  • Allan Lane and Kay Aldridge in the complete first chapter of the long-lost 1943 Republic serial DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST, restored by the Serial Squadron with re-created sound including complete new voice-overs for dialogue and comprehensive sound effects for the missing reel 1. (Dexter's line "that land is going to belong to me!" which appears with music behind it is captured from the trailer.) The serial has not been seen since 1943, apparently because 5 reels of audio went missing not long after its initial release. For further information about this much-anticipated serial release visit www.serialsquadron.com.

As Betsy knows I have a soft spot for heroines that aren't just zippo characters but feisty and part of the story. Especially where it concerns old serials. Kay Aldridge seems to play formidable characters and she seems do be one in this serial. I'm looking forward to more chapters. Thanks Betsy for alerting me to this gal.

The inaugural chapters of many additional old-time movie serials are, or soon will be, available on The Serial Squadron's RUclips channel; but THIS one is the one I've been wishing, hoping, and waiting to see for twenty-five years now. (Even longer than I had waited before that to see The Adventures of Captain Marvel!) Thank you, thank you, thank you to Dr. Grood and his elite corps of cliffhanger connoisseurs!

In this scene 12:51, the original actors are using their own voices. The Army colonel is Stanley Andrews, who later was the host of the original Death Valley Days. Viewers will note Ms. Aldridge's cultured accent as opposed to the actress who was dubbing her in other scenes.

The switch-over from replaced/new/re-created to original audio takes place at exactly 9:57.
Kay Aldridge grew up in Virginia, that was the origin of her accent, and Allyson Malandra does also use one in her voice-over. ("Fatha!")

I had the unique experience of being with Kay Aldridge at a Western film festival years ago when they ran this episode. At that time, the entire serial was not available only a few chapters. Ms. Aldridge came into the viewing room as they were running this chapter and she saw herself from years before, on a runaway stagecoach. She drew laughs and applause when she said "Help, Help."

Daredevils of the West was not available to collectors for many years. Republic historian Jack Mathis had a work print but parts of the sound track were missing. Republic serial entusiats can tell the difference between Kay Aldridge's cultured Virginia accent and the twangy actress who dubbed her in the first few minutes of the first chapter. When I was unable to get publicity material for the serial to use in an article from Mathis, I wrote to the Library of Congress and they supplied me with not only photocopies of the original pressbook but also a critique done by one of the Library's researchers on the film. He apparently didn't like western serials as evidenced by h is snooty comments.

Good grief....how about that fist fight with Tom London in chapter one! Great. And so is Mort Glickman's music score.

Is it okay if I copy this video? According to the copyright statute, I am allowed to do so if I ask permission and receive no answer or an approval via the same channel of request within 72 hours of asking.

There is no such "statute," I have never heard of anything so ridiculous and no it is not OK to copy the video.

@@HOTTIUSMAXIMUS Sorry but we cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars to restore serials and give everything away free. If you ran a bakery would your business survive if you gave away all the bread free to everyone who came in the store?
If not, explain to me why you think I should post this whole serial free here.

The Serial Squadron I get your point and it’s well taken. The only reason I questioned it was because episode 1 was available here free of charge, and there are numerous other movies (including old time serials) that ARE available free of charge on You Tube. Perhaps they are all in the public domain. ; I don’t know. I apologize if I came off as somewhat cheap. Let us both do what we can to enjoy our love of the old movies. Have a blessed day.

@@HOTTIUSMAXIMUS Most people post things without permission that they did not create and that makes a lot of people think that is OK and if studios don't care about old things I guess it is. But we work months on all our projects and this one is not available elsewhere. Visit serialsquadron.com and see what else we have there that might interest you that you may not have seen before. Nothing is terribly expensive. We try to make everything available we can of lot of lost material but we need a little support to do it. I guess you understand.

The original first reel of sound is no longer in existence. I added music and sound effects to the missing sections and hired actors to dub the missing lines, who attempted to match the original actors as closely as possible.
