I'm so glad to see comparisons with actual voice overs telling us your opinion and what you're actually seeing. There are so many people doing comparison videos like this and just dumping a bunch of footage on the viewer and saying nothing. It's crazy, people seem so afraid to just share their opinion.
I know how much effort it takes to just capture something let alone make a video so I can’t really complain. But I wanted to spend some time using the 5x. It didn’t make sense for me to just get a video out as fast as I could
I'm a retro speedrunner, meaning I play a lot of different retro games on different consoles. The 5X Pro would massively simplify my current setup (especially because of my non-modded NES). And that alone is an upgrade. Byt the 300$ pricepoint is hard to justify unless I flip both my OSSC and current og RetroTINK.
It makes sense if you run a variety of consoles, but if you mainly use the NES, an NESRGB mod for your NES might simplify some things. But considering the cost of an NESRGB mod (and getting someone to install it) might cost a few hundred dollars, the 5x might still make sense

I really liked my OSSC and Framemeister. Framemeister was the introduction and did a great job, even used FBX profiles but back in the day, I opted for OSSC because I was mainly under the misundering the Chrono Cross problem was fixed and it really wasn't. Although it was better. OSSC does have a lot of great features but I was tired of every firmware update, redoing profiles and spending more time researching FBX's settings and then tweaking to my TV to look awesome. I love the fact the RT5x basically does it all for you. Plus Mike is a really awesome dude to his fans. I have no regrets owning an OSSC or Framemeister in the past but I also don't regret selling them either. At the end of the day, I really just want to sit and play a game. The amount of programming and features in the RT5x were well worth it to me. It's also curbed my hunt for a PVM or BVM because (at least in my area) it's a mortgage payment for something well over a decade old that I don't feel comfortable recapping in the future. Also, MM8 in 1440p and then down to 240p mode was such a nice addition, I ended up tweeting to Mike about. I do plan on building a 486 retro gaming machine soon (and maybe a Windows 98 gaming machine as well), so with that, I might need another OSSC for VGA output but that's down the line.
My OSSC is now 100% for arcade boards. It's just as well... - There aren't any resolution changes with arcade games. Or at least the ones I play. - Line 2x still works with every monitor, which also means the best, most authentic scanlines. - The OSSC gave me zero trouble with my arcade boards whereas the RT5X couldn't decide what sync it wanted from my HAS (buffered or regenerated). I never had that "curly image at the top" problem with the OSSC. - Only the OSSC has VGA input, and with the HAS also outputting VGA (HD15) with an add-on board, I'm theoretically getting less noise with VGA and a separate audio cable as opposed to the 8-pin mini DIN to SCART cable that I'd have to feed the RT5X. - The gscartsw creator says superguns are risky and unsupported, while the HAS creator says the HAS is safe with gscartsw because the HAS attenuates audio and only does TTL sync if you want it to... which I do, so I can output to HD15; the OSSC actually expects TTL sync on the VGA port if the VGA source is RGB. By keeping the OSSC strictly for arcade PCBs, I'm sidestepping that risk of damaging my equipment altogether. ... Okay, so the RT5X still needs modes for PSP output and GBI Interface, but I have to imagine those are coming real soon.
Don't forget to use the cross scanline feature! I had Marqs add that because of how important it is to retain a crt's line count on the image. It's done so many wonders to games that really stand out with it being active.
I just bought a 5X, "upgrading" from the OSSC. Only problem is I am either going to have to still use the OSSC for my Dreamcast or "downgrade" to SCART or wait to get the component cables from RGC when they are released, if ever.
You should be able to get a VGA/RGBHV to RGBS Cable that uses a sync circuit to combine HV signals into an S sync signal that would be compatible with the Retrotink 5x
Thank you for the extensive comparision between consoles and going in depth about some of the seetings. I myself run PS2 and PSP exclusively through a newly bought OSSC and was wondering if I should return it and go for a 5x instead. But with the 200€ price difference and the barely noticeable differences it made my decision a lot easier and I'll be sticking to my OSSC. The interlacing can apparently be worked around with a FreeMCBoot softmod on the PS2 to have 480p be the standard output signal. That's what I'll be going with in the future.
Good video! As a current OSSC owner I'm not entirely sold on the Retrotink 5X although I think it does wonders for PS2 games. I was hoping you'd show more of the modes for SNES footage besides 5X. I do understand 5X being the "ideal" mode, but for games, 5X crops too much information from the top and bottom and that's a deal breaker for me. On top of that, the 256 mode for SNES stretches the 4:3 aspect ratio a bit more which makes it feel "inauthentic" to me. Just my own opinion on it. Ultimately, I'm looking for something super versatile that lets me capture RGB SNES footage at the sharpest, highest quality while maintaining accuracy as well, and since the OSSC doesn't play well with the Magewell, and the Retrotink stretches the 4:3 too much in 256 mode, part of me is just thinking of going the Datapath capture card & SCART to DVI route for capturing SNES footage in 240p and scaling that to 4K to my heart's content.
Yea, that was actually something I forgot to mention about the 5X, currently you only get 4:3 aspect ratio and no options for 8:7. It's possible it could be added with a firmware update
probably going to just keep my OSSC as i have no problem with it, nor have a problem with tweaking it every now and then. i’ll honestly wait it out and see how the pro compares to the 5x whenever there is info on it, also where did you get your OSSC case lol, i need one for the dust
I could get a brand new Super Nt 'Classic' for around $1300 CAD off eBay, or an SNES(1CHIP) Console bundle, HD Retrovision Component Cables & a RetroTink 5X Pro for just under $900. I don't plan on using the RT5X Pro for anything beyond the 8-16 bit consoles, like Saturn and on wards, so 240p is pretty much the name of the game. All displayed on a smaller QD-OLED display, like the 55" S90C. :P
The only place I recommend buying a new OSSC is from Video Game Perfection, since they provide support for the product: videogameperfection.com/products/open-source-scan-converter/ However you may be able to get them used on eBay. (Please don't buy a new one from eBay)
Nice video. Good breakdown and comparison head-to-head with the OSSC. A shame your Magewell capture card couldn't get 1440p from the RetroTINK 5x, since i just got that card myself.
I host tournaments with couple of people and we got OSSC to capture imager from out arcade cabinet and oh boy we got Virtua Fighter 3tb to work with it. Almost a miracle cause it never works with anything so I still think OSSC has a place but it's for really specific things and specific games.
Good comparison! I’m curious about your OSSC SNES footage. It looks a bit off to me. Are you sure the phase is set properly? It’s hard to tell with Donkey Kong, though.
Agreed, my SNES looks amazing on OSSC, identical to the 5x footage shown here. Also, regarding de-jitter on SNES - I've found that whatever voultar does differently for his SNES Jr RGB upgrade mod vs. other RGB mods for the SNES absolutely has FAR fewer sync issues, and voultar's mod also lets me use the cheapest RGB scart cable with ZERO issues while the same cable using a different SNES RGB mod causes all sorts of hot and heavy video glitch action.
O_O Where'd you get that OSSC custom case from? Not too fond of the colour but its heads and tails better than the open plexiglass design of the original.
You spoke a lot about your modded consoles but does this also work with non nodded consoles like Sega Saturn? That's main what consoles I'd want it for. That and maybe Dreamcast, Genesis and SNES. All non modded. Let me know. Thanks! Sounds awesome and much better than the OSSC.
@@dubesinhower Thanks! One more question. Should I get the 2X SCART or the 5X? Is the fact it's three times the price worth it in terms of quality on my Sony 1080p LCD TV or should I just get the 2x?
Quick question. With my SNES I can't capture it on x5 on the OSSC without a dejitter mod. With the Retrotink x5 will the dejitter mod be needed? I think is not Thanks!
Thanks man. I've been wondering if the 5x would be worth it over my XRGB Mini and it sounds like it handles resolution changes perfectly where as the XRGB Mini struggles with it. 🤘
Nice work. Take this methodology and spread it across 4 random lcds. My experience is the retrotink5x goes 4 for 4, the ossc goes 2 for 4. Love my ossc but it’s not even in the same ballpark as the tink5x.
What did you mean most people are going to be getting component cables? Are there component cables being produced that can replace SCART cables? I'm thinking of getting a Retrotink 5x when the new batch arrives and I'm already prepping to get the necessary custom-made SCART cables.
I wish the 5x had a way of running vga and cross scanlines for that really authentic crt look, but I guess everyone has their preference. Using ossc with pc and the newer game consoles shows that even the scanline features are more then preserving the more native aspects that often get replaced by games that don't support them, or go for that "pixel art" look.
So the OSSC has better scanline options than RetroTINK? I'm looking for a way to add scanlines to the Switch for retro games like the Turok and Doom games, and am trying to decide between the OSSC and the RetroTINK 2X Pro Multi-Format (both are the same price with similar features). So far it's seeming like most people prefer the OSSC for scanlines.
@@kdkseven Yeah vga will give you an input and all you have to add is an adaptor. I tested a onn brand from walmart awhile back side by side with native hdmi and it produced the best RGB 4:4:4 without black crush, but you still need something to split the audio, or check shmups forum for other suggestions. I pushed for cross scanlines to be included as they're native to all crts and have a line count. Even if matching scanlines don't work, vertical will produce the 480p and over image.
Good video as always. I do really like what the RetroTINK 5x brings to the table and I think it is a good product for what it is. I just wish you and the the other people making videos about it would at least bring up in these videos that the OSSC Pro is going to be released later this year and that it plans to fix the majority of the issues with the old model when comparing the RetroTINK to the original OSSC.
Unless you have an issue with the OSSC, it's still very capable. There will be at least two other scalers coming out (OSSC Pro and PixelFX Morph), so if you're on the fence, I would wait until we get more news about them
Hey mate, could you help me out please? I connected the Retrotink 5x pro correctly with the AV adaptor to a PAL PS2 + 4K HDMI TV. I switch to 1080p resolution on the device with RR Type 4 running on the PS2 and looking like complete trash. Like no improvement AT ALL. What could be the issue? Could component cables be the solution? Idk cause I believe something's wrong. Do you have an idea? :(
During the first two minutes you say the phrase "NES RGB modded NES"... I understand what you mean, but it's not ambiguous to just say "RGB modded NES" and sounds better, IMO.
I understand your frustration. It looks bad when I make a video and nobody can buy the thing from the video. Trust me, I wish I could do something about it
I made this point on Twitter earlier this year and it was not received well lol. Most mod creators only have one or two people and do this in their free time. Everyone said to leave them alone and don’t push them to make more mods. IMO the market is bigger than they realize, but they don’t want to take the risk of sitting on inventory that won’t sell
Ive been using the OSSC through scart on all my applicable consoles that don't have hdmi mods. I'll wait until the ossc pro comes out to upgrade. I keep watching comparison videos everytime they pop up I guess youtube compression and the capturing software can't show me the true differnce between the "1440p mode" the Tink outputs its so subtle unless all it does it just fill the screen auto? *I'd have to see it for myself other then that the automatic switching would be nice for the Saturn which I enjoy playing alot with friends.
Bob alternates fields every other frame, not "alternate every other image and display it" (9:50). It's kind of correct when you already know what's going on, but sounds very confusing when you don't. No offense, there really isn't an easy way to quickly explain interlaced video so, who cares ^-^
@@johndee759 I only know of resolution switching on 240p-480i games. I would think running a Tink 2x would be a nice companion and you can combine it, plus smoothing features to the ossc's cross scanline mode for that more realistic crt look.
@@voltz15 the only thing the ossc is bribing to the table is the vertical rotation of games and that is actually a big one. They say that the OSSC pro is really a pro device and will cost around $500 and most likely more due the supply shortage.
While price doesn't necessarily indicate a product is better if you're buying a $100 OSSC I would have to imagine it's a dirt cheap clone and not of the highest quality. A legit OSSC imported into the US is still currently $200+ which makes this a pretty close comparison imo.
@@bradfordblevins8310 ossc is the open source product, so the word "clone" isn't the most accurate here. For me personally, ossc costed near 75-80$ since I ordered the pcb manufacturing from China and was assembling it myself. It made the entire interface much better and the ADC settings can be optimised to get better colours.
How does the Retrotink 5X compare to raw straight to HDMI N64 UltraHDMI??
u gotta mess wit the FBX profiles to tune to ur console
HDRetrovision makes component cables for most popular systems. Dreamcast component should be on the way this year.
Things are up in the air about what the OSSC Pro will actually be. I’m sure we’ll hear a lot more about it when it comes out
Besides retrogaming, can the OSSC be used to hook a Laserdisc component output to a 24 inch TFT Monitor and create a suitable picture usind HDMI?
I don't see why not. I have a component switch connected to mine with 4 different component systems converted to hdmi
I am totally happy with my ossc, but now there is a feeling that it could be better 🤫 ahh noo 300 bucks. What should i do? I hate this feeling 😂
Unless you have an issue with the OSSC, it's still very capable. There will be at least two other scalers coming out (OSSC Pro and PixelFX Morph), so if you're on the fence, I would wait until we get more news about them
@@dubesinhower yeah thank you! I am still waiting for the ossc pro…we will see…Greetings 🙋🏻♂️
Hello what is the screen used for the test ?
I dunno that I've ever heard anyone say the PS1 looks better than the N64, but I guess everyone is allowed to have an opinion.
Can someone tell me the name of the NES game @ 2:33?
Cool case for the OSSC where did you get that?
I 3d printed it myself but it's designed by Laser Bear: www.laserbear.net/products/ossc-case
During the first two minutes you say the phrase "NES RGB modded NES"... I understand what you mean, but it's not ambiguous to just say "RGB modded NES" and sounds better, IMO.
I ordered my Retrotink5x in favor to replace my Retrotink2x classic to afford it
Doesn't the retrotink have input lag?
can you please name the nes and megadrive game shown?
Little Samson for the NES and Rocket Knight Adventures for the Genesis
nice review!
Thanks for watching!
The only problem with Retrotink is the lack of vga for Dreamcast
Except the Retrotink 5x is unobtainium, always out of stock :(
Supposedly restock happening this month. Hope it doesn't sell out within the first minute. Not sure how it was when it was released.
I purchased the 5x with my own money. I don’t receive any free products
@@mjskillz23 the only advice is can give is follow people on Twitter. I try to retweet when mod creators announce upcoming stock
What's your glasses prescription? At or above 5?
Bob alternates fields every other frame, not "alternate every other image and display it" (9:50). It's kind of correct when you already know what's going on, but sounds very confusing when you don't. No offense, there really isn't an easy way to quickly explain interlaced video so, who cares ^-^
Thanks for the better explanation!
Too bad the RetroTink didn’t have vga
I think someone’s working on an adapter, not sure about the details yet
TianFend designed an adapter: castlemaniagames.com/products/rondo-products-hd15-2-scart?ref=w9_zngec1o_
I think simplicity is the key. The ossc is really great but just too advanced to setup. I think would choose the 5x over the OSSC pro.
Oh definitely, and even if you get a good profile saved, there are still issues with the OSSC, like resolution switching
@@dubesinhower retrotink is the way to go. As you said just plug in play.
OSSC is so much cheaper though...
Vga would be nice…
More of a chicken sandwich kinda guy… but thanks for sharing. Hair 10/10
I am considering upgrading, but at the same time nobody wants to watch my ADD ass play retro games on real hardware maybe i should save my money
I'm sorry, but why are you trying to play tony hawk 3 on n64 haha
Lol IDK, something different
Scalines RGB 2x off
Scaler 2x off
Retro tink 2x pro
Pedir R$120.00 triste
Av2hdmi ruim cego pior 😣😥

Are we comparing 100$ product with 300$ product? From the 3x price it is already clear what is better.
And this also can't be called a "clone", but just an item assembled by open documentation, allowed by its creators
@@bradfordblevins8310 No you just got scammed paying 100$ extra for that 'clone' someone else assembled.
GenX gamers= i finally got an OSSC 7.1 as a surprise gift from wife.
~Reason= i no longer want to have the 55" Samsung 1080p Component FlatPanel
in The Game Cave.. I thre away the SOny Trintron Wega(180 Akward LBS)
TO THE POINT= I don't think the OSSC looks better then Component Cables
(PSYCLONES) str8 to PS2... Wife said the words don't look as bloody/drippy
on the OSSC..
~SO SHE ASKED THE QUESTION= Is it suppose dto make it HD or just a high quality converter to HDMI..
The OSSC for sure is smaller then a monster Samsung TV(That i paid $1200 in 2013)
Here's what the OSSC destroyed in quality.
It destroyed those simple cheesy converters that are $15 bucks on ebay.
~It destroys the $60 dollar upgraded model
~Lastly it 100% is superirior to the Backwards PS3.
I accidentally bought the garbage backwards PS3 EMULATOR MODEL.
Not the god level Emotion CHip that people rave about..
~~So i can't compare ossc to EMotion chip PS3
for PS2 quality....
~I did hook up two PS2's on sep TV.s
both on start screen of NHL 2002
Here's wher ei have a important question..
I never bothered even putting batteries into the OSSC remote
cause it sounded stupid to me. Until i learned that all the settings are there.
I don't need a profile for this/that setting..
IS THERE A QUALITY BUTTON ONLY THE REMOTE CAN TOGGLE ON???
My Bottom line is The OSSC is great for someone wanting quality and to save space..
But if you have the room i would say Those 1080[ flat panel with component are the way to go for OG Xbox,,
PS2,,Wii.. Obviously you are assed-out for N64 and older games....
~~I hope we GenX live to see super HD quality where all the pixels are cleaned up and the only limitation is
the actual models that can't be changed...
~Who has seen videos of the 1st Legend of Zelda fan remaster that makes it look amazing..
This is my goal one day...
If anyone took the time to read my awful writing
Does the Retrotink offer higher quality or is it to minimum to be worth it..
I admit im not into tinkering for a tiny upgrade.
