter, and this piece started. At that moment snowflakes started to fall. It was so perfect that I had to find a place to sit until the entire piece had played. ❤️

I remember one old beautiful memory. There was the tomb of my father’s ancestors on the top of small hill.
Beside the tomb, there was a cherry tree. Japanese had a custom to have a party seeing cherry blossoms with their dead ancestors.
I was two or three years old then. Cherry blossom petals were dancing in the wind. My relatives of about 15 persons brought hand-made lunch boxes there and enjoyed an impromptu singing or dancing. My brother and cousins played to roll down the slope of the hill. I was afraid that they would get hurt and kept an eye on them grasping my mother’s hand.
The turning sounds of clarinet of “Le Tombeau de Couperin” reminds me of the scene.

@@Kiarinadia Thank you very much. Beautiful memories remain inside us. This prelude reminds me of that feeling of the scene…..And most of the relatives including my big brother are dead(in the grave). There is a wonder to coexist with them in this music for me.

We can be reasonably confident that this masterful Boulez conducting would be approved by Ravel himself. Ravel composed the four tone poems to capture the memory and melancholy of losing four guy friends in the senseless trench warfare of WWI. Millions of young men all over Europe never returned home from that wasteful catastrophe.

lots of people talk about the superstar oboe player but all of the reed players are equally great. he just moves his head around more when he plays. very common in music - people impressed by dramatic presentation rather than content. don't mean to criticize - everything about this is great, most of all boulez's conducting and interpretation.

Prelude and rigaudon too slow and too much detailed, we hear all the solos instead of an homogeneous orchestra. However middle section of rigaudon and 2 central pieces are very well rendered. Very interesting version indeed
