i got some Jalapeño seeds and planted them and got banana peppers instead im not happy just found out about this now i know it wasnt a fluke i got my seeds from walmart i was so confused
@@dragonflye4561 Wondering if they look like the peppers I have? What seed company was it? Such a huge mistake and it impacted so many of us. Unreal! Thanks for stopping by!
I was affected by the seed mix of 2023. I bought mine from Ferry Morris seed company. Sweet Orange Bell Peppers turned out to be a HOT 🔥🥵 red pepper 🌶️, Yellow Jubilee tomatoes turned out to be some kind of plum tomato.
We bought some Jalapeño seeds and grew them this year, ended up with Cubanelle by the looks of it
It has happened to me in the past with peppers. I started to save my own seeds with better germination and more control of what I have. A good seed company should test for germination and have quality control.
I figured that there would be quality checks in place to guarantee that the correct seeds get into the correct bags. I guess not! Thanks for stopping by Dave!
Dang! My jalapeños are not hot and I wondered what happened!!
Soshitzu 😂😂😂😂
Soshitzu!!
We have so many pepper issues this year!! We also had Livingston, Burpees and Ferry Morse. Very few of our bell peppers even grew. And I’m waiting to figure out what our jalapeños actually are. I didn’t know this was a big scale thing though! We bought at big stores too and no longer have receipts. Good to know for next year!
Keep us posted on what you find your jalapenos to be. I've heard a lot about bad germination rates. Cheers!
A couple of years ago I had that happen with Jalapeño peppers. This year my biggest complaint was poor germination from seeds that came labeled as (Renee’s seeds).
I’d be writing the companies an email so that they are aware. If the problem starts at the top and enough people complain maybe they will investigate.
I sent an email last year regarding the Poblano. Never heard back from Livingston. Nothing. I bet they are hoping this will all blow over.
I never had that happen! Makes perfect sense. I’ve never heard of peppergate. I’ve had a lot of seeds not germinate at all. Livingston and ferry Morse are seeds I will not buy again! They’re awful and don’t grow. Oh geez sorry rich what a bummer. If you don’t have the receipt you could contact the company I’m sure they would refund
I'm going to send an email to each company. I did contact Livingston last year, regarding my Poblano Peppers. No response. Poor quality and poor communication.
Thanks for posting this, I had no idea why the Poblano peppers I grew were tiny and light green. I will try a different company next year. They were Ancho Poblano seeds from Hudson Valley Seed Company
Amazing. You have a different company but the same problem. Those are the shishito peppers. Unreal. Take care Shannon!
Wow. Your garden looks incredible. I've never heard of this pepper issue before. Thanks for bringing it to lite. Might be time to try saving your own pepper seeds. They are pretty simple.
I'll look into saving the seeds. Not sure if they cross with other peppers. I guess I need to save my favorites and keep my own stock. Great idea! Cheers!
This video came up in our live last Tuesday and there were some saying this happened to them. I’m growing peppers and so far everything looks like it’s supposed to so I think im good. Came over to hear about what was going on and sooo frustrating! Great video to share the news! 😊👍❤️
It is frustrating. I see a green pepper plant today that looks unusual. Maybe a spicy pepper? Let others know about the video as I'm compiling a list of people affected. Cheers!
Well dang Mr Rich, that stinks!! Hadn't heard to much about it, but Im not exactly in the loop. I do remember yiu having that mixup last year though I think. Hopefully that levels itself out soon though!! Cheers my friend, things are looking great!! 😁😁👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
It'll be a year without jalapenos. That stinks! I'll have to look around for people to trade with. Thanks for stopping by Nelson! Take care!
I bought jimmy nardello from Baker Creek Rare seeds but the package contained a very hot red cayenne. Very upset after all the work growing them out.
This was a real disappointing season for peppers. I sure hope they get their act together for 2024. We couldn't make salsa and other items due to not having a few pepper varieties. Thanks for stopping by to share your experience. Cheers to a better 2024!!
Now I know why my jalapenos are big and yellow! LOL!
What company did you buy seeds from? Sounds like you have the same seeds as me.
Same here! My milti-colored bells have turned out just like your jalapenos! They were Ferry Morse from the big box store. My California Wonder Bells have done spectacular this year but the seeds I used were 2 years old and are Livingston from the big box store.
It is amazing how widespread this is and how many plant types are affected. Unreal!
Same here. I 'planted' Sweet peppers Carnival blend from Burpee and also Organic California Wonder Peppers, basically green and red varieties of Bells, as you know, from Pennington seed companies. These were purchased at a big box store as well.
And I have lots of hot peppers. No Bell pepper types at all.
I've been harvesting them for a couple plus months..it's 2024. This is my first home garden..
I just laughed out loud uncontrollably about you getting 'shi shi tzu'd' 😂😂😂 seriously so funny Rich!!! How did you do that without laughing!?!?!
It just came out. I wasn't thinking of it ahead of time. I think I was thinking amore about missing my jalapenos and that kept me from being too funny. It's amazing how widespread this is and that this industry really doesn't have any quality controls in place. Have a great week!
I heard about this , but have not been affected. A few years back I bought my sister a box of wildflower seeds. She planted it in her beautiful flower bed and all that came up was crabgrass !!
She might want to look at the box. I've seen wildflower boxes and the seeds inside were for the Texas market. Not at all ready for MN weather! Cheers Janie!
This is going on in my garden!!
Are you using seeds from last year? What company are the seeds from? I may have one green pepper that is really and ornamental pepper. The rest of mine are perfect from this years seeds. Let me know what you're experiencing. Sorry you go caught in this. Cheers!
I've left my jalapeños on the plant for weeks now and they just aren't turning deep green they are a yellowish green. There is no way they are jalapeños I'm gonna get some jars tomorrow or later today. And pick them / try them. But it's 2024 and this is still an issue. I won't be upset if they are banana peppers as they are my favorite but I have BP plants that weren't from seed so it would be nice to have jalapeños. Either way I'll update this once I try one and try to let you know what they are. They were burpee seeds. So this is obviously still an issue.
I've got four varieties planted this year (plus green and red peppers). I'm hoping this has left us alone. If they are yellow, I bet you have Hungarian Wax. Just a hunch. Keep us updated on what you find. Cheers!
Hey y'all, I have seen the pepper thing these past two garden seasons. I was very careful to tag all my pepper plants. I got squirrels and rabbits everywhere. The rabbits ate all my green bean type plants down to the stems. I had to rig up some chicken wire and replanted ALL of them. Now the squirrels have their own game to play the do not seem to eat the pepper plants or peppers but they love to run around and knock all the marker sticks all around so now I have to wait to see what comes up. Also I take photos all day long of everything including the identity markers. This way I can go back to the photos to get all my questions answered.
So next year I will use the tree tags you see at the nursery. I bought a 1,000 package and I will wrap them loosely around the bottom of the stem with the garden permanent marker I use. All my okra got water damage and died so I had to restart them ALL also. I just got the first two okra pieces yesterday. About a month behind but thats OK.
I did see quite a few long yellow hungarian peppers but I did plant some so I have to find them and look at the photos to be sure if they were supposed to be them or is it a mistake.
Last year I started 400 onion seeds 4 varieties three of them had great germination and one variety of 100 seeds had a grand total germination of, wait for it, ZERO germination! I contacted Baker creek and they told my pick another one we will credit your account so it was free for me. They did not offer those seeds again as they discontinued that seed. So all y'all need to contact these folks every time so they can use their quality assurance folks look into it. This helps everyone else next year. Now, they may do nothing but we have done our due diligence to do our part. Y'all take care God bless be safe
I'll contact the companies. Last year I contacted Livingston about the Poblano peppers and I didn't get a return communication. Nothing. Poor quality controls and poor customer service! I hope you get everything figured out! Cheers!
I live to blame the seed companies but it was us and the weather this year.
Heard it happening more and more. Hard to find people to work in especially this industry.
Yep look like Shishito peppers.
Cheers 🌱🤞👍
It might be hard to find people to work in this industry, but they need quality controls on all their processes. Something this large should never happen. I hope this is a one-time thing. Cheers!
Drat. I was hoping i was wrong, thinking my peppers all looked wrong. I'll look closer.... And start believing myself!
Let me know if you have issues too. I'd like to hear the variety and the seed company. Cheers Jennifer!
Thank you. Buying seeds for next year soon. Will be selective of who I buy from. 🙏🙏🙏
I'm making notes so I can be really selective! Cheers Phyllis!
I actually bought bell pepper plants (I thought) from my local nursery and now I have a whole bunch of Hungarian wax peppers. 😢
It seems like they put the wax peppers into every seed packet!! Sorry you got the wrong peppers (like all of us). Have a great week!
This happened to me with what were supposed to be California Wonder pepper seeds bought in late 2021 and grown in 2022. Do you know if the shops have cleared out their mixed up seeds for 2024?
I am praying that everyone has cleared out all the bad seeds. I wouldn't want to go through this again. Let's keep in touch. Cheers!
We ordered what was supposed to be poblano pepper starts from Azure Standard. They too were pepperoncini. Not shishito like many guessed. Azure is a major grocery co op that sells plant starts in the spring.
Someone at a seed supplier sure got things messed up this year. I'm hoping we can get some reassurances for next year. Someone needs to get their quality issues figured out for next year.
Yeap I bought "Jalapeno" and ended up with pablanos. No jalapeno peppers at all this year. Mine were Botanical Interest seeds.
Yeap those are Shishito peppers. Little olive oil in a skillet, poke holes with a fork in the shishitos, sear them quickly in the pan. Then make the dipping sauce that goes along with them. They are really good. Most of them aren't hot, but 1 out of 10 has a little heat.
Whats the dipping sauce that goes with the peppers? I'm frustrated to not have any jalapenos. I love those peppers! Cheers Gwen!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm
natashaskitchen.com/blistered-shishito-peppers/
This is the one I use. And the most common one used. It kinda tastes like Thousand Island Dressing, but not quite the same.
Just be sure to poke holes in the peppers before searing them, because if you don't, they will explode.
@@TheOldSwedesFarm I am frustrated too not having any jalapenos. I usually can jalapeno slices for pizzas and nachos etc. Thankfully I had a bumper crop last year and still have lots on the pantry shelves. But still aggravating to plant what is supposed to be jalapenos, and end up with something else. At least I will use the Poblano peppers.
@@BroqueCowgirlHomestead I'll check the recipe. I'm bummed because both my Poblano AND Jalapeno are a bust. It's unreal that this can happen on this large a scale. No quality checks.
@@TheOldSwedesFarm Honestly it's like buckets and buckets of all kinda pepper seeds got spilled and they just swept them up and decided to call them whatever.
Oh wow. I knew I planted jalepenos and got something else. Thought it was just me.
Let me know the company and what you really got. We need to pool our experiences. Cheers Lisa!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm Ferry Morse from Home Depot. They’re long and look banana pepper ish but not sure what they are. I’m in Phoenix for work right now or I’d send you a photo
@@beesandseeds Check to see if they look like my peppers when you get back home. I'm guessing that they will be. It's unreal that there aren't quality checks at the seed companies. Maybe this will change a process.
Oh man !! I'm sorry you got "shishito'd" in the pepper gate. That's terrible.
I miss my jalapenos!!! It just won't be the same without them. I hope this hasn't affected you. Cheers Dawn!
I'm in Niagara falls NY and I'm affected!!! I purchased burpee seeds. I purchased the colored variety of sweet peppers and I ended up getting extremely hot peppers that look like to be peppercinis or something
It is amazing how widespread this is. It seems like everyone got the spicy hot peppers instead of the green peppers or colored peppers or jalapenos. I'm starting to think this was someone playing a huge joke on everyone. Thanks for checking in. Cheers!
First I have to tell you that I love black cherry tomatoes!!! I planted two different packs of jalapeños. I got two different kinds of peppers. I need to check my receipts. I planted a lot of different peppers (sweet) for the first time. I don’t know my peppers well so I don’t know if they are right. I wanted to see what I like. Not the year for that. Most of them look the same and taste the same. I’m getting a quite a few peppers this year. I should have enough jalapeños to make salsa. Are you getting rain? Not here. It looked like rain all day Sunday and literally had about 3 drops in the rain gauge.
We received .51" on Sunday. Finally, a slow rain! Keep us posted on the peppers and let us know if they turned out how you wanted. Cheers Tani!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm I had about 3 drop in my rain gauge. The radar showed rain here all day but it didn’t hit the ground. I checked my jalapeños and I planted 8 and I got 5. The other 3 are long yellow ones. All the peppers taste the same to me except one is a lot warmer. I didn’t plant any warm ones except the jalapeños.
@@LytonaKirtz The yellow are Hungarian Wax. Not hot at all. Sorry about no rain. Next time!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm I put one on a tortilla pizza tonight. Very good!
I love the way your garden looks. So neat and clean you work really hard at keeping it clean? Looks very nice i was not affected by the seeds, my peppers just didnt produce i think i killed them with too much chicken manure, whoops.
Chicken manure can be pretty "hot" and needs a season to compost and break down. It's great fertilizer......after a year!!
Tractor Supply sends receipts to my email. Sounds like it's time to call up a reporter at the Washington Post. This might be a story, seriously. The New Yorker ran a big story on the grain industry awhile back for devious practices and another story on the olive oil industry. Something is amiss! I chuckled, but your disappointment is totally understandable given the time, money, and energy expended in planting these seeds, not to mention no salsa in your future. For us salsa fans, salsa is almost like breathing. Something as dumb as poor quality control at the big companies could be the culprit, but maybe something else.
We will see if anyone picks up the story!! I think this is pretty low on the national agenda! I really am bummed about the salsa but I do have several cases in stock from previous years. I need to plant heavily next year! Cheers!
Yep bought orange bell paper plants and it grew two different plants from Walmart
It is amazing how many people were affected and how widespread this was. I'm assuming most people have no clue about this but are just scratching their heads, thinking "What did I do wrong." Thanks for reporting your issue, John. Cheers!
So far everything we expected to get, we have gotten regarding peppers. Just lucky I guess. But, I didn’t plant Hungarians this year and I’d love to get some!
If you're near me, I'd love to share! I've got a LOT!!!
Several here in Indiana that I know of have been affected.... Was looking forward to jalapenos for my salsa 😔
I'm really bummed that I won't have jalapenos for salsa (and breakfast scrambles)! I guess it'll be better next year! Cheers!
Could you still use those Hungarian Yellows in your salsa? Are they hot peppers? I love the pepperocini in Italian beef.
The flavor of the yellows just isn't what I want. Not very hot at all. I'll just skip making salsa this year. I like pepperoncini's but these turn out to be shishito. Just my luck!
My Hungarian yellows are decent hot- they get hotter as the ripen more. I’ve liked the salsa I’m making with them
I got Shishihtzud too!! Oh my God, I thought it was just me ! And you know what else ? This totally explains why the "stevia" seeds I bought turned out to be pokeweed. Man, this sucks. Thanks for letting us know though. Appreciate it.
Let us know the seed company and we can start a good list of the offending companies and the seed types. It is amazing how widespread it is and how many different plants were affected. It does suck. I wanted my jalapenos! Cheers Alicia!
I'll check the co of the pepper seeds, but the "stevia" seeds were from a co called plant good seeds. Idk,I bought them on Amazon cuz baker creek & a few other places had already sold out on the stevia stock.
I feel you on missing the jalapeños ! They go with everything !
@@aliciaspears7847 I looked at the jalapenos at the store. Gross! I've got a note out to our local garden club to see if someone has some extra 'penos! Cheers Alicia!
Ah, what a fantastic resource ! Living in South Texas, jalapeños are not in short supply locally, thank goodness. I do prefer to grow my own, but my tortilla soup just wouldn't be the same without the peppers, so I'll be buying at the farmers market. Hope you're able to find some in your area. Salud!
@@aliciaspears7847 I'm betting you've got more in your area versus me!! Cheers Alicia!
I bought a “Purple Beauty” bell pepper plant from the 99Cents store and it’s some sort of hot red pepper instead. I had thought it was just a case of “oops somebody jostled the tags” until Epic Gardening talked about it!
Bell peppers and spicy peppers were the most affected. I hadn't heard about Purple Beauty, but it sounds like you got caught up in all the issues. Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences! Cheers!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm thank you! It’s great to have found your channel
I planted cayenne and wound up with those same Hungarian wax peppers. I also planted bells and I've got what looks like cherry peppers with only a couple bell plants.
I think the brand was Ferry-Morse bought at Lowes
It seems like everyone has these same peppers. Maybe the original seed company only grew this variety and gave them away for all the seed packets. It's amazing that there are no quality controls in the seed industry. I hope Lowe's will refund your money. Cheers!
live in Ohio and got struck big time this year.....thought I was growing jalopeno, turns out some kind of banana peppers....so now got gobs of banana peppers....not bad, but wanted jalopeno.
Sounds like the same thing I have. So disappointing. There must not be any quality controls at the seed companies. Thanks for checking in and letting us know you've been affected. Cheers!
I planted Pot-o-peno seeds from Seeds n Such. Got the same pepper type as you.
It's amazing how the seed industry appears to not have any quality controls in place. I'm praying for a better 2024 garden season. I want my jalapenos! Cheers Diane!
Update - I contacted Seeds-n-Such and told them about my experience. My goal was to inform them, but they asked for a picture of my plant and fruit, then gave me a credit. I appreciate their attitude and response. No feedback as to how this happened, however. Something about the system for seed production must have changed. I have purchased seeds for over 30 years, and this is the first time something like this has happened to me. I have purchased from many companies over the years, too. I, too, pray that this situation will be corrected and our seeds will produce as advertised. Many folks depend on this for their livelihood. Perhaps you are one of them. Heirloom seeds could be a solution, but we gain so much from the programs that develop hybrids that are disease-resistant and have other beneficial traits. Thank you for your video and all the best for your future gardening and farming!
I purchased Early Jalapenos and Mild Jalapenos from both Ferry Morse and Burpee. So far all the "Early Jalapenos" are looking like little Hungarian Wax Peppers. The mild jalapeno from ferry morse looks like a little green bell pepper.
It is amazing how widespread this is. I really need to find some jalapenos. I need to make my salsa! Sorry you were affected. Next year will be better!
Oh No.. I have heard of Pepper Gate. I don't order seeds anymore, I save my own seeds now & get my seeds from friends or I will do a seed swap!
I have some poblano seeds I can send you? 😉
Definitely! We've been without poblano for two years. Salsa isn't the same without them. Thanks Barb!!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm
👍🌱👍
Hate you didn’t get the results you were expecting. I’ve gotten pole beans instead of bush beans before. 😂. Resulted in a jungle. Lol
That would be a jungle! Last year was the first year I received something different. Now it's two years in a row for the Poblano peppers. I think I'm changing companies. I hope this all gets cleared up before next year! Cheers Chuck!
Wow, that is not a lot of fun when you get wrong seeds in packages
It's frustrating. I would figure they'd all have quality controls in place. I guess not! Cheers Rebekah!
Those little ones are Shi-Shi-toe!😆 I ordered Ajvarskis from Baker Creek and got those long yellow HOT peppers that turn orange and then red!! I hate hot peppers! Can't eat 'em!
I like some heat but didn't get any jalapenos last year. I was really bummed. Sorry you got the hot peppers. Thanks for stopping by to watch! Cheers!
Wow you just just said the same pepper that grew after I first commented
There are some common themes, bell pepper, jalapeno, poblano, etc.
I got the poblano / pepperoncini mix up this year, but luckily my jalapeños were marked correctly. I thought mine might be shoshito too but their bottoms are a little more bell pepper like instead of a point
It is amazing that the seed industry appears to not have any quality controls. I can't believe how this could happen on such a large scale. I hope we all have a better year next year! Cheers!
Same. We ordered our starts from Azure Standard. Guess the people who provide their starts got mixed up seeds.
@@djboyd4k There have been several reports regarding Azure. I'm hoping that someone will address this issue and make some guarantees for the 2024 season. It's frustrating to buy seeds and have the product be wrong. Thanks for checking in and reporting your issues. Cheers!
I got peppergated but not by seed, I bought an Orange lunchbox mini pepper but it wasnt that, Still not sure what they are but they grew out long skinny and kind of curly red peppers but I m to scared to eat them. lokl
Tabasco peppers? Look at some pictures and see if they match. It's too bad that you were caught in this too. I haven't heard much about this in 2024. I hope it's all over. Keep me posted what you find.
Yah I want able to find it online I'll probably take one to the nursery to ask then
@@TheOldSwedesFarm I am not sure it is, the nursery said they just got a call from someone that bought a 6 pack of jalapeno plants and those grew into yellow Guajillo peppers :-(
@@TELLASTAR03 Peppergate has snared you. I hope they will refund your money. You should find out who they buy from and see if you can figure out the seed source. It is amazing this is still going on. Keep us posted. It is amazing that there is such a low level of quality control in this industry.
Planted the Bentley sweet carnival blend pepper in December and it grew what looks like Hungarian wax pepper...sigh
It is amazing how far the reach of Peppergate it. Were the seeds from last year or new seeds from the store? I'm hoping that the seed companies have their stuff together this year and we won't have to deal with this. Keep me updated. Sorry this is affecting you.......
I too was supposed to have Pablono, and they are shishito. 😢
This was a common mix-up. Poblano, Jalapeno and Green Peppers were the most common errors. Sorry you had to experience this. I hope they have a quality process for next year!
Maybe seed keeping is the only safe thing to do.
I need good plants first. The bad seeds from this year grew bad plants. Maybe I need to seed swap with others who know exactly what they have! I'm hoping the seed industry has their processes worked out for next year!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm I wouldn't trust them.

😂😂😂 people actually buy from those places???!
It seems like every place was affected in one way or another. It was nasty. I hope you haven't had any issues. Cheers Mary!
Wow, so sorry you got the wrong seeds. I haven’t heard if this. I ordered a few different seeds from Baker Creek, one being fish peppers, but that’s what I got. But I’m not getting too many yet. Not sure if they’re late growing, or maybe the lack of rain. I did put in sweet red peppers from Livingston, which are still green, so not sure if they will turn red or they’re the wrong kind. I’ve had a hard time growing red peppers, they never turn red. 😕 First egg gate, now peppergate! 😊🐓🐝🪴
Maybe it'll be a new "gate" every year. I hope not. I just want my jalapenos!! Red peppers are just green peppers that ripen longer. If you keep them on longer, they should turn. Keep us posted. Cheers!
High Mowing Seed was affected
It is amazing how widespread this is. They must have no quality controls in place. Cheers!
BAKER CREEK - ALL MY PEPPERS WERE BANANA PEPPERS THIS YEAR AND I DIDNT EVEN ORDER ANY
I ordered Sugar Rush peach, jalapeño, datil, poblano, bell peppers. Every single one was a banana pepper.
