@@LarryVarner-zq5zdHer father fought the most diabolical thing that existed at the time. He helped make the world a better place. @sarajanesmith3892 Thank you, Sara. I tell people the same thing. It was an honor to serve our great Nation and beloved Marine Corps and I would do it again. Semper Fi
My Dad was US Navy E3 during the Korean War and I was handed his flag when I was 16. I have witnessed several in my family being handed flags. To be handed the flag of a loved one brings forth a mix of emotions, pride, despair, sorrow to name but three. Years ago it was my aunt's turn to get my cousin's flag. Normally the military will supply poll bearers if requested. My aunt made such a request as his friends were too broken up to do a proper job of it. So eight men all in the uniforms of enlisted men performed that duty. I have seen this done several times prior to that including the above with my Dad and I always took note of the precision and solemnity of that sacred duty. But with my cousin it seemed a little off like the eight men had never done this before. They also looked a bit old to be privates and corporals with only one sergeant who also seemed like the only one who knew what he was doing and seemed like he was the youngest. Later my aunt told me that the eight poll bearers had been officers who requested the duty and since only enlisted could perform that duty they all donned the uniforms of enlisted men. Seems all eight had at one time or other had their lives saved by my cousin. That is all we were told. To this day my aunt has no idea of the circumstances of my cousin's death or his relationship with those eight men. He got a purple heart and a bronze star. All eight told my aunt his actions were consistent with the actions of a person deserving the medal of honor. But all told my aunt that they cannot divulge anything else as it's classified. That was about 30 years ago. I still wonder what he did that 8 officers would do that. At least they folded the flag correctly.
I am SO EXTREMELY THANKFUL to all those who have served, are serving, and will be serving in our military!! Without ALL OF YOU, we wouldn't have our freedoms!! God bless ALL of you, and God Bless America!! 🇺🇸 🙏
My mother-in-law kept her husband’s flag encased in glass on her dresser. It was a truly moving graveside ceremony and I’ll always remember the sombre moment. RIP Opa❤
I did this multiple times. Sometimes it was somber but easy....servicemember was a WW2 vet...lived a full life and we needed to respect him in passing. It was a good thing. Sometimes it was to parent...and once to a young daughter. That was not easy. I loved doing it and hated it. Honor. Duty. Respect.

Thank you for your service..My father was in North Korea and in Germany..he iwas in the Army. Never talked about it..except said it was cold..Bless all our armed forces.
I was a guide at Arlington National Cemetery for three years. I was sometimes stunned by the lack of respect given to the men and women laid to rest at Arlington...It was once the property of General Robert E Lee's in-laws. He is not buried there. But many who fought and died during the US Civil War are...from both sides. You can tell the difference due to weather the marker has a rounded top *Union* or a pointed top *Confederate* the reason for the pointed top was the Confederates didn't want Union Soldiers sitting on their graves. For any movie fans reading this Lee Marvin is buried below the site of the Unknown Soldiers.
My father, Colonel Dale James metzinger received the same honor at Arlington in 1994 after 29 years of military service With United States, Air Force, including 35 combat missions flown with the eighth Air Force, a tour in Brussels with NATO and two tours at the Pentagon with the joint chiefs

I don't know if I could be the soldier who hands the flag to the family member. I'd be shaking in tears before I even started to bend the knee.
I had to do that for a widow who's family were friends. It is very humbling .
