This song inspired me to name my 4th daughter Eleanor. Sadly, she was stillborn at almost two months early. This song serves as a reminder and a tribute to my baby girl. "I was a child before the day that I met Eleanor." That line alone symbolizes the changes that took place in me when I held her in my arms and then had to say goodbye to her. Thank you guys for a song that touched me before and that means so much more now.
This song kills me. My son passed away last year when his daughter was just 3 years old. I can just imagine him singing this to her. The Avett Bros have helped me grieve a little easier.
For the past 8 years since I first discovered The Avett Brothers they have been my favorite all time band. Every album has touched my heart and soul so deeply its difficult to describe. Everytime I find myself having a new favorite song it is always by The Avett Brothers. I can't say thank you sincerely enough to them for their love of music and of their fans.
Scott's voice carries through open air like it is the most perfect acoustical venue. It's amazing. They are the most talented band out there right now. Amazing.
Looks like Alaska. Wonderful song! Once again,,,,,I love you guys, your music, your voices, your perfect harmony, your deep, meaningful lyrics and your positive energy!
This song is just brilliant. I get chills even though it is my millionth time listening to it. This is by far my favorite song on their new album. Marry me Scott Avett!!!
One of my favorite Avett Bros songs and I have many. I have one blue eyed little girl and I have never heard or felt a song capture my love for her so well!!! Old Souls these men among boys!
What an absolutely beautiful song! Written by an amazing man for a beautiful daughter. This is so personal and so loving. Thank you, Scott, for being willing to share such special words and music with us. I can't wait to hear what you write for Max, and hope you'll share that with us as well. Love to you and your family.
Not since Yeats's elegeic Notes from a Father to his Daughter and Snodgrass's Heart's Needle have I heard such eloquence on this topic of father-daughter devotion...what a trip to hear this celebratory, gut raw declaration of love emanating from Crackerfarm!! Thanks you beautiful brothers, for singing all our love for our daughters!!
I'm from New York and no matter how much the events that happened on 9/11 have affected me every year, listening to this album today has soothed the uneasy feeling that i get at this time every year. Great job Scott, Seth, Bob, and Joe, you guys are incredible.
I have been an Avett fan since 2008 and have had many of their songs speak to me over the years. However, I just had a daughter 5 1/2 weeks ago and have never felt such a connection to a song ever before. :)
Over 6 months since this video was uploaded and I still have to watch it every couple days! Just love it! Captures Scott and Seth's voices beautifully. You did a great job with this one Mike! Thank you :) ps still pinching myself that I got to catch you guys in the UK :)
Interesting how the brother with the higher voice range plays the deeper sounding guitar and the one on the right has a deeper voice yet plays a lighter guitar. These two complement each other so well.
Was this filmed in Alaska? I saw them the 8/29 at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer, AK. Because of the timeline, and the scenery, I thought this may have been filmed while in Alaska.
I bet your right, this looks the Cook Inlet near Girdwood, which is right around Anchorage. I was so pissed I missed this show, couldn't get to the big city in time.
@emitree13 Agreed! I put this album on shuffle along with the rest and I hear nothing but the essence of who the are coming through. The new songs still give me pause, which is the beauty of it all. Great work!
+David Mannerude thing is they constantly tour. My wish is that they will stay in the medium venues, instead these super huge pasture with a stage. Such talent, so raw and vulnerable!
"The realist thing Ive ever felt was the blood on the floor and the love in your yell."
One of the most beautiful line in the history of music.
gets me every time.

this comment made me want to cry. sleep tight beautiful Eleanor.
This brought to tears, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'll think of your Eleanor every time I hear this song, and say a prayer for you.

oh my god matt, i'm so sorry.
Matt Farris we used this song in a video about our premie that was born after our stillborn
The gentle lapping of the water complements this so well.
I lost my husband, he took his life, and this is my song now....
Oh man, as a dad and Avett fan I haven’t seen this video before. This song always brings a tear to my eye.

I'm so sorry
I'm so sorry. My niece and nephew died. I can't breathe but I can still sing this
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written in the history of the universe. If you are a parent you have to listen to this at least 4 times.
"I do not live less I live in your light" simply beautiful

LYRICS
Sweetest surrender of winter
She put up her flag, it is waving
The thunder of summer is rumbling in
And I haven't seen you in days
And my, how that feeling has changed
Oh, I have been homesick for you since we met
I have been homesick for you
I've got to take to the sky
And I'll tell you what that means for you and I
If I die it's for you
If I die it's for you
I never lived 'til I lived in your light
And my heart never beat like it does at the sight
Of you baby blue, God blessed your life
I do not live 'less I live in your light
I do not live 'less I live in your light
The realest thing I ever felt
Was the blood on the floor and the love in your yell
I was a child before
The day that I met Eleanor
Kiss of the wind in the hills
The clearness of morning, the late evening thrill
Blurry and gray like the roar
The wheels on the highway, above them I soar
When I'm in the sweet daughter's eyes
My heart is now ruined for the rest of all time
There's no part of it left to give
There's no part of it left to give
I never lived 'til I lived in your light
And my heart never beat like it does at the sight
Of you baby blue, God blessed your life
I do not live 'less I live in your light
I do not live 'less I live in your light
I do not live

This song is so beautiful that it brings tears to my eyes. Absolutley stunning!
These boys are made of magic. I don't know how they do it.
Lucky little girl to have a daddy sing such a beautiful song in her honor.
Better songwriters do not exist.
As a songwriter myself, I can't aspire to be better, only as good. Anyone who has heard their songs should count them selves lucky.
They are wonderful, but I contest that Penny and Sparrow are the best I've heard as of yet.
Try some Towns Van Zandt. I’m sure these guys would thumbs up to that suggestion.
straordinari...semplicemente straordinari!....la buona musica balza all'orecchio!!!...stupendi Avett brothers.....laura
Excellent job capturing the audio!! Sounds really good despite all the open air and wind!
This song has set up camp in my head. :)
Love you all. Truly warms my heart watching and listening to you guys. What a tremendous way to brighten a day like this.
People say they changed their style. But this song could be on the gleam! Keep it up :)

Amazing... Words can't describe such a beautiful song. Keep it up guys.
I have been an Avett fan since 2008 and have had many of their songs speak to me over the years. However, I just had a daughter 5 1/2 weeks ago and have never felt such a connection to a song ever before. :)
Awesome song. I'm sure any real daddy can relate. You all continue to amaze me.

Yes, this was filmed at Beluga Point just outside Anchorage. This was done just before the Fair/Concert in Palmer - and a great concert it was!!!
This was definitely in Alaska! They were just here and it looks just like it here.
@emitree13 Agreed! I put this album on shuffle along with the rest and I hear nothing but the essence of who the are coming through. The new songs still give me pause, which is the beauty of it all. Great work!
I love this song.
I think this is what heaven sounds like
My favorite vid of the avetts
Always a favorite
These guys need to come to the Northwest! A concert at the gorge in George would be perfect,
I second that!
+David Mannerude they have played there
+David Mannerude thing is they constantly tour. My wish is that they will stay in the medium venues, instead these super huge pasture with a stage. Such talent, so raw and vulnerable!

I love you guys.
THANK YOU
That harmony at 2:41 is what dreams are made of.
AlabamaWhurley I never noticed that
Amazing song. I'm a new father
Just another genius song.....
Has anyone else noticed that Seth's guitars with the musical skull and the dragonfly/butterfly have not shown up in these videos for a long time?
So do I. That would be amazing.
Added beauty of ultra sound at the end. Do good :')
My favorite.
