Tom, your videos over the past year have increased my carving confidence tremendously. Now I can walk down into the basement and just stand there and wonder how to do something on my decoy . I can dive right in and get something done and not just think to myself, " I am not sure what to do." THank you for helping me!

Hi Tom, just one question, why grey primer?. Why not use white to help with the paint job?. Get the right colour. We all paint on white paper. Or is it because that’s closer to the down feather?. ( I just thought about that! ). Whatever the reason just keep the videos coming.

Great question. I just like starting with a neutral color since most ducks have both dark and light values on them. The other reason is if a decoy gets nicked a little in the tank or field it won’t be bright white showing through. Not sure they are good reasons 😁.

Tom, apologies if this is an obvious answer. You said that since this is a marsh duck, you want the weight further forward. Could you elaborate on that?

No, it’s a good question. Most marsh ducks have the tail lifted and the rump/wood under the tail is angled and fairly narrow. That makes the decoy sink lower in the tail. It’s not 100% but normally you need weight closer to the front of the keel to keep the tail lifted in its proper position on the water. Hope that helps.
