How is your native garden or Monarch garden growing?! #milkweedformonarchs2023
It’s so nice to have a positive moment!
Yes it is!! Cheers Glen & Annette!!
Hi Rich . I planted 20 more butterfly milk weed again this year. The Monarch have returned to the north shore of Lake Erie and have noticed caterpillars on the plants. Plant it and they will come.
That is awesome! Congrats on getting the Monarchs to arrive and the caterpillars! I'm watching for them and hoping we'll get a batch this year. Have a great week Dave!
So nice to see the Monarch Butterfly's in your native garden. 🦋
The timing was incredible! I've been checking the Butterfly Weed and Milkweed but no caterpillars so far. I'll keep watching! Thanks for stopping by Barb!
My dear friend thanks so much for another great video always enjoy a good garden video and I learned so much from all my RUclips buddies. Hugs and kisses from grandma, Sandy and Debbie.
Thanks for stopping by and watching! We appreciate the support Sandy & Debbie!
Garden looks great Rich
Thanks for stopping by! have a great week Joey & Kris!
The butterfly bush are very pretty. It looks good!
It is the only native plant in MN that has an orange bloom! So gorgeous! Cheers Lisa!
Looks great. Cool to see the butterflies have arrived.
It is so nice to see the butterflies flying around the garden! Cheers!
Looks great! Glad the deer didn’t eat it all. Yay it worked! Have a great rest of the week!
We rarely get deer since we're out in an open area. This must've just been a deer moving through and grabbing a snack. Hopefully a one-time deal. Cheers Lisa.
So cool to hear the monarchs have arrived!
It's so fun to watch them bouncing around the Farm and visiting the new native garden! Cheers Kathleen!
Nice! So cool! We just posted ours, we had about 26 monarch catapillars on our Milkweed! I would add Milkweed if you don't have it. They need it to survive. 🌻😁
I failed to mention the milkweed that we have planted. Plenty of it. A video about Monarchs and I forgot to mention the Milkweed! Duh!
Hello Rich, thank you for the update on your Native Flower Garden. You mentioned that deer had jumped your fence and eaten the tops off from some of the plants. I thought I'd pass on a method that another you tube presenter had done to keep deer out of his subdivision garden. It's simple and cheap. He said that he used 30-40 pound text mono fishing line tied off to fence posts at 2 different heights. He explained that deer tend to be cautions creatures, they couldn't see the mono in the dark, and when they brushed up against it they ran away from what they couldn't see. A cheap fix which didn't harm the deer and saved the garden. Also, we don't have a native garden but we do allow milk weed to grow up in our shrubs and flower beds. We have probably 5 or so right now. They are, as you likely know, a key item that monarchs feed on.
Great on the milkweed. I can't wait for ours to fill in and expand in the garden. The fishing line sounds fun. I'll look into getting posts installed. Thanks for the idea! Cheers!
Looking really nice
Thank you Dave!
Looking good. My niece joined the Save The Monarchs and planted a lot of their seeds. She had extra plants so she gave me some and I have them growing in a tire planter.
If she is on Facebook, have her look at the Milkweed For Monarchs Project. She can join us and I'll admit her to the group. The more, the merrier! Cheers Janie!
Lol, I was just wondering about your butterfly garden and here it is.
Cool to see tge update Rich and it'll just improve year over year. Glad to see they made it up there. Btw in our garden it's 50-50 between the Milkweed and Echinacea.
Cheers J&C 🌱🤞👍
I can't wait to see how it expands and fills in over the years. I want to add plants next year and let the grasses fill in. Thanks for stopping by! Cheers!
Looking really, thanks 🙏🥰
Thank you!!
Looking good! One plant that I highly recommend is Meadow Blazing Star. I have one planted by my deck, along with some other natives and for the past couple of years, we have seen several monarchs visiting at once. I’ve been able to get some nice pics from it. I have several other natives, one of my favorites is the butterfly weed. You’ll notice it will start growing milkweed like pods in the fall. You can harvest them, stratify in the fridge over winter, then you can either spread more, or start growing them inside with your garden starts in spring. I have done both and it worked great! You guys are such an inspiration! 😊🐝🐓
I have a couple Blazing Star already going in the back. It's a bit small while getting established. I'll keep adding to the milkweed and butterfly weed. I've grown them both in the past, with great results! Thanks for stopping by! Cheers!
Is there another name for the Butterfly Weed? Looks beautiful. The Bluestem grass is also one of my favs.😊
The Butterfly Weed that is native to my area is Asclepias Tuberosa. I know it is in the Milkweed family but I don't know any other name. I love the Little Bluestem! Cheers Kim!
Congrats on the butterflies! I haven't seen any Monarchs yet, although I discovered a bunch of milkweeds right near the house, in spring. Do you identify the weeds?... because some wild things may be beneficial.
I am only removing the invasive, non-native weeds. Trying to just have native plants and flowers in the garden. Thanks for stopping by!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm Makes sense! I would also like to weed more selectively. I am overwhelmed by the amount of weeds in our yard, every year, and the rate of growth. Have only recently taken to identifying some, and found some useful herbs, among other things.
Put "Irish spring" soap in the garden and the deer will stay away. I use it around my arborvitaes, rhododendrons and bird feeders. I just use chunks. Either put them on the ground by the plants or I put it on a string and hang it off the plant in some spots. The arborvitaes I did that with. Did not affect the plant but kept the deer away.
I'll check on the soap and give that a try. We usually don't get deer in our area. Hopefully a rare occurrence! Cheers!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm 👍 it needs to be actual Irish spring not other brand names. I'm in Michigan..we have deer everywhere. Lol
I’ve had milkweed as last ng as I’ve lived here and this is the first year I haven’t seen any monarch caterpillars! Disappointing! I’m wondering if it is because it’s so dry.
Keep watching and keep us posted. I think the dry conditions have affected everything. I'm hoping we can get a late brood before they start their journey south. Cheers Tani!
