  • In this video we'll do simple watercolor exercises to practice fur mark making.
If you want to learn how to paint a cat, a dog, or any animal, this is the easiest way to paint fur with watercolor. If you ever wanted an achievable watercolor workout that allows you to practice the following technical skills all in one this is a great way to practice! We'll look at...
    Brushstrokes
    Wet-on-dry
    Wet-on-wet
    Timing
    Softening and Blending
    Painting long fur
    Painting short fur
How to paint in layers to build texture, color, and value
It's great fun, quick to do, and seems like nothing more than quick doodles. But in this video I will show you the importance of practicing like this, and how it helps you to improve your technique in the areas above.
If you are a beginner and want to paint dreamy yet realistic animals (and sometimes other things) here are some of my thoughts for you... / 82080110

The black and white long-haired cat, Felix, is like the beautiful cat I once owned. His name was also Felixe, and his mum was what we in England call a Torteshell cat, much like the one in your painting.

Good informative video, Rachel! Honestly, it's the first time I've seen an instructor share so much info about brush technique, which is so important to know!! I think some people have no idea you can actually use the side of the brush or smash it to make great marks. I have a lot of old brushes that I've collected over the years, I think I may give some of them haircuts to see what I can create!!! lol ♥

Thanks Gail! Yes, I've cut so many brushes, scrubbed them on concrete, boiled plastic ones, etc etc to get great texture - I'm like that evil kid in Toy Story who maimed his toys for pleasure haha

I've got a lot of old brushes too. I've considered doing things to them, trim them up like the Rake, be easy to do. Mostly, I've just used them for mixing. Perhaps I'll get out the exacto knives and trim a few up. 😊

      Thank you, I thought so.
I looked and I only saw a size 6 sold individually. I think I would prefer the 8.
I'm sure they have them, I will continue to look. Ty

This is amazing! How did you discover the flexibility of a bamboo brush? Who knew you could do fur texture with it? I am impressed!
