Free trial = 2 months maybe? Oops! Just noticed it's from a year ago Lol! I can comment on RUclips now! I must have changed something in my settings today. (I'll never figure this phone out)
This is the best watercolour background "tutorial" that I have watched until now. You explained everything so clearly and concisely. Thank you for taking the time to also demonstrate what you were explaining by showing us how you had painted backgrounds on your own paintings. I, too, have been reluctant to paint backgrounds on my paintings for fear I would ruin them but now I'm excited to give these a try! Thanks again for the wonderful video. I'm so happy the RUclips algorithm lead me to your channel and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!
Not only do you explain techniques and what you don't want, you clearly demonstrate them which is so essential. I am inexperienced and everyone has a different idea in their head. If you actually show what you are talking about everyone is on same page. Best instructor ever!!!!
Louise, your tutorials are the only ones where I've found the answers to my doubts on watercolor. You really think in our struggles with this amazing art when you prepare the tutorials that, by the way, are so well illustrated and explained. Thank you. I also love the tone and softness of your voice: peaceful and without stress.
I love that you leave the bloopers in your video. It is great when you can laugh at yourself. Thank you for putting these amazing background instruction out here for us.
Louise you are such a good teacher! Love, Love all your art work! This was a very good tutorial on how to do backgrounds! I really found it helpful! Thank you!
Fantastic video tutorial, thanks for the work you put in to show us everything. I’m new and I appreciate your time. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your chrysanthemum, and will attempt to paint one like it. Also you look so cute- makeup is gorgeous and your hair is beautiful.
Louise, thank you for the very educational video. I am new to watercolor and your video was very helpful on avoiding hard lines, not fussing and how to paint with various states of paper wetness. Your video is also good with having the sound at a good level and sharing how to avoid mistakes. It is my favorite video to date.
Hi this is the first time I've watched your videos after googling backgrounds for watercolor painting. Loved it and immediately subscribed. As a bonus love the bloopers too! Think you should paint the adorable little bird having a bath ☺️❤️ may I add your very mindful of your viewers. Thankyou.
So helpful! I got hard edges when I work on a large background all at once! They dry up fast!!! I will definitely try your method of working one area at a time
Your paintings are just amazing and truly inspire me. Your explanations are clear and seem so easy to follow. Once I attain a few more watercolor skills I'll be taking some of your classes on Patreon.
I really needed this tutorial from you. I found myself stuck having felt I messed up the background on a current watercolor with a Toucan. I believe the suggestions you shared for the chrysanthemum painting will salvage my painting. Thank you!🙏🏼🙌🏼👏🏼💯
Just discovered your channel. Thank you this was tremendous tutorial. I have been struggling with hard edges in large back ground washes. Now I know why! Cheers form Canada
I knew that I'd seen purposeful blooms somewhere !! Trying to do a consistent shape, monochromatic, bloom within a bloom background. Maybe "purposeful blooms" is a good title. Having so much fun making one "goof" after another. Thanks for being here.
Oh my gosh! What a breath of fresh air you are! Love your vids every week. I’m getting some absolutely great tutoring from you. One thing I would love to see is how you would tackle a primarily black subject like a dog or cat. I’m struggling with this. I’m trying to paint a black German Shepard dog. How to paint black shadow & light. Help Louise 😩
You are my favorite watercolor teacher, i love 😘 it..... Easy as usual, besides i practice my English 😊.. I am María González, from Costa Rica 🇨🇷 in Central América 🌎 🌎 Thank you so much ‼️‼️‼️🌻🌿🌻🌿🌻🌿🌻🌿🌻🌿🌻🌿🌻🌿🌻
Working on a painting now and am feeling as you shared early in the video...thinking I will ruin what I have completed. You have inspired me, so will try one of your ideas! Thank you so much.
I enjoy your channel very much. I am new to art and I too am nervous about backgrounds. I worked very hard on a painting and was not going to put a background on it but I did and way over worked it and it took over the painting. I’m going to try some of your thoughts on doing a background it was very helpful. I need to trust myself more. THANKS 🙏🏼
Your paintings are beautiful, free flowing and fresh. I really appreciated your explanations and demos of backgrounds, especially since I struggle with them. I overwork them and they look dull, ruining the subject I’m painting. Thank you!
Louise, you and I share the exact fears and implementations regarding backgrounds 💜 I like that you make your choices clear as far as deciding how and when to paint a background, that it is obviously never a wrong choice to do whatever makes you happy at the moment for a particular painting, thank you so much for sharing this video, and as always, your paintings are beautiful 💞😎🎨
Louise - you are so very talented! there are few people I really admire where W/C is concerned and you come right at the top: I learn so much from you, so thank you! Did you teach yourself to paint?
Louise!!! , I will never get tired of thanking you for all the knowledge you give for the ones who loves this amazing technique !!! You have been such an inspiration for me! Thank you, thank you so much!
As always really good tips. I am finding it difficult to get the good brush control necessary to do the background without masking fluid so I use that. I also did a background using wet on wet with adding salt thst gave a nice effect too. Thanks Louise.
Ohhh! I just love love love all your tutorials! Your precision, your calmness, your technic and the way you teach! And how You make me laugh at the end of your episodes! You are wonderfull and it makes me love You and your personality even more and more.... big hug!
I for whatever the reason found painting backgrounds was the hardest part of any painting I was doing. I used to stress if I didn't catch every detail. I have since learned to keep it simple and/or to suggest them. A lesson I was reminded of in your last tutorial and this one.
I've just watched 3 of your videos and they're great. Just when I have a question in my mind about something you've said, in the the next sentence it gets answered. I've been practicing along at the same time, and I think I'm ready to paint a better background for my Kingfisher. My first attempt is not nice (done before watching your videos) and will be watered down and lifted out a bit, hopefully what I do next will be better!
Thank you for the painted background demos and info. I love the bloopers/outtakes at the end! I can’t imagine the time and editing it must take to bring us a finished tutorial.
Thank you! That is amazing help because I have been working on different skies and I think you just solved it for me and I to am fighting with myself right now because I’m going to do a hummingbird but I don’t know if I want to do the swipes of paint or if I want to do a colorful light wash in the background...... decisions decisions 😩😁
I am starting to use an art journal for information I've learned, and it's usually something from your channel. Thank you so much for your time and sharing your wisdom...... Shana
This was sooooo helpful! I am reintroducing myself to traditional watercolours. I haven't worked in this medium traditionally for years and am currently struggling with my backgrounds. Excellent ideas here. Thank-you.
I love watching your videos and watching you paint and explain. It’s zen like. I have a question about doing backgrounds with wet on wet. At 3:09 you explain so clearly that I now understand a hardline that you keep the paint away from the edge of the water. At 5:13 you show how you did the background on the gorgeous flower. As the flower isn’t wet and the water stops at the petal why does no hardline form there or did you keep a tiny bit of the paper dry between the petal and the background or is it because you are pulling the paint away from the petal - though maybe there is a hard edge from that and I just can’t see it on my iPad screen. Thanks for teaching.
This is the best video I've seen on Watercolor backgrounds. Thank you so much for making it!!! Could you tell what kind of paper you are using and what kind of orange tape you used to mask the edges of the sheet? The painter's tape I used lets all the paint come through if I get the sheet too wet. I have seen that you use two tapes, one on top of the other?
Thank you very much. I use otto washi tape to leave a border of white paper around the edge. It's low tack so it won't damage the paper. It will lift off if I use a hair dryer so I use some ordinary masking tape over the top to hold it firm.
I struggle with backgrounds too because i always feels that background can make or break the painting so it gets kinda burdensome to find the right background. Thank you very much Louise

I used the clingfilm method on an elephant I was painting and painted the background simply! That worked!
Excellent! Thank you!
