  • www.serialsquadron.com This restoration was created by Eric Stedman of the Serial Squadron. The 1938 LONE RANGER was the first appearance of the Ranger and Tonto in the movies and introduced the canyon-ambush and rescue by Tonto origin story as well as what became the standard costume and look of the Lone Ranger character (heavily borrowed from Buck Jones, whose horse was also named Silver). The Lone Ranger befriends other Texas Rangers in this story as well as Tonto, and which one of them he is is not revealed until the final moment of the last chapter. The The Lone Ranger's voice is done by Billy Bletcher and riding and stunts by the great stunt man Yakima Canutt. Tonto, in his first live-action incarnation here, is played by Victor Daniels aka Chief Thunder Cloud.

    Wow, how I remember this. The Lone Ranger has always been my hero, but Clayton Moore will always be my one and only Lone Ranger though, he did a lot for kids and in teaching morals and the proper use and safety of firearms. These serials were shown in theaters and I had the chance to see them. What memories this brings me. Thank you for sharing and hope to see more. There are a lot of gems out there if they haven’t been destroyed by ignorance or time. Preserving a bit of history should always be considered a must save for future generations to learn from….a lot of great actors and actresses started their careers with minor roles and films which contributed to their successes. ❤️👍🥰

    my dad, and grandfather described these to me as I watched Clayton Moore portray the ranger. I'm so thrilled to find these. and the mask is ludicrous😁 it was supposed to be cut from his brother Dan's vest. eye holes cut by the bullets that killed him. this mask is a opera phantom type. cool mask.

    • @serialsquadron
      @serialsquadron  3 года назад +1

      There was no such thing as that brother's vest business in existence when this serial was made. That was made up in the 1950s, long afterward. This was the ORIGINAL origin of the Lone Ranger which was later changed by Trendle for the TV show into Butch Cavendish attacking the Rangers. It created the whole scenario of the ambush and Tonto rescuing the single ranger left alive and nurshing him back to health in the cave, as well as established the basic costumes for the leads, and even the music and opening credits that were used in the TV series. Give credit where credit is due!
      Also, this mask is not "ludicrous," it is thoroughly practically and actually hides the Ranger's face so people who see him or interact with him do not know who he is. Clayton Moore's tiny little mask hides nothing and anyone would know who he was behind it if they were anywhere near him.

    Born in 1943, I grew up listening to Brace Beemer as the Lone Ranger and John Todd as Tonto on radio. Clayton Moore was the bad guy in Republic westerns and serials before he became TV's Lone Ranger. Not the voice of a young George Montgomery as the LR. Around 1940 there was a Green Hornet serial I saw on TCM. The Hornet was a relative of the Ranger. Gordon Jones portrayed the Hornet, but the voice of Al Hodge, who portrayed the Hornet on radio, was used when Jones donned the mask.

    Already got this one. This was so much better.
    I've got an old VHS version -- the one that still had the subtitles -- and there were two episodes where they had to redub EVERYTHING in English (as I recall, the original dialogue was completely removed in favor of a French dub). Unfortunately, the new dubbers clearly weren't paying attention. At one point, "Jeffries" is shown screaming something to the effect of "GET THAT MASKED MAN RIGHT NOW!!", but the dubbing, in the dullest monotone ever, is saying, "you better go get that masked man right now, get going now." benstein has nothing on whoever dubbed THAT....

      @Clark Hull In the series which ran from 1949-57 you would often hear the term 'redskin' being used. Seen as highly offensive today any tv repeats would have to have a warning before being shown today just like they do for the 'Hawkeye' tv series of 1956-57 on UK tv.

    The creators had no money. They had the story of John Reid, ex Ranger who survived a massacre, donned a mask, and became a champion of justice. That kind of man needed a rousing theme song, but there was no money. The was, however, public domain, from which the William Tell Overture was secured for free. So today most people go HUH? when the overture is mentioned, but tell them it's the theme from the Lone Ranger and it's "Why didn't you say so?"

    I love this show but I never did like "Tonto" as a name, for anyone. Wikipedia explains: "In Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, "tonto" translates as "a dumb person", "moron", or "fool". In the Italian version the original name is retained, but in the Spanish dubbed version, the character is called "Toro" (Spanish for "bull") or "Ponto". Show creator Trendle grew up in Michigan, and knew members of the local Potawatomi tribe, who told him it meant "wild one" in their language. When he created the Lone Ranger, he gave the moniker to the Ranger's sidekick, apparently unaware of the name's negative connotations. " en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonto

      The original Lone Ranger serial prints were ordered destroyed by George Trendle in the 1950s and burned on the Republic Pictures lot. The serial is not known to exist in complete form, or even in English. An incomplete Spanish-subtitled print was discovered some years ago without any titles or credits, and other bits and pieces of it turned up here and there, but, yes, this is a reconstruction of the existing picture, with all English audio synched up shot by shot to remaining existing sources, and none of the material I worked with looked anything like what you see here. Sections with missing audio have been redubbed according to the original script, signs and letters re-created in English, and all opening credits and recaps re-created. What you are seeing is a shot-by-shot reconstruction that is an approximation of a serial that appears not to exist at all in the form you're looking at and took months of work to put together.

      Frank Slabinak You have to understand; before this restoration by The Serial Squadron, there was virtually nothing else. Restoration is a relative thing. It depends on what raw material there is to work with in the first place.
      In this case, as with all TSS releases, what we now have is something that is done with love, care, blood, sweat and tears. Without these editions, we'd either have nothing or complete garbage, usually released by budget DVD companies only in it to milk dollars out of us. Or bootlegs.

    AT THE START THEY NAME ALL THE ACTORS AND ACTRESS, BUT NOT THE LONE RANGER. ANYWAY, THAT'S NOT THE REAL LONE RANGER. THE REAL LONE RANGER IS CLAYTON MOORE AND THE REAL TONTO IS JAY SILVERHEELS.

    • @serialsquadron
      @serialsquadron  4 года назад

      There is no "real" Lone Ranger, he is a fictional character, and the TV show never would have existed had this serial not been made and created the origin story and provided the basic costumes that Moore and Silverheels wore. The opening credits were reshot in a very similar manner for the TV show as well.

      @@serialsquadron, Everything on tv is fake I know that we have cnn and mslsd as an example. But what I meant is, the best lone ranger is Clayton Moore and the best tonto is Jay Silverheels.

      @@auletjohnast03638 You're entitled to your opinion but a lot of others played the part as well. In this version the character is actually played by 3 people -- Lee Powell who played the Ranger unmasked, Billy Bletcher who did the voice of the Masked Man and Yakima Canutt who performed the riding and stunts.

      Because this is a sample chapter of a restoration which took months to perform and many thousand dollars to create and I have no interest in people copying it and reposting it without proper credit here or on other online video services, Facebook, or anywhere else, or selling copies of it on $5 DVDs on auction sites either. That's why.
      You get to see it free here, with the watermark.
      If you want to see the complete restored serial without subtitles or watermarks, you can do so on Amazon

    "Tonto" means silly or fool in Spanish, why this name?
    Nevertheless translators working on this TV show gave this indigenous man the name or nickname "toro" which sounds more adequate for this character,
